Monkey Cat Ratings and Reviews
We (party of 4 adults and one child) arrived at 5:25 for our 5:30 reservation. While everyone there was very nice, we were very disappointed in the service: had to ask twice for the Shirley Temple, (which was made with soda water, not 7-up); never did get the Coke ordered, we had to wait 30 minutes for our order to be taken, then wait another 35 minutes for our food to arrive and one person only ordered a salad, two were already-cooked fish stews, another was appetizer of ribs with the most difficult was seared scallops, which was delicious. After ordering dessert, another wait of about 15 minutes before two small $8 cake slices arrived! When our bill didn't show up after having finished dessert and waiting another 15-20 mins, we finally just stood up and walked to the door, having to ask someone for our bill, another 5-minute wait for our server to appear with it. No one was at the check-in desk for me to leave my signed receipt with so we just paid it and left it there--not happy about that either.
I realize it was Saturday night but people were coming in after us, eating and leaving by the time we got our food! There was no one behind the bar and the kitchen must have been short-handed too because our server disappeared for long periods of time--cooking? This Auburn store needs to staff-up for a Saturday night.
It was a special occasion for us and we left feeling more than a little frustrated, disappointed and, frankly, embarrassed by our choice of dining places.
Monkey Cat is a reliable and very pleasant restaurant. The wait staff are invariably pleasant and competent. I wish the menu had more gluten=free options. There are no gluten-free small plates for a starter course and only a few gluten -free salads Most of the gluten free dinner options are red meat and it would be nice to have a poultry and fish selection. That said, I appreciate any gluten-free options and I also appreciate having gluten-free choices marked on the menu.
I haven’t had such a good meal in a long time! I had the Filet with shrimp and my date had the duck. Both of us absolutely loved the meal. Oh yeah, the desert was really good as well! Definitely worth the check out. It was nice to walk around downtown Auburn as well. Thank you for the great meal, Monkey Cat!
Host and wait staff were very friendly. They were knowledgeable about both the food and wine list. We had steak and seafood and both were fresh and flavorful. Serving sizes were on the generous side. Topped it off with coffee and caramel cheesecake. We were both satisfied and happy as we strolled through Auburn after dinner. Thanks!
We were recommended to have dinner her by our hotel. It was a good choice. The menu did not have any monkey or cat but, what it did have was great. My wife had a very nice cordon blue chicken and I have the sole. My wife could to eat all the chicken since it was such a large portion. We would go back if we get back to Auburn.
We had an excellent meal and evening at Monkey Cat. Kudos to Erika, our server, who made sure we enjoyed our meal and evening, with her attention to detail and encouragement to sample. We had the pork belly appetizer which was yummy to say the least. We all ordered the halibut special and it was delicious and moist and a very generous amount. Discovered a new local winery: Fawnridge. Perfect balance for the halibut. Just make sure you check out the "locals" side of the wine menu. (Looking forward to making a trip to the winery soon..) There's always room for dessert! Love their lemon cake and the chocolate dessert was perfect. Reservations highly recommended...Looking forward to the next time!
Stopped in because we were hungry and part of hordes driving to Tahoe for the long Labor Day weekend. We made a reservation, got there on time, and waiting more than 15 minutes to be seated. Our waiter was very nice and got our food out fairly fast, though a simple request--some extra lemon for fish that was a bit bland--was never taken care of. they were clearly short-staffed and slammed--the harried staff did not create the most pleasant dining experience, though. I would avoid it on busy weekends, for sure.
Frankly after reading the reviews we expected more. Very nice interior, quiet, and good service, friendly without being unprofessional. My husband had a good craft beer, I had the Margarita but it was nothing special. We split a Caesar Salad, ordinary, under-dressed with pedestrian dressing. My husband had the shrimp stir fry and liked it. I had the pork tenderloin and ordered it rare and it arrived rare, very tasty meat. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and the green beans el dente crunchy. It was a nice meal but not one that is calling me back to Monkey Cat anytime soon, but we will go again.
