It resembles old Roman “Fraschette” offering a wide selection of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, cold dishes from Roman tradition and a modern take on Pinsa, a low fat, low calorie and easy to digest flat bread made with a blend of rice, soy and wheat flour imported directly from Rome, all GMO free.
Our wine list represents mostly old world regions. We carry wines that are made from grape varietals native to their respective areas. We feature smaller producers of less known wines with a focus on organic, biodynamic and natural agriculture.

The atmosphere is perfect for an evening out with friends over a meal. It’s also near the Golden Gate Theater. If you are headed to BroadwaySF, book a table to eat here before or after the show.
We ate here when they first opened and liked it, this time we loved it! The space seems bigger and brighter, the seating more comfortable-maybe because the floors are level now-and it was much more welcoming feeling. We had wines by the glass and both waiters who helped us were very knowledgeable. We shared the olives and each had a Pinsa and they were delicious! Crispy bottome, perfect toppings and plenty for dinner! We’ll be back!
Service left a ‘bad taste’. Same waiter as we had previously (Italian guy w/ beard) but he gave us our check without offering to see if we wanted dessert (which we did). I think he just wanted to turn our table one more time before the Donna Summer show started (90 minutes from then). We’ll be back but if I get that same rush job, you’ll never see us again. We have season tickets now so we are looking for a good, affordable eatery to have lunch at before the Wednesday shows at the Golden Gate Theater.
Loved it. Authentic Italian pizza,. Simple menu with a good selection. Fun atmosphere, with great wines.
Montesacro is one of the few real Italian dining establishments in the Bay Area. The ingredients and the servers are all authentic and we always enjoy dining here. I don't know of another place that is a pinseria and uses this special grain that they import from Rome. The Italian wine selection isn't huge, but many great choices if you are familiar with Italian wines, or the servers are happy to make a suggestion. It's also one of the few places you can go to get a good meal at 4:00 p.m. if you need to eat before going to the theater. It's a gem tucked in an unlikely place that you would never discover on your own.
Sat us right at the door with the cold and crowds coming in. Not my fav, and they're super busy so you feel rushed all the time. Not sure i'd go back, and it's the WORST WORST neighborhood to be in after dark. Ladies be careful. That said, the food is pretty ok.
Conveniently located across Market Street from the Golden Gate Theater - great find for before or after the show! It is tucked a bit away off of Stevenson Street (look hard) but worth it. The Pinsa flatbread is heavenly! Service was friendly and made you feel welcome.
In a word:OUTSTANDING! We had never consumed a pinsa-type of pizza before and we were totally impressed as to how delicious it was. The service was outstanding, too, as the server bent over backwards to help my wife find a wine that met her expectations. We're already looking forward to our next visit!
Montesacro is in a very unprepossessing location in an alley south of a still emerging section of Market Street between Union Square and the Civic Center. It's not a place you'd just stumble across. My wife and I have been there 3 times, each time for lunch before the theater, and each time the place has been super busy. However, the staff is charming and works hard to be helpful and responsive. The decor is on the funky side, but it's the most Italian cafe-like place I've seen in the United States and I'd strongly recommend it.
LOVED this restaurant. Yummy and so close to the theater!
Nice neighborhood place for a friendly simple dinner
I come here always before a show at BroadwaySF. Always a quick, easy and yummy eat!
A wonderful, authentic Italian restaurant ran by Italians, for Italians (or anyone else fortunate enough to find the place)...
The food is outstanding, but a little on the pricy side, which makes it more of a "special night out" destination. The service here is excellent. It's a delightful experience all around.
Montesacro is a hidden gem. The food and the service are impeccable. I do wish the menu included a pinsa with chicken on top, and a somewhat larger dessert menu. Bu these are minor points. Highly recommended! thank you to everyone at Montesacro. I look forward to returning. Cheers.
Always excellent. All the pinsas are great, but if you like tuna, treat yourself to the Garbatella -- it's just phenomenal. The starters are also tasty, especially the Cavolfiori (roasted cauliflower, black olives, capers, cherry tomato, [not-too] hot chili, breadcrumbs). And the wine, wine by-the-glass, cheese, and charcuterie selections are outstanding. Maybe my favorite restaurant in the area right now.
Small dining area with cozy seating. Make a reservation so you’re not waiting to snag a table.
Loved it. perfect place for before theater. Enjoyed the starters and the wine list was great
Quintessential SF eating experience! Food very good, and unique, but not like "killer".
Wonderful find. Authentic Italian feel, great food and warm and inviting staff, service and ambiance.
Highly recommend for the experience.
Great food, great service, and wonderful staff. The location was perfect for going to the Orpheum theatre after.
My mom was visiting for the holiday and we came for dinner before seeing a play. It was amazing! Our family is Italian and both the food and ambiance felt so authentic. Everyone was attentive and friendly and both the wine and food were delicious!!! We will be back again and again!!!
Our favorite. It never disappoints. Blood orange salad was amazing. Pisne were mouthwatering good.
The folks at Montesacro did a wonderful job seating and accommodating our large group! We had pre-ordered a few items and the food just kept coming, it was delicious and a hit! A must when visiting San Francisco.
We choose this restaurant before Strand theater productions. It's a great value with good food in a very funky but fun setting.
Perfect spot to go to before a show at the Orpheum! Great service, wine and food and a cool atmosphere.
The food was outstanding. The service good. The chairs horribly uncomfortable and my husband and I are thin.
Definitely best restaurant in the area. And one of the most authentic italian restaurants in SF
I loved this hidden gem near the theatre. The food was delicious and authentic the service was impeccable. Only complaint was that the acoustics are not great. It is very loud and it is difficult to have a conversation. I will be back.
It’s located in a less than picturesque alley off of 6th street. But, it’s charming in an old fashioned Italian way. The food was authentic, fresh and a good value. I’ll be back.
This place is outstanding! What a beautiful venue and atmosphere, this could be somewhere in Italy. I‘m from Germany and I‘ve been a lot in our neighbor country. An of course the food is amazing and truly authentic! We had the Tatar and several pinsas that we‘ve shared. My favorite was the bacon with honey glazed onions. Thank you. This was definitely not my last visit.
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Food is excellent and room has great character. Must have a reservation on a Friday night.
Our group enjoyed the rustic tavern ambience of this place. The food was simple but very good. Great find!
Pizza was fabulous! Service was very fun and friendly! Made us smile!
A wonderful find! A warm neighborhood feel; good food though limited protein menu; good range of wine prices and choices, mostly from European wineries. Staff was helpful in making a wine choice and accommodated our need to move our reservation twice because of logistics getting there, and a change in show time at a local theater. And, we weren't rushed!! This is so unusual in U.S. restaurants today.
Loved everything! The food was amazing! Yummy Burrata!
Lovely little spot with interesting menu and good service.
My absolute favorite restaurant in SF. This town's best Italian food is not in North Beach.
If you're going to the Orpheum...this place is close and the pizza is yummy, tho pricey. It's literally down an alley, so the location makes you wonder. The inside was antique-filled and lively, the pizza was very good (really a pizza and salad place) and the wine/beer selections did not disappoint. We had a 5pm reservation for a 7pm show, and that timing worked perfectly for a non-rushed event. Easy walk to the theatre. Will definitely return next time we are in the area.
A very trendy place with pizza like in Rome -- the crust comes from there. We had the burrata first, which was delish. The pizza is like no other in SF. You can't miss.
