Monkeypod Kitchen - Wailea Ratings and Reviews
We had booked a reservation for this establishment and when we arrived we had to wait 45 minutes. What was the purpose of having a reservation? The food was very poor. The fish sandwich was miniscule to say the least and came with 1 tbsp. of some sort of coleslaw. The fish and chips were extremely salty. Very disappointing considering the cost and previous reviews.
Our waiter was a sweet heart he did a fab job on selling the special & I didn’t think the special was as good as he described it was a very very tiny piece of fish the littlest I have ever been served . But the deserts r amazing and the drinks were delish ! Would I go back for sure just skip the fish special.
My wife and I were celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary. We were seated on the patio just after sunset and the view was beautiful. The restaurant was very busy but the noise level wasn’t bad outside; easy to hold a conversation.
We ordered the lobster deviled eggs for an appetizer, the Ribeye Steak and the Ahi for our entrees, they were all excellent! Our waiter then brought us a slice of the coconut cream pie “on the house” in honor of our anniversary. It was an amazing meal and memorable evening .
We highly recommend this Wailea restaurant.
I've eaten at Monkeypod numerous times, and I usually think the food is passable and affordable. Their happy hour is a good deal and the pizzas are usually good. But this lunch was really awful. My husband's pizza was cold and soggy; my pulled pork sandwich was awful. I think I'll try to avoid this place except when friends want to go there.
Having heard a LOT about Monkey Pod, I think I went on an off night--I had to send both my items back for issues (which I rarely ever do). It also took some time to get to our waiter's attention with the issues, so my partner was mostly done with his meal before mine was attended to. When we did see our server, he was great and apologetic and even took the item off the menu. After having had some AMAZING meals on Maui this trip (what a foodie hot spot the island has become) it was a bummer to end our trip with a sub-par experience from a place we were really looking forward to. I'm absolutely going to chalk this one up to ours being "that table" on an off night.
The food was excellent. No complaints there. My major issue was the pacing of the meal. They had us completely finished drinks, apps, entrees, dessert, coffee in under an hour. I was literally outside waiting for an uber in 55 minutes. Bill was on the table in 45. I ordered a second drink and had to drink it with my coffee. If this were a Chili's that would be fine, but for a restaurant with an "absolutely no walk in policy" that's absurd. They're calling themselves a gastro pub, but that doesn't really jive with a host seated bar.
Everything about the restaurant is great...food, service, drinks, activity level. It can get pretty noisy, so if you want a quiet place, this is not for you. I think it is one of the funnest places in Wailea. The bartenders are very friendly and helpful and seem to be having a blast. They are very good at making you feel welcome.
If you’re in Wailea, make reservations on Open Table (there’s a sign outside the restaurant that said no walk ins, but not sure how true that is). Definitely start with a pizza. We had the pineapple and pork pizza with macadamia nut pesto and it was amazing. We each had tacos (fish for me, beef for my husband) and they were good, but the pizza was better. We ended dinner with a slice of banana cream pie...delish!
Decent for lunch, awful for dinner. The dinner setting is disorganized and the quality of food deteriorates with the large dinner crowd. The price is comparable to Mama’s Fish House and the food is one tenth the quality. I cannot comprehend other reviews raving about their Mai Tai’s as they are the worst I’ve had on Maui in three years. The macadamia-crusted Mahi-mahi was cold, undercooked, and tasted off. We had been here for lunch the day before with better food and drink. At dinner, they crammed extra tables into the walkways (clear fire code violations) and stuffed patrons into the most trafficked and uncomfortable orientations possible. After four meals here (two lunches, two dinners) I would never recommend this venue for dinner. The dinner shift is a train wreck you should avoid and the food is mediocre at best.
I went here twice on this visit. I come to Maui annually and always come here more than once. Be sure to make a reservation to avoid the wait, although ample bar seating is great for lunch or dinner as well. Awesome craft beer selection served at 29 degrees. Cold beer is hard to find on the Islands!
This place really hit the spot - fresh breezes on the patio at night! Natia was a GREAT server. AMAZING : Coco Corn Chowder, Organic Mac Nut Crusted Mahi-Mahi (5 stars), and the Grilled Ahi (5 stars) -- decent : Lobster Pasta (for $50, expected a bit more magic) - the banana cream pie was divine - would come back in a heart beat.
