We asked to eat in the restaurant to enjoy the views but because of staff shortages we were moved to the stable bar (dark and no view). They had my contact details so could have contaced me ahead to see if we still wanted to dine with them, but they did not. So we had no option but to eat there. This meant queuing at the bar to order. No apology was given. Food was OK but not particularly special.

Monsal Head is usually busy because of the excellent food, cosy atmosphere and amazing views Frequented largely by walkers because of the lovely Derby countryside. I had a vegetarian Wellington with Halloumi smoked aubergine and charred red peppers. Imaginative and really well cooked. We both had one course and a glass of wine and it came to £30.

Monsal Head is a hotel and restaurant in the Derbyshire Peaks, and a favourite with us. Its a great drive out of Sheffield, and this spot is understandably popular with walkers. It is perched on top of a steep drop into Monsal Vale, and the open countryside of the Derbyshire Peaks is a wonderful day out for active walkers. As a result, it is quite crowded at lunchtime. I drive my 88 year old mother out, whenever I visit her, just for the views. The menu is amazingly varied, and the food is good quality. The Stables has very few tables, very cosy and intimate with a stove fire, and there is a separate restaurant, but you need to book, as it is not always open.

The Open Table reservation just mentioned the restaurant which was deserted when we arrived. A kitchen staff told us to try the stables bar which was in a separate building and that was a cosy bar with large wood burner and stone flagged floors. The food was nicely done but we were the only guests apart from the bar staff and a couple of their friends who were just chatting amongst themselves. Ambience would have been better with more guests

We have visited the Monsal Head hotel a number of times, and the food and service had always been very good. However on this occasion we arrived to find all the entrances to the hotel with signs on saying 'wedding reception guests only'. After entering and ringing to find out what was going on, a lady came and told us our booking had been moved to the Stables bar. On this visit the bar was completely empty, there was only one member of staff behind the bar, who seemed to be more interested in cleaning than us. The food was good as usual (same kitchen), however we booked a table at the restaurant so we could have a good evening meal, to be waited on, and to have a lovely evening. This was clearly lacking - we should have been notified before we arrived that we would not be in the main restaurant so we could have made a decision as to whether we were still wanting the table. We have visited the bar in the past and it has been very lively and full. Had the bar in the evening been this busy our evening would have been far, far from what we wanted. A real shame - we will be considering if we will come back again.

Booked online for 4, but turned up with 6. That was not a problem just added another table and 2 place settings. The food was excellent, not a single complaint from anyone. Service was unhurried, but that was fine as we were out for an extended lunch for a sixtieth birthday. The view is amazing. Very enjoyable.

The food at Monsal Head was outstanding. Beautifully presented with full flavours and perfect sized portions. We had a very attentive waiter and the restaurant was spacious and tables a good distance apart. A fantastic location at the top of Monsal Head and just right for the end of a hard day cycling in the Peaks.
