Montebello Ristorante Italiano
Always a pleasure! Signore Joe and all the staff make you feel like you've come home. Love each and every course!
Lunch was very disappointing. No real lunch menu, dinner prices, service extremely poor snd only two tables were occupied. At that, they sat us right next to each other when the whole restaurant was empty. The waiters huddled in the back znd we had to flag them down to get their attention.
Very nice food and atmosphere. Family-owned ,had a great experience ,
We were five people and were able to hear each other talk and have a good conversation. Food was generous and attractively served. My veal scallopini was excellent.
Very good food. There were 6 of us and everyone was happy with what they got. Fresh and familiar Italian food. Prices are too high! Ceasar salad for 2 is $35! (Maybe they use lettuce that's not contaminated!) We still decided to try it and it was delicious! If you are are not deterred by the prices, you will enjoy this restaurant.
We live near Portland, ME, which was been rated the top small city for dining in the U.S. So we know food.
I used to work in New York, and this has been a neighborhood favorite for 30 years. I went there the first time shortly after it opened in 1988 and have been going ever since. The food and service have been outstanding every time. It's a neighborhood spot (albeit a Park Avenue neighborhood). It's northern Italian. Food is freshly prepared, some done at the table. The menu has not changed much over the years. Don't go if you want the latest fashion in cuisine. Do go if you want dependably consistent quality and attention to detail.
Prices are what you would expect for the neighborhood, but it's worth the splurge. We go here every time we go to New York.
Really cannot say enough about the staff and service. What an amazing crew there.
Food tasty and professionally served. Fish deboned at the table side. Wine and after dinner drinks affordable and plenty!
Going over 10+ year and it never disappoints. Excellent food and superb service. Wonderful experience.
I am Italian and the consistency of the food is amazing. The tomato sauce is the best. You can have a quiet conversation without background noise and you own the table for the evening. Strongly recommend the eggplant parmigiana and sausage, pepper and onions.
The menu was very engaging. It contains the number of offerings that are not often seen on other menus. The waiters were friendly, knowledgeable and very attentive. The owner presides and is very friendly and conversational.
Food is always good!!
I arrived at 7 p.m. and my friend had already called that she'd be late. I was led to a table. The place was empty except for a party in a back room. No one brought water until I asked. No one brought a menu until I asked. No one came over to my table for an hour that my friend coming from another state was stuck in traffic. When she arrived bread, water, and a menu appeared for her. The glass of my drink was sticky; I think a waiter should know that and clean it up or get me another drink before I asked. And minor but lastly, the waiter raced through the specials in a lowaccented monotone so we did not understand one word and then we had to ask how much the specials were. Just not the wonderful evening we'd envisioined. Lighting beautiful but service not. The manager also never once stopped at my table . . sort of talked to me on his way to the party in the back.
Our meals were of uniformly good quality and attractively presented. Service was helpful but unobtrusive. This is a good venue for a business lunch.
Portions were very small, especially appetizer salad and eggplant parm. Service was a little slow for a non crowded 1230 lunch. Not worth the price. Just ok
This is a very intimate quiet venue, ideal for a business dinner. The food is delicious, the tables well spaced and the service is excellent. Only comment is needs a bigger wine selection.
Overpriced midtown tourist trap with extremely slow service. One course and a bottle of wine took 2 hours....
I liked the diverse Restaurant Week; that was the primary reason I selected this place. Ample portions with a delicious bread basket. The service was attentive and engaging, without being intrusive. The Cream Caramel dessert was to die for. We enjoyed our meal so much that we would gladly return without the RW pricing.
Attractive solid restaurant with God food, good service, ample portions and a great overall experience.
Nice and quiet, great service
We arrived 15 minutes early. We were seated immediately. We went for the restaurant week lunch. Tables are very well spaced and it is very quiet. Food was good not great. Lovely service. A great place if you want to sit and talk. I would definitely go back.
Montebello has a lot of charm. The food was good, but not over the top with flavor. The salmon didn’t have the taste it should since the vegetables were overpowering. There were also a lot of vegetables with the veal dish. $20 for a glass of house wine is a bit over the top.
A friend and I had lunch during Restaurant Week. The menu looked interesting and had more variety than other r.w. Restaurants. But the food was disappointing. I returned my calves liver because it was mushy and had a mediocre chicken dish instead. There are much better restaurants in this vicinity
Went with friends for Restaurant Week. The food was great and the service was attentive.
Dined with a friend for Restaurant Week lunch. Everything was absolutely first-rate. I had gazpacho and something called Crespelle, which I would have taken for stuffed manicotti (spinach and riccota) with as good a marinara sauce topping as you will ever taste! Loved the calm vibe...kind of old time. My friend had squid salad and salmon and loved it.
Salmon was of a generous size and made with a delicious sauce.
Chicken parmasaen was very good. Chocolate mousse cake
was yummy. Very pleasant atmosphere and roomy seating.
My family flew in from Seattle and Restaurant Week was going on. I picked this restaurant because of the menu. I made a reservation and requested 2 high chairs. I was really excited to try this restaurant because of the good reviews I read online. The veal here was outstanding, best I ever had. My family and I was enjoying our dinner and having a wonderful time. Everything turned sour when I had asked the waiter to take a picture of our family. One of the customers came up to the waiter and yelled “HURRY UP AND TAKE THEIR PICTURE SO THAT THEY CAN GET OUT ALREADY!!!” I’ve never experienced something like this before. This is an Italian restaurant and my family is Chinese. I don’t know if race had anything to do with it, but I felt so uncomfortable and offended, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want it to ruin my night with my family. As I was walking out, the same man got up from his chair, pointed and yelled at my baby and said “YOU NEED TO SHUT THAT BABY UP!!” First of all, my baby was not crying at all. If he was, I would’ve taken him outside. My 16 month old was babbling, giggling, and would get excited from time to time. When I chose this restaurant, it said it was kid friendly and they even provided high chairs. I know that there are some restaurants in the city that don’t allow kids—this was not one of them. It’s such a shame because the restaurant has good food and our waiter was super nice, but it’s not good for more than 6+ people or families who have kids. Although I would love to go back, I don’t think I would want myself or my baby to experience that again.
A very pleasant experience with a friend. I read the great reviews and decided to go there. Bloody Mary was excellent. Wine just perfect. Delicious food. Attentive and efficient service. What else can you ask for?
Good place for a quiet dinner with extended family
Consistently wonderful in all areas--a fantastic dining experience!
When ever we visit N.Y. city, we always dine at Montenello
Lots of choices on menu...good selection of wine by the glass
I have been going to this restaurant for years but stopped over the past 12 months due to construction at an adjacent location that created noise. Happy I went back. The owner is gracious. The service attentive . Food always well prepared with generous portions. Would highly recommend.
I love Montebello — my old-fashioned go-to Italian with terrific food, great service and quiet. Ypu can hear each other talk while you dig into great pastas, fish dishes, veal Milanese. And lovely cocktails and a real Caesar salad. No complaints at all. Consistently excellent.
While visiting NYC for my college reunion, my husband and I returned to Montebello, a restaurant we always try to visit when in Manhattan. This is a beautiful place, a very attractive room, like taking a trip to Italy. Our meal was absolutely delicious, and the service provided by Fernando and Roberto was superb. We felt right at home and appreciated how well they paced the courses of our meals and all the care they provided. For starters, we split an order of their excellent Carpaccio appetizer which was delicate and tender with great flavor and served beautifully. For the main course, I ordered their Crespelle which was as delicious as always, light and flavorful. My husband enjoyed his Tagliolini which included scallops, shrimp, mussels, and clams. For dessert, we chose the Tiramisu from their cart of attractive desserts along with Cappuccino.
This was a fine meal, great experience once again; wonderful service and great authentic Italian food served in a quiet room where you can have a conversation and enjoy a truly relaxing evening. We highly recommend a visit. Thanks, Fernando and Roberto and team for a terrific night.
We have been dining here about once a month since 1991. We never have had a problem as the staff has been very attentive and the quality and presentation of the meal is always excellent.
I passed the restaurant several days ago and it looked so inviting that I decided to try it. What a grand surprise, it was terrific, just what I need for lunch. It is quiet, so I can take business associates, roomy and perfect service. Best of all, the food is great.
This is a true gem. Service, food, and location are perfect for a lunch when shopping. One of the best lunches I have had in NYC.
I have been to Montebello many times and it is a consistently good restaurant, with friendly waiters and a very good maitre-d, excellent food and reasonably priced, good wines. The desserts are exceptional but in reality so is all the food. The layout is good in that conversations can be had without raising your voice and all in all this is an excellent restaurant to attend.
