It resembles old Roman “Fraschette” offering a wide selection of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, cold dishes from Roman tradition and a modern take on Pinsa, a low fat, low calorie and easy to digest flat bread made with a blend of rice, soy and wheat flour imported directly from Rome, all GMO free.
Our wine list represents mostly old world regions. We carry wines that are made from grape varietals native to their respective areas. We feature smaller producers of less known wines with a focus on organic, biodynamic and natural agriculture.
Hands down my favorite "hidden gem" in all of SF. Been coming here for the past 6 years or so and as a person who has both worked, owned, and invested in restaurants this one is awesome.
I am a huge fan of the charcuterie options with many cheese and meat options that you don't find every day. Pinsa's are incredible and rival some of my favorite NY and BOS pizza spots. They are delicious and I highly recommend the pepper, guanciale, and egg one.
The atmosphere has a rustic NYC or Boston North End feel which I love. Its not too quiet but perfect for conversation whether its business or a date night out. The wine list is great with a wide selection of both Italian and US wines all reasonably priced. The staff while attentive are not over bearing and are quite friendly.
The only thing to be aware of is that the location it is in can be a bit shocking for those that aren't familiar with some of SF's homeless issues. It's in a less than desirable area so I would not recommend walking there after dark and instead use uber or a taxi to go to and from the spot.
The location is perfect if you are going to the theater.
The owner was attentive and delightful. We had several dishes, and shared family style. Everyone was delighted with the food.
This is our regular spot now for dinner before shows. With a curtain time you can't book a 20 course meal, but still we appreciate a great experience. Been here now a few times, I think we'll stick with it.
Except for the city jackhammer noisily drowning out our indoor conversation, it was great. Would like to see less dust in display items. Food and service were great.
Great find. Food was great, staff had great recommendaions on the menu and everything we ordered was fantastic. Will definitely come her again. Perfect location for going to a show at the Orpheum.
Good food, location and service, fun ambiance, the 5 of us had a nice evening.
Great meal before a BroadwaySF show! You don’t want to miss out on the neighborhood gem.
Our waiter was the ‘busser’. He could not have given us better service! I think I will ask for him the next time, instead of the regular guy in the hat.
We enjoy going to Montesacro for an early dinner before theater. Pizzas are outstanding, service is prompt and friendly and the whole restaurant has a nice vibe about it. Shame on San Francisco government for allowing the neighborhood to go from bad to worse.
Went there on March 5th. The trout Pinsa was the best thing we’ve tasted at Montesacro. We’ve been there several times but this time, the dough was light and crunchy and help enhance the texture of the trout.
Amazing food! Amazing staff! Great little hidden gem :)
We walked there and it was easy to find, but at 5pm, many homeless tents were already set up for the night so we had to walk through ALOT mentally challenged and drug addicted humans. It was a little sketchy. But it was worth it. Relaxed atmosphere, seated right away (we arrived earlier than our reservation) We enjoyed some of the salami selections and tried the pinsas. The margarita pinsa with prosciutto was amazing, while on the casal bertone pinsa, you couldn't taste the honey and the guanciale was a little burned. When asking about what to order the server told us absolutely no changes or substitutions. I personally don't eat cheese, and they wouldn't allow me to order a pinsa without cheese, so that left me to order a salad. (which was tasty). Would we try again, probably.
Vegan options, while few in number, were excellent.
Service was fast and friendly; we tried 5 different pizzas and one was outstanding, 3 were ok, one definitely missed in flavor. The dough is good. Wine selection OK. Neighborhood is not the best. Montesacro is still the best dining option around the ACT Strand theater so I’ll be back.
Love this restaurant! We come here often. The atmosphere feels like we are in Italy. The Pinsa’s are fantastic. Get more than one and try as many as you can.
Always delicious. Convenient location to walk to the theater. Reservations are a must if you have time limits.
A definite “find” near the theaters. The area is rather sketchy but once inside this cute little restaurant, all is good. The pizzas were light and flavorful and there is a great selection of wine. Would definitely go again!!
A bit pricey but worth the occasional splurge because the Pinsa is so good.
Delicious panini, but bread could be a little thinner and chewier.
This was our first visit. We enjoyed our two pizzas and especially the salad with endive and blood oranges. So glad we had the ice cream and sorbet trio. It was delicious. The cost was quite high for a simple lunch that did not include a glass of wine. $. It would difficult to find if you didn’t have google maps.
I LOVE THIS PLACE! It is a true hidden gem. The food is always top notch. It's flavorful, creative and delicious. The pinsa is fantastic, and all of the sides are fresh and perfectly prepared. Great things about it include (1) the fact that it's open relatively late, so it's a great spot to visit after seeing a show at the Orpheum or ACT or any one of the nearby venues, (2) that the staff are all Italian or Italian-adjacent (or just super-hip) and emanate Eureopean-ness, while also providing excellent service, (3) they have an extensive and well-curated wine list, (4) the prices are totally reasonable, (5) I can almost always get a reservation. I went twice last week, both times getting the tuna pinsa (Garbatella), which is crazy-good. I also had zucchini, bell peppers and olives rolled around in olive oil, and some great cheeses. Their dolci are also amazing - we actually ordered FOUR for the four of us: the olive oil cookies, chocolate mousse and pistachio pinsa, and gelatto, and we loved them all. Highly recommend. I LOVE THIS PLACE!
This was a great food discovery for us. The pinsa crust and toppings are absolutely delicious. We will be back often!
What a disappointment! After reading all of the outstanding reviews, we were really excited and our expectations were destroyed. The staff was rude, unaccommodating from the receptionist to the waiter to the kitchen to the end. Ugh! Not one smile or happy vibe. I would never recommend this place. The salad was blah. The first pizza came out burnt and 20 minutes before the others so the guests were done with the first pizza before the others arrived. They squeeze you in like sardines and then forget about you. What a scam!!!!! Never ever
Super disappointed ITALIAN expert
Invited two friends who had not been there before and were pleasantly surprised to find an excellent restaurant after walking through trashy Streets of San Francisco.
A very fun place, with great food. My go to place when I am in the mid-Market area, particularly before a show!
I love this place! I have been here about five times, and it meets my expectations each time. The food is excellent, and I like it better because the atmosphere is casual. It isn’t pretentious, just delivers quality food in a friendly atmosphere.
Monty was incredibly accommodating and had great suggestions.
What a charming find! It's in random location, but I highly recommend it. The food was amazing, fresh and authentic. The service was outstanding and ambiance made me feel like we were in Europe.
Delicious, light pinsa and incredibly warm and attentive staff.
Excellent, kind, knowledgeable service. Great wines. Delicious food. Packed house. Just altogether fun and successful evening. You simply can’t make a mistake ordering from this menu. The four of us had beer and 2 bottles of an Italian red wine. We ordered the appetizers: burrata then the meat and cheese platter; and 2 pinsas: the Corviale and great San Lorenzo. And dessert! It was a perfect amount. Nothing was left over. We were completely happy.
If I were to find any problem, it would be that the noise level a bit high for me. But we came at 7:00; when I came before, before the theater (5:30ish) there wasn’t an issue. What a find!
Service and ambiance made our experience excellent! I would go back in a heartbeat. We had lunch before a show at the Orphean.
Great for quick bite before theater.
Our waiter (I wish I could remember his name, he had an Italian accent and earrings) was absolutely incredible. Our reservation was made for 8 people but we had 7 and he was happy to accommodate moving tables so we could feel more intimate. He explained everything beautifully and gave us honest recommendation for our size and dietary restrictions. He made my brother's birthday dinner a wonderful experience!
Really good and unique food. Great for before the theater, as it only about 2 blocks from the Orpheum.
Wonderful little trattoria style place with great food.
The only downside is the neighborhood where it is located - a little sketchy.
Pinsa is incredible - crust is airy and light but with a delicious crisp. Tuna and capers pinsa exceeded expectations. Warm service and special ambiance. Highly recommended.
It was like walking into my Italian family’s home. The server recommended his favorites as well as the most popular items. The food was outstanding and we never felt rushed. It was a great experience all around. We will definitely be going back!
Great restaurant but in a sketchy area!
