With a bright and welcoming ambience reminiscent of a European bistro, Montmartre serves elegant French fare in a casual and inviting setting. Starter options include the rustic pate with toasted baguette and pickled vegetables and the chilled asparagus with lemon oil and almond hummus. House specialties include the eggy custard quiche Lorraine with bacon and caramelized onions, the mussels marinieres sautéed in garlic, shallots and white wine and the savory Normande buckwheat crepe with smoked salmon and crème fraiche. The ideal way to round out your meal at Montmarte is to try one of its desserts, such as the flourless chocolate tart with white chocolate and raspberry sauces enjoyed with a hot cup of fresh brewed French roast coffee.
On days with lovely weather, try to get a seat on Montmartre's outdoor patio to enjoy your meal in the warm sunshine and refreshing breeze.
My friend and I had a lovely lunch at Montmarte. Although it can be noisy inside, the patio was an appealing place to eat and to talk. The service and the food were both excellent. We shared an endive salad and a calves liver entree (most people shudder at the thought, but we both love it, and this is a beautiful, silky rendition). The dishes arrived divided and plated, making them easy to share and adding a touch of graciousness. We both left feeling well-fed and well-pleased.
My hangar steak was mediocre, the accompanying kale was chewy but the cucumber gazpacho was absolutely delicious
Outstanding food. Highly recommend seafood stew. Great French Burgundy wine. Attentive service.
Service excellent! Mussels appetizer outstanding! Loved the outdoor seating!
GREAT PLACE, GREAT FOOD, NICE OUTDOOR PATIO. WE'VE LIVED IN DC FOR YEARS, ONE OF THE BEST, MOST FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS (OR ACTUALLY THE BEST) IN DC AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.
Best neighborhood restaurant. Consistently excellent with a relaxed ambiance.
Love this restaurant on Capital Hill. Services is very friendly. Food is always delicious. Had a date tart for dessert and it was super delicious!!
I have dined at Montmartre in the past. I live on Capitol Hill, so for me it is a "neighborhood" place. Also, I lived for 25 years in Paris, so my standards are high. Because of my connections to France, I do not normally go to "French" restaurants elsewhere. But I have made an exception for this one. I was also accompanied by an American friend from Paris. We both thought the experience rated highly. The staff was courteous and helpful and French-speaking, so we could converse with them in French, and they could explain things to us clearly The food was excellent and the service helpful and efficicient. We were scheduled to see a play after dinner, and we had plenty of time to enjoy our meal and make our curtain on foot. The wine list was excellent. I ordered a red Sancerre, which is not an easy wine to find here. But, Montmartre is pricey, very pricey, in fact. There is good value for the money, but it's expensive.
As always, the food was fresh and excellently prepared. They also easily accommodated my choices to account for my lactose intolerance. Montmartre is always our favorite.
Gutes Essen, Bedienung etwas arrogant
Charming restaurant in the exciting Eastern Market neighborhood. Best steak tartare I’ve ever had. Ordered the cod as my main dish which was also delicious. We were there for a late lunch and the place was pretty quiet but the service was good.
This is our 6th time here, as we always make it a point to eat here whenever we vacation in Washington DC, and this restaurant never fails to disappoint. The food is amazing. We had the escargo and octopus appetizers and they were so many layers of flavor. We had the Rabbit and Angus NY strip entrees and they were just delicious. We finished it off with the floating island desert and the Creme anglaise was to die for. Honestly everything on the menu is underpriced as you get amazing food for the money making it a great value!
Consistently excellent. I particularly enjoy the fish dishes, which never disappoint!
I loved my meal of mussels and salad, but my husband had the cassoulet and while the duck part was good, the beans looked like a can of pork and beans. It was a disappointment.
We realized that only one waiter was serving the whole restaurant, inside and out. But, we had to keep waiting to catch his attention.
I discovered this restaurant on Open Table when looking for a place to have lunch somewhat near the National Gallery of Art. It was a beautiful day and we dined outside at a table with an umbrella. I ordered the turkey sandwich on grilled sourdough bread with Brie cheese and arugula and it was probably one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. I will definitely return if I’m back in the area.
Very consistent the food and service is always great. My favorite Eastern Market restaurant.
It was a pleasant evening so we were able to sit outside which added to our positive experience. Multiple servers checked in on us so we felt well taken care of. Food was very good and nicely presented. Good value at $40 for entree and glass of wine.
montmartre was the best culinary discovery during my visit to washington!
Good casual french restaurant. Food is consistent and good - not over the top fancy. Wine list is not overpriced with some really nice options. Always enjoy Montmartre for a relaxed meal with friends or business colleagues.
Really delicious and authentic food. Tuesday was 1/2 price bottle of wine day so we dined well & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A little Capitol Hill gem.
We live nearby and have been going to Montmartre for many years. Always an excellent meal.
As always, I had a great meal.
Montmartre is my favorite restaurant. The French bistro cooking is consistently terrific; the staff is knowledgeable and friendly; the prices are reasonable; and, it sits in the heart of Capitol Hill. Also, bottles of wine are half price Sunday and Tuesday! My favorite dishes: mussels, cassoulet, calves liver; my wife always orders fresh fish.
Montmartre remains our very favorite local restaurant. As always, the food was excellent, the service first-rate and the staff attended fully to our special requests. We love Montmartre.
I recently reconnected with a friend that I knew as a teenager. Forty+ years later, he's coming to DC. I didn't hesitate for a second and made reservations for lunch at Montmartre. Naturally, I was a bit nervous, but was fully confident that our meal would be delicious, which helped smooth the nerves. We had a great time (thanks Montmartre!!). My strategy is to order from the Daily Specials menu. :)
As always great food and great quality, but please dial back on the “your in a french restaurant and don’t bloody forget it” stuff.
I speak fluent french myself but this is DC...the snobby correcting of my guests because they got one accent wrong on the menu is really just so absurd!
I met an out of town relative recently for an early dinner and dined outside. The weather was perfect and she had no problem finding Montmartre from the Eastern Market Metro Station.
We had a wonderful evening made even more memorable by our attentive and helpful waiter and the entire waitstaff, the delicious food and the ambiance. I have already told some friends about my experience, and will continue to do so.
Great service and the rabbit dish was fabulous!!
Anniversary dinner at a favorite place. Our praise of Montmartre could go in and on. Our only negative comment is the size of the tables, which is unfair, but the table for two, with bread, drinks, bottle of water, and an appetizer is so small such that place settings tumble to the floor, and drinks nearly so, only to be immediately replaced by an attentive busboy. Part of the dining experience is like a chess game but to make every piece fit on the board. These are petty niggles in light of the food. Fresh, well presented, and appropriately portioned to price point. The meringue clouds on a sea of creme anglaise, just do it, you won’t be disappointed. We’ll be back and happily so.
We always love Montmartre. For some reason during our last visit we had to wait nearly an hour for our food and my husband’s request for medium rare duck ended up being a tad grey in the center. He was so hungry he didn’t return it and loved every bit of it. I had the rabbit and truffle linguine - a must have before you leave this earth. Seriously.
The outside heater wasn’t working but the waiter got it fixed in no time. The unusual delay in food service was not typical so we will always count Montmartre as one of our better restaurants for good French cuisine.
OMG, the lunch salads are just divine. Everything here is always good, but the current menu? Yum, just go, already.
Date night with my husband. Attentive service and excellent food! Had Bistro salad, Dijion mussels, rabbit leg and the special - pork tenderloins.
One of our favorite restaurants! Wonderful neighborhood, and the gem is always special. Mussels cannot be beat. The cod was amazing. Loved the meringue dessert - all of us had a great meal, and the service is always attentive yet not intrusive. Cozy, pretty place. Love it.
Montmartre has long been my favorite restaurant in DC. It's not an extensive menu by any means, but everything I've had there has been delicious. It's quiet and the service is unobtrusive. The wine list has a lot of good wines at very fair prices. My only complaint from this recent visit: the chocolate mousse was under par, rather dried out or overcooked.
The food and service are always excellent. Our table ready on time. Noise level was a bit higher than during past visits
Bet meat I have had in a couple years...…..THE OCTERPUS......WOW Awesome
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no non ononononon
We were celebrating a 40th birthday, a 45th wedding anniversary, and the imminent conferment of a doctoral degree. The starters—two different types of mussels and an onion soup—were devoured, and the main dishes—gnocchi, hanger steak, a beef special, liver, and scallops—were equally delicious. The birthday dessert (chocolate mousse) and the complimentary anniversary dessert (crème brûlée) came out on beautifully decorated plates. The service was attentive without being cloying. All in all, an evening to remember.
It's always a pleasure to come to the restaurant lovely staff. Excellent service.
