It resembles old Roman “Fraschette” offering a wide selection of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, cold dishes from Roman tradition and a modern take on Pinsa, a low fat, low calorie and easy to digest flat bread made with a blend of rice, soy and wheat flour imported directly from Rome, all GMO free.
Our wine list represents mostly old world regions. We carry wines that are made from grape varietals native to their respective areas. We feature smaller producers of less known wines with a focus on organic, biodynamic and natural agriculture.
Food was very good and somewhat different. Not exactly a dress up place or pretending to be. Have to plow through many homeless folks gathering for the evening. Need more comfortable chairs if you are going to sit for more than an hour.
Excellent salumi and cheese selection. Enjoyed it very much and would definitely go back. Definitely one of the best options available in the area. As has been previously mentioned in many other reviews, its biggest drawback is the dicey location, but that’s true of this area in general.
We brought a big group of 12 for a team dinner and everyone loved it from start to finish. :)
Just picked "any old place" near hotel and boy were we pleasantly surprised. Just wanted a snack and had the most awesome pizza with sausage and a great dessert. When in SF will for sure go back. Great find---hidden gem
Great spot of your in the neighborhood. Wouldn’t seek it out. But a nice spot for a glass of wine and a spot of cheese.
The pizza is exceptionally good. I love that you can find a great restaurant in this otherwise questionable location. My biggest complaint is the extreme noise level. I wish they would do something about that.
Great food. Great service. But very popular and very loud. But that just contributes to the busy animated vibe the place has.
Love to come there before I go to SF Jazz which is 10 to 15 minutes walking at most.
I think they mixed our receipt with the couple next to us so ended up paying $70 for one pizza and 2 glasses of wine. It was loud and the pizza was burnt. The service was very quick though.
I just love this restaurant and I’m only sorry you don’t have a duplicate in the East Bay.
Consistently great. Great local feel and attitude (which is a plus)
Love this place, but they only have one public restroom and when I used it shortly after they opened for the evening the lid was off of the tank; kinda gross!
Very authentic, excellent service, friendly staff but... the toppings of the pinsas were very scarce. Both my wife and I had several bites when we found ourselves chewing on the bread part only, no toppings whatsoever. For the price, we believe the cook could be more generous with the cheese, tomatoes, pesto or whichever pinsa you choose.
Loved this hidden gem of a restaurant. Yummy food, lovely atmosphere. Great spot to dine before going to GG Theater. Only complaint is that the hard metal chairs are not very comfortable to sit in.
Although expensive for a pizza, the flavors here are amazing. If it were more geographically convenient we would be regulars.
Montesacro has a lively and fun atmosphere. The food was very high quality and the rustic style - pinsas - made us feel like we were gathered at a Roman piazza.
Roberto is the best waiter on the planet!
Great place for dinner before a show at the nearby Golden Gate Theater.
I enjoy Montesacro more for lunch. The noise level at dinner makes conversation difficult and the chairs are very uncomfortable. That being said, the food is excellent...just be prepared for metal finishes with sounds reverberating throughout the restaurant to provide “atmosphere.” I consider this an unhealthy way to dine. The wooden bench “settee” seating is slightly more comfortable...
Exceptional service. Our party was late due to crazy Friday night traffic. Everyone from the front desk to our server were patient and understanding, making what was stressful, less so. Food and drinks were delicious. Despite being late for our reservation they worked to get us out in time to make our theater start. Will come back!
I was there with 7 friends for a pre show dinner. The pinsas were Delicious and unique, and the mixed charcuterie board was also yummy. The spicy chocolate mousse and coffee was very satisfying and tasty,The service was great . However the noise level was extremely high and almost unbearable, thus making conversations impossible . Because we spent more energy talking loudly to overcome the noise , it was hard to enjoy our food in a relaxed setting. BTW, the metal chairs were very uncomfortable. I’m giving it 4 stars because the food was excellent,
Interesting Italian restaurant that features Roman pinsa (pizza) with funky decor. Great for before or after Golden Gate Theater.
Ambiance brings one back to an authentic restaurant in Italy. Food was excellent. Glad they used "organic" and alternate ingredients. There was a "home-baked" feel. By the time we left, Montescaro was overflowing with guests.
This place makes the best pizza (pinsa) in the Bay Area. The price is reasonable for the quality of the food. As an Italian I enjoyed this pizza a lot and will go back more frequently. This place gives you an idea of what the real flavors of Italy are when it comes to pizza and I have to admit that this place does a pretty good job. I highly recommended it.
Montesacro is a delicious restaurant with a funky vibe. It is close to the theater so if very convenient for a night out in San Francisco.
Our go to place when we go to the Golden Gate! Food never disappoints!
We love this place! We go here for lunch before the theater as it's within walking distance. This is not a "pizza place," it's a Pinsaria, which means it's healthier and more flavorful than pizza. Everything is fresh, affordable, and the service is great. I highly recommend!
We had reservations..25 minutes late seating us, others were offered drink service ...we were not . There were 3 parties waiting with us to be seated. Poor management of the floor and reservations.
Menu very challanging to understand...way to eclectic on the pizzas. I am a foodie, live in Sonoma county, own a winery, and travel the world do I am not naive to ingredients. This place seems to want to impress for all the wrong reasons. It was not comfortable and did not feel good. My pizza ( call it want you want..its a pizza) was terrible and tasteless. Waaaay to trendy with no attention to serving their customer ( not literally serving but simply a good experience).
I guess when you are this busy the business and the money is coming in so the attitude is that they do ot have to care for their patrons
We went to celebrate my birthday. We had tickets to Hamilton and the restaurant was near by. I would recommend this cute, tasty place to anyone! Be seen with Monte- he makes the experience all the better! The espresso was amazing. Presented really pretty and cute!
Limited menu but everything done well
I went to here with some friends before seeing a show at the Orpheum. It was the perfect start to a super fun night. This place is small but very cute. I would definitely recommend making a reservation if you know you’re going to eat here because it filled up fast not long after we arrived. The food was delicious and the service was super friendly and helpful! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a cool spot to eat in the city.
Told 2 servers that the only toilet in the restaurant would NOT flush! Our server said that they are very busy during the lunch rush and would get to it when someone was available. An hour and a half passed and it still was not fixed. This is an unacceptable issue no matter how busy the restaurant is!!
We loved the pinsa and the drink selection. The service was distracted and inattentive, though. I'm going to assume it was a fluke - we'll be back to try more of the pinsas and cheeses.
This was our second visit and the food was just as delicious as before. The service is professional and friendly. We brought out-of-town guests on both occasions and they loved this restaurant. We hope to become regulars here!
small selection of carefully curated food that shows mastery
Fun restaurant. Great service and Food selection. Think outside the box...bring a group of friends and try everything!
We had an excellent time and the food was delicious! Our server was very sweet and everyone was nice to our kids. They even had the same snap on high chair that we have at home so my very little one was comfortable. It was refreshing to be warmly welcomed with my kiddos at a nice restaurant. Thank you!
Fun Italian food. Caprese salad made exceptional by the high quality mozzarella. Their version of pizza, called pinsa, was delicious . Waiter fun and explained everything. Price reasonable for the city.
Reasonably varied menu, every item we tasted was savory and well-prepared, esp. sardine antipasto and divine smoked wild salmon piseta. Way too limited and overpriced selection of wines by the glass, underwhelming “Happy Hour” offerings.
IMO, the flea market decor here seemed more rundown than rustic, though hats off to the considerable effort it must have taken to arrange the overabundance of ... stuff.
