Moroccan
Moltaqa is translated as a place where people meet, gather and talk. Beautiful and cozy Moroccan restaurant, that brings healthy and flavourful food, wine varietal from all over the world and creates radiant oasis in the heart of Gastown. Moroccan cuisine is a delicious combination of mouthwatering flavors that make it unique. Moroccan food is incredibly diverse, thanks to the country's interaction with other cultures and nations over the centuries. Influenced by Berbers, Arabs, Andalusian, Mediterranean and especially French. We use traditional Moroccan Tagines for cooking, where the convection produced by the design of the pot cooks everything perfectly. The dish is naturally and continuously basted - ingredients are moist and the meat buttery. No Fat, No Oils used. All our meat is halal and hormone- and antibiotic-free. We also have lots of vegan and pescatarian options.

Not a bad place overall. Ambience could have been warmer The wine glasses seemed a bit small; I’m not convinced it was 5 ounces but I could be mistaken.
The food was fresh and flavorful.

We were excited about eating here and maybe all of the excellent reviews unreasonably increased our expectations? The physical venue itself was OK. The two waitstaff were very attentive and were working very hard. However, for us the food was disappointing. The non-alcoholic drink menu is very limited by the way. We ordered four items from the menu with an intention of sharing and perhaps it was just our bad luck but we didn't find any of the four selections to our liking and one of them was simply inedible. We finished our meal with a cheesecake that is likely brought in and it was quite good. But we were expecting rich and varying seasonings and fragrances with our food and actually found the items to be on the blander side or alternatively almost off putting. I don't claim to have a sophisticated international palate and so maybe this is what Moroccan food is --- and it is just not appealing to us. But is proved to be an expensive venture indeed. After picking through the meal we ended up going next door to Save On Meats and had grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup which were truly tasty. Enough said with that, eh?

The ambience, comfort and service at Moltaqa are all very good. The aubergine starter was excellent, a very nice combination of sweet and bitter. The mint tea was stewed, way too strong, nasty -- never had it like that in Morocco. The mains were good and nicely presented, but only OK. Both lamb dishes, shank and shoulder, had some bitter aftertaste. Seasoning in the tagine was slightly off and it was too salty -- although it's often very salty in Morocco. We enjoyed the visit, the food was good but not outstanding, the service, however, was superb. While it would recommend the restaurant, I'd do so with some reservations. Not sure we'll go back.

Don’t bother. I was excited that a Moroccan restaurant opened in Vancouver. Alas, the food tastes far from authentic. Bland flavors masked by sweetness without any of the depth of Moroccan spices and technique. The restaurant was “out” of harissa that night - the key condiment that makes Moroccan cuisine dazzle. There is nothing to recommend and we will not return. While I commend the spirit behind this venture the kitchen is so inept that we came away both disappointed and hungry.

Thanks for your review Douglas, We are glad you know Harissa. Sorry we were out and that, this was not to your taste. Other reviewers here like our food. Moroccan cooks making Pastillas with icing sugar and cinnamon is very traditional, we do put less icing sugar than in Morocco , our tagines have up to 32 spices as lamb shank and are cooked with dried fruits traditionally not bland for sure. Beef is cooked with honey as in Morocco. We have savoury tagines as preserved lemon chicken, lamb, fish.

This is the closest to authentic Moroccan food I've had in years! It brought back so many memories. The staff was so friendly, and helpful. The waiter made some excellent suggestions. We were a quite a large group, and his input was really appreciated, so we could gauge how much food to order.
The ambiance was fun, and the food was fantastic. The only reason I gave the food 4 stars instead of 5 was because the serving sizes are a bit small.
Still, well worth it. I'd go again, and have already recommended it to friends.

First time visiting and we had a great time. We had a 9pm booking and it took some time to get us seated, but we had drink at the bar so all good. Great table right at the front of the restaurant; we will be back!

Overall, had a great experience at Moltaqa. The food was very flavourful, we really enjoyed the flatbread and tangines that we got. Drinks were good and the dancing was fun to watch! Receiving the food and bill took a little bit of time but not too bad.

Moltaqa had a concise menu that allowed us to try a number of Moroccan dishes without being overwhelmed. The food was all delicious. The service was a bit slow at some points, but overall very friendly. We did see the belly dancer around 9pm, which added some surprise to the atmosphere.

Moltaqa, is a good cultural-palate-cuisine experience for Vancouver. Appreciate the host/owner's going around to make sure guests are welcomed seated and served well. The air handling and ventilation is the only gap that needs improvement, the ambiance, decor and feel is well done. Thank you.

When we arrived, we explained that we had a reservation for 6pm. The host/owner showed us to a lovely table by the window. Unfortunately, the restaurant did not notify Open Table that we showed up for our reservation, which created some confusion. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and the owner/host stopped over several times to give us information. There was a bit of a delay in taking our drink orders when we arrived because the belly dancer was 'doing her thing' in our vicinity. The owner/host was apologetic and provided a complimentary mezze, a nice touch. A general comment: I think servers in this type of restaurant (ethnic in character and theme) need to know about Moroccan culture food. Also, servers in any restaurant serving good wine need to be knowledgeable about wine.
We liked this restaurant and the food, and will be back.

My friends and I decided to take a day trip and we filled it with 3 restaurants and 3 dessert places. By far, this was the best food that we had. It was absolutely amazing!! The experience itself was absolutely amazing and our waiter was amazing and so patient. Absolutely loves it and when my family comes to visit, I am definitely coming back.

I have had both lunch and dinner at this restaurant and enjoyed both immensely! I had the lamb tagine and the Apple and arugula salad for dinner. The lamb was perfectly cooked with wonderful spices and melted in my mouth. The salad had a pomegranate vinegar dressing that complemented the salad perfectly and was also great to dip the warm bread in.

given that i had not experienced Moroccan food before but got a good heads up from a local store down the street i was more then impressed with service food and atmosphere. The one down side is the view across the street but then Vancouver is a city dealing with a homelessness issue and one has to keep that in mind

Overpriced and underwhelming food. Tagine was very disappointing - the lamb shank didn't have much ingredients or flavour. The chicken pastille was very dry and also strange that there was icing sugar on top. Save your money and time and get a recipe on line to make your own tagine at home. I definitely won't be back.

Reasonably priced and very low key decor. The food speaks for itself and, in a word, its awesome!
Will return again...and again! So much to try; the tagines were excellent and the sausage was of the highest quality. Morover, it was halal, so the assurance of quality was a happy bonus.
