The name refers to the ancient Mexican monarchy honouring the influence both his parents made on his culinary style. While his mother inspired our sister restaurant, Ophelia, the familial tradition has continued here at Monarca where you’ll find playful dishes and a lively atmosphere inspired by Chef Higareda’s father.

Francisco’s father lived near the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico’s Michoacán region. Chef Higareda spent several summers here with his family enjoying the local Tlahualiles (defeated warriors) Festival. The festival celebrates the feast of Santiago Apóstol, patron saint of Sahuayo. The battle depicted in the festival is still debated today in Mexico and refers to military conflicts before, during, and after the arrival of the Spanish. It’s a memory he cherishes from his childhood.

This was a good restaurant! The food was interesting and tasty, and looked good on the plate. The service was slow and as beautiful as they were, the servers didn't know a lot about the food or wine. I would go back, as the location and the food were awesome.

Not what we expected. Very loud, pumping music. Very young vibe. Lots of partying tables. Pushy server. Food was average. Won't go again.

Mother’s Day was a miss unfortunately. It took 45 minutes for our server to bring the “Complimentary Mother’s Day Beverage” to our table and she only brought it after we ordered another drink! She said she gave my drink to another table that arrived after us! The ambience is dark jungle themed which was the only thing that wasn’t bad about this experience. The food took forever, we felt absolutely ignored by our waitress as we watched her dote over a table of men over and over while we sat there absolutely invisible! When the food finally arrived it was all cold and was not enjoyable. However some were artistically for food decorated. I suppose this was the illusion of fine Mexican dining. The meat was basically nonexistent shaved as thin as paper and barely any of it. For the price you should eat like a King! The enchiladas were like soup. The tostadas had no flavour. They don’t even have proper hot sauce to add some kick. This place has potential to be great. The first thing is for them recognize is that their customers aren’t ignorant fools. Don’t believe the hype! Until they get things straightened out it’s a waste of time and money. One & Done!

The food is delicious, but it's too long waiting for the food, the prices are a little bit expensive, the service is excelent.

Went to Monarca with a group of friends and we were blown away. The food is next-level — authentic Mexican with a creative twist, every dish was bursting with flavour and beautifully plated. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in what they serve. The vibe is what really sets Monarca apart. A live DJ was spinning smooth house beats all night, creating the perfect atmosphere — lively, stylish, and full of good energy. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay for hours, sipping cocktails and enjoying the moment. Service was on point and the space has a unique design that adds to the overall experience. Monarca is exactly the type of restaurant/lounge hybrid that Vancouver needs more of. We’ll definitely be back — often!

really lovely server, delicious food, and fun decor. it was a little loud but to be expected, and the table were pretty crammed in. other than that the vibes were really good

I went to Monarca for a date night with my husband. We were seating right away for our reservation and was told that we can stay only for two hours. After being seated, it took about 20 minutes to figure out who our server was as no one came to us. We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 main course - all 10/10. The other negative experience was that we were accidentally given someone else’s appetizer, and server was hard to find most of the time. We had to wave down other servers for assistance. By the time it was near our 2-hour seating limit, we skipped on the desserts we intended on getting as we spent a lot of time waiting for our server to be visible.

It would have been a really good experience however staff kept rushing us out - my friends were still in the washroom when they came around and started insisting we pay the bill. Then it was my turn to go to the washroom and I probably took 5-6 mins, only to come back to find different people sitting at our table and my friends waiting outside in rain. Apparently 3 different people came by to usher them out - they had to vacate the table because another party was waiting. Also funny thing was lots of other tables were available. Good customer service would have been to seat the waiting party elsewhere until we were done which only would have been another 10 mins or so so we could finish our drinks. And just for reference our reservation was for 6 pm and we were ushered out at 820. We know tables are generally held for two hrs but we didn’t get our drinks till 645pm (we had ordered at 610pm) and we didn’t get our food till 720. The food was good and aesthetic was nice and vibe fun but customer service lacking.
