Located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s historic Strawberry Banke, Mombo is a fun, high-end restaurant right by Prescott Park and the Piscataqua River. The interior has a very cozy, casual feel with wooden beams running across the ceiling. The staff are both warm and inviting.
However, the menu at Mombo is what really steals the show. There is the homemade charcuterie which was chosen by Yankee Magazine as the best in all of New England. There are also plenty of meat and poultry options to choose from, too. When the weather is nice, you can sit on the patio at Mombo and enjoy a unique seasonal menu.

This was our second dinner at Mombo and we were equally pleased with the food and service. My fiance and I even planned to have our rehearsal dinner at the restaurant. The service is exceptional and I can't say enough about the delicious food and drink. I highly recommend Mombo for dinner, drinks, and a wonderful evening!
Traveled from Boston on an overnight in Portsmouth...what a great surprise! One of the better restaurants I have been to in a while. Atmosphere was wonderful, two fire places, open kitchen and friendly staff. Only thing better was the food! A truly excellent experience. Very well done.
Blazing fireplaces, friendly yet professional service from the moment we arrived and were
lead to our table in the corner. The food was amazing, from the bread board with several
warm offerings, to the main course. I had the duck which was perfectly cooked, probably
the best duck dish I have ever enjoyed. All 4 of us agreed to frequent this restaurant
more. Right next to downtown, with parking--no less. Go skating, then walk over and
let them treat you to something great to eat.
The food was very good, and the service was fine. The pricing was steep however . Sides are sold separately and were not generously proportioned. My total bill for one person (3 of us shared a bottle of $32 wine) was $58. Dining room was so loud that we could not converse- and the place was mostly empty because it was a stormy night. There are many, many fine restaurants in Portsmouth with better food, a quieter dining room for a more reasonable price.
Our 1st visit fell short of our expectations, with an 8:30 open table reservation we arrived a early after taking to Tom on the phone about the possibility of an earlier sitting or a short wait at the bar, but the bar area was full. A open table in a corner was offered us, it was the equivalent to a cocktail table with little space with a corner bench adjacent to the bar. The bread board had to also hold our wine bottle. Items had to be removed to make room for the next offering. It was disappointing to watch couples arrive after us be seated at a std. size dining table. The bar patrons were loud, which made for a much too loud atmosphere. The entrees were good not great, scallops were perfectly cooked, but the plate did not compliment them. The osso bucco was a tough piece of meat. Getting a table in the upper level or away from the bar is strongly recommended. I find it a bit overrated.
Outstanding Food! Service was excellent! Went their for my birthday and it was our first time at this restaurant. Will definitely return. If anything was wrong it was that the table we wanted was next to the fireplace which is right near the bar. Their is a energetic bar scene but the food and service made up for the noise. It wasn't too crazy but the seat we had was not the romantic table setting we were hoping for. We will go back but will choose a table on the second floor.
We were in the Portsmouth area for a girls' weekend over Martin Luther King weekend and had a wonderful winter meal at Mombo. The hit of the evening was a roasted acorn squash bisque with a braised short rib marmalade with almonds. Other high marks were for the beet salad -- artistically presented and delicious. Grilled swordfish was great, as was the veal osso buco. Our server was attentive and quite knowledgeable about the menu. The atmosphere was perfect for a very cold evening -- fireplaces, wood beams, warm and inviting. We all agreed we would come back!
We started with the cheese course which was a perfect portion size for 3 people. You got to taste everything, but weren't so full that you couldn't eat your entree. My son had the bone-in pork chop and said that it was really delicious. I had the harvest salad and my husband had the tuna, both of which were delicious. It is worth noting that we ordered one of the wines on their "notable finds" list and it was both a good value and tasty. Our server, Tim, was helpful without being intrusive. We will definitely dine at Mombo again!
The duck confit was extraordinary! The lamb pies were good but could not compare to the confit. My wife is pregnant so the seared tuna entree did not go over well But, they immediately removed it and returned with a selection of vegetables and forbidden rice risotto that was great. The service was just right attentive, knowledgeable but not overbearing. I would recommend Mombo to all my foodie colleagues, family and good friends alike for sure. I think it is definitely worth the price of admission. Tony and his team took care of us making us feel welcome and appreciated from the moment we arrived till we were walking out the door. Everything was extremely well done!
My husband and I both began with the lobster bisque and it was excellent. We also both ordered the shrimp and scallops. My husband thought they were excellent but I found them a little spicy for my taste. We also ordered grilled asparagus and roasted brussels sprouts which were excellent. I do wish I had asked more questions about my entree before I ordered because I would have ordered something else and probably would have been more satisfied. I would recommend this restaurant and I would try them again.
We dined early at Mombo and all four of us found the experience to be ideal. Beginning with the perfect level of service (attentive, personable, informed but never intrusive), we were delighted with the tasty fare and warm atmosphere. Two of us chose the duck breast, a complex preparation that benefited from its being lovingly executed. The black trumpet dumplings were savory complements to the tender and flavorful duck. Our starters included the incomparable beet and goat cheese salad, the spicy crab cakes and the duck confit. All three were amazing. We loved the curried quinoa bread to start and marveled at the zaatar-inflected butter. The wine list struck a nice balance between breadth and approachability; the cocktails were superb.
I am already looking forward to my next visit to Mombo.
This place is a favorite, I have been several times and never disappointed! I took my grown sons for Christmas Eve, and although the kitchen was busy, the service was great, the drinks fantastic and the food Phenomenal. The Tuna vinegar bites for appetizers are too good to describe, the boys had filet mignon and that Hangar steak which they raved about, I had the Seared Ahi tuna with a risotto that was to die for...you can't go wrong with Mombo!
Creative menu with outstanding service and ambiance. A few dishes misfired, but the ambition is laudable. Bone marrow flan, delicious. Far more delicate and subtle than one might think. The charcuterie is marvelous--and huge. Share it with a friend at the bar over a libation. Classy dining, worth a visit.
Nestled between vibrant downtown Portsmouth and the historical Strawberry Banke, Mombo, just like the name suggests, is a little of what you would expect and a little of what you would not. The quaint yet modern atmosphere pays equal tribute to the hip art scene and deep seated history of it's geographical surroundings. The food is noteworthy - both cutting edge and comfortable, but the welcoming and friendly service sets this 19th century general store turned 21st century dining spot apart from the crowd... not to mention free parking! I would say Mombo will have you dancing to a new beat!
This place has a warm welcoming feel with a roaring fire by the front door. The menu has a lot to choose from and the dishes are quite creative. We all enjoyed our dishes which included salmon, tuna, and a shrimp and scallop dish. Appetizers such as beet salad were also excellent. My only complaints are: the descriptions of the dishes on the menu were overly complicated so that it was sometimes really hard to imagine what the dish could be; and the portions were very large - a restaurant of this caliber should concentrate on interesting tastes rather than quantity. The desserts seemed overly complex - either overly constructed, or overly deconstructed.

This is one of the best restaurants in Portsmouth NH. It is on one of the side streets by the waterfront however its one of the only places to eat in downtown Portsmouth that has a large parking lot. Food is good and the wait staff is fantastic. Try the chicken or the moon fish...
We live half time in Portsmouth. This is on my short list of "must eat at" every time I'm in town. The food is exceptional, friendly bar and elegant dining at tables. I recently took my wife there for the first time and it is one of the few places we both give a big thumbs up. You will not be disappointed. Easy parking. Prices are on the high side, but definitely they have the value right as this is food that is worth the bucks.

Mombo has a ver warm, cozy winter feeling to it. The service level is excellent, the menu is extensive and descriptively written. Unfortunately, the chef tries too hard to create so many different favors that the result is a confused palate. Oslo bucco was tender as ever but the favors were a strong strong scent of cinnamon and Rosemary that totally overpowered a very well cooked piece if meat.
Overally we were happy with Mombo. Our table was not ready on time, which was fine as we enjoyed a drink at the bar. Our dinner took quite a while to arrive and at one point a drink ticket got lost. They offered to buy us the next round, but we were already done drinking so it really did not do anything for us. The food was great once it arrived.
Mombo has a very charming, classic New England look. We really enjoyed our server. She gave good recommendations and was very attentive. We hung out at the bar after dinner and enjoyed the "scene" down there. There are some fun banquettes for groups of 4-6 and there is an upstairs area for groups of 20-30 people. Menus change to fit the seasons, which I enjoy.
Very nicely laid out tables, great ambience. Food was really fun and excellent. The Duck breast was the best we have ever had.... we have eaten duck in France, and highly acclaimed "Peking Duck" in Beijing. Neither came close! Website accurately describes the restaurant... we picked it for a special occasion in our lives- and it did not disappoint!
We have been to Mombo several times and made sure to make a reservation during restaurant week as it is an economical way to go to one of our favorite spots. The acorn squash bisque and the mako shark appetizers were fantastic and the highlights of our meals. My husband enjoyed the pea and mint puree with his perfectly cooked lamb. The Mahi-Mahi was okay, but I doubt I would order it again. If it hadn't been the only non-meat option on the Restaurant week menu, I would have gone for something else. For dessert, we both chose the pecan pie with a fig and something puree. We love pecan pie and were anticipating it throughout the meal. Sadly, it reminded us more of a fig-newton filling than pecan pie. It was quite tasty, but the description led us both to anticipate something quite different.
The hostess (Casey?) was lovely, greeting us warmly, taking our coats, checking in during the meal. Our waiter Ryan could have used some lessons from her. He seemed a bit unfamiliar with the menu and commented to us more than once that it was really busy. When we finished our main courses, he took our plates and told us dessert would be out shortly and walked away before we could inquire about coffee or tea. We did manage to track him down and order both. The Chamomile lavender tea was fantastic.
Overall, we know we will be back, but it wasn't the night we expected.
The food was good but there was not enough food for the price they charge, Some of our meals were excellent and others were under par, i.e., the Mahi mahi (extremely small, thin piece of fish and blackened until it was dry. Some of The dessert portions were extremely small and some of the main ingredients were barely included (i.e. carrot cake creme brule) and pear desserts. Service was excellent. Some meals were not served at a proper temperature from the kitchen.
Even though we ate off the restaurant week menu the food was outstanding. Our waitress, Amanda, was welcoming as well as friendly. She made sure everything was good throughout each course and even discussed her favorite dishes of the menu. It was a nice atmosphere and the building itself was unique. Will definitely be coming back.
We loved our dining experience at Mombo. Cozy, chic atmosphere reminded me of a mini White Barn Inn. Wait staff was superb. Menu is creative and nicely presented. The chicken entree was the best at our table. Lots of great flavors and unusual preparations. I loved the smoking maple dijon sauce on the duck "Monte Cristo" - very cool watching the smoke float out of the bottle - and added a wonderful dimension to the dish. House made bread was nice, but the bread served with the steak tartar and mussels reminded me of supermarket bread. A simple fix that would make a big difference! Elegant and sophisticated floral arrangements were a beautiful touch.
