Located in the Morrison House Hotel, a boutique property of Marriott (formerly a Kimpton property), MoHo is a stylish venue with an eclectic style mixing modern and classic historic Alexandria. Very quiet...my companion and I started out as the only diners, but we were joined by others as the evening wore on. The menu was a bit limited, but the food was tasty and delivered with enthusiasm by our hostess, Cynthia, who shared some history on the property.
A hidden gem for dinner or for a late night cocktail.
I really wanted to like Ashlar. Years prior, I had eaten at The Grille and was so enamored by the place and food, but Ashlar fell flat. The restaurant and bar provided a great ambiance, but the food was lacking flavor. The server and bartender—one in the same, since they seemed understaffed—was friendly and kind, but was pulled in too many directions, forgetting our appetizer, forgetting changes to our entrees. Too pricey for lackluster food and forgetful service. Would not recommend at present, but see potential.
I don't even know where to begin. I'm a foodie and I was raised in the hotel industry.... MY Expectation was way too high, the food was average at best...and we were starving! Paid $50 for breakfast for 3 people. And we drank water. Never again!!
Wow, service was horrible! I saw many other reviews comment on service but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Well, the other reviews were spot on...service was poor, slow, lacking any emotion. We even saw another table not get any service beyond drinks and they got up and walked out. Even though there were three people at any given time in the dining room nothing seemed to move any faster...especially our food.
Let me start with drinks - ordered a coffee, a tea and 2x fruit smoothies...coffee came out, then smoothies (which were about room temp, barely thicker than milk and not sweet at all)....had to ask about my tea (really??? it is hot water and a tea bag...why the long delay?!). And, the food - we waited nearly 45mins to get our food after we ordered. They delivered the kids pancakes and my omelet as ordered (surprisingly) then another omelet with a side of toast only (menu states it comes with home fries but we had to ask for them as well as the side of bacon we ordered--how do you forget to include all the standard items for each entrée??). Also, the menu is really limited...if you like options, check the menu before you arrive or you may be disappointed.
Atmosphere was nice and quaint but with a crowd of people it gets a bit loud. It is kid-friendly in the sense you can bring a kid there but they do not have any coloring sheets/crayons for them...be prepared to bring your own.
It was a swing and a miss and I cannot recommend Ashlar to anyone else, sadly. Best of luck to them bouncing back before it's too late.
We used to love the Grille and had great hopes for Ashlar but were disappointed. The service was so-so; the appetizers and dessert were fine but the entrees were also only so-so. The pork chop was slightly dry and the ribeye overdone. Lastly, parking is limited nearby and the valet was nowhere to be found on arrival and again on departure.
Opportunity lost. The space is beautifully remodeled. The waitress sat us down with me yes and I had to ask for the cocktail list, then I had to ask for a wine list. She recited names of grapes then I had to politely ask for a list of actual wines. We ordered two glasses of the same wine and the bartender came over opened a new. Ottowa and poured the glasses not offering to taste the wine. He returned 2/3 the way through dinner with a full wine list, a bit late.
The deviled eggs and cucumber avocado small plates were good. We split an entire and ordered a side of Brussels sprouts. It turned out the pork chop came with Brussels sprouts but rather than tell us the server delivered a main course with an identical side vegetable rather than recommend a different side dish
The food is good, the service seems to be under educated for the level of dining the restaurant menu deserves.
The menu was very different that what was on Yelp. Their web link was broken. So I was surprised that none of the ladies gems shown in the yelp photos were on tonight's menu.
I hope they improve. The design of the space deserves better service as does the kitchen staff who deliver on the cuisine.
Very limited menu choices. Almost a disappointment. Then we had the deviled eggs, which were the best any of us had ever eaten! The shrimp cocktail had a very pleasant and unique sauce. The BBQ ribs (special for the evening) were plentiful and exceptional. Our special compliment to Brad, who was the bartender, Maitre d', and waiter. He did it all and was fun, professional, and efficient.
Nothing special about this restaurant. Food service was extremely slow. We were the only couple waiting for food and it took nearly a half hour. I had pancakes and bacon and he had an meat omelette. My bacon was burnt and had to be sent back. I was not impressed with this extremely small restaurant with slow service.
First time diner. I would not have found this hidden gem without OpenTable. Very quiet and personal, I had the whole room to myself. I think this restaurant would do very well if more people knew about it. The food was excellent and the service was attentive, but left me to my reading. I will definitely be back.
This was our first experience at Ashlar located in the Kimpton Hotel on Duke St - and we'll be returning some time. It was very quiet when we sat down, but the decor is impeccable and made for a nice calm ambiance on a rainy Sunday. The eggs Benedict was cooked perfectly, and we really enjoyed the Nutella pancakes! Can't go wrong with classic brunch items.
We are long time customer of the Morrison House Grill and this was our first time back to the restaurant (now Ashlar) since the renovation and change in management.
1) They have five entrees (and two steaks) on their menu, but believe it or not they were out of two of them (Scottish Salmon and Braised Pork Shank). Of course...what are the odds that those were the two that my wife and I wanted? Note to staff, tell people what you are out of when you hand out the menus, not after your guests have carefully studied them and picked exactly the things your are out of. We were disappointed from the start. Not sure how a supposedly high end restaurateur can run out of forty percent of its entrees, especially when the menu is so limited to begin with, but they did. It reminded me of the Monty Python cheese shop skit where the guy is in a cheese shop asking for one kind of cheese after another and being told each time he asks that they are out of that particular kind of cheese...only to eventually find out they are out of all of them.
2) The waiters AND the front podium host were dressed like hipster slobs. Untucked, unpressed shirts, white tee-shirt tails sticking out the back and almost everyone of them in jeans. Our waiter was a nice kid (looked about eighteen) but was wearing a stained, dirty, wrinkled white shirt that looked like he had slept in it, several times. Very distracting. Again, note to Management, oh never mind, it's too obvious.
3) I had a pork chop (they offered it in place of the braised pork shank). It was okay. Ruby Tuesdays kind of okay. Fridays kind of okay. Your average everyday sit down restaurant chain kind of okay, but of course at more than double your average everyday sit down restaurant kind of price. Nothing special about it at all. Mashed potatoes, spinach and a pork chop. My wife had some kind of white fish they substituted for the salmon they were out of.
Let's just say meh.
This was a family gathering for brunch - there were 7 of us. I don't think the Ashlar restaurant makes good use of the lovely space that used to be the grill room. The room was somewhat dark and non-descript. It was not what I had in mind for my family to see who were visiting from the Midwest. They did not have pancakes available - how do you run out of pancakes? No flour, eggs, butter, milk? I though the menu offering was quite limited. I felt sorry for the server who seemed to be working alone. I would not return.
Three of us met for brunch 10/9 to celebrate a birthday. I arrived extra early (11:30 am) and,was greeted by a host. I was told I could be seated at our table but I chose to wait in a comfortable chair in the little lobby area . At the time, I was the only person in there. However, there were several used coffee cups that hadn't been thrown away or taken with, and I was surprised to see them around the room. Also there were coffee rings and evidence of small spills of cream on three tables -- none of which had been wiped up.
I tried to use the coffee service but found the coffee completely empty. I waited at least fifteen minutes, then told the host that the coffee was empty and asked if service had ended.
He said no, the front desk usually takes care of that, and he went to talk to them. They did shortly come out with fresh coffee. But no one cleaned up the used cups or drips.
We were seated in a room in back of the bar because there was a baby shower going on. I'm hoping the main restaurant dining area is prettier, but it may be my taste. Our waiters were very nice and attentive. But the brunch menu is so limited! Maybe that's why when I arrived the host went on and on about all the fabulous brunch cocktails in the back of the menu. I didn't tell him that I knew us girlfriends would just be having coffee or iced tea with our brunch. By the way, the woman whose birthday it was ordered a hamburger and says it wasn't good at all. I do t know what happened but I felt terrible because it my my idea to go there. I did enjoy my omelet however -- it was was truly good.
I know you're recently reopened but I hope things improve - I'm reluctant to take my husband there now.
A serious disappointment, with limited menu. There was no one to greet us upon arrival, and one of the chefs sat at a table in the dining room and left when he saw us enter. We had a reservation for 6 pm and arrived on time. The food and wine were not very good, and the only bright spot was our server who was energetic and friendly.
We had eaten at this restaurant previously before it was remodeled. The food had been excellent. This time my steak was very chewy. My husband's chicken was just OK. It had been several years since we had been there and the menu has changed dramatically. Bring back the old menu.
It's hard to find pork shank so when I saw it on the menu, I had to try it. Just OK, not grand and amazing. The gravy seemed like generic brown sauce. I also understand why one reviewer noted that the mashed potatoes tasted like a box -- they are very smooth and bland. It's really too bad as Kimpton hotels frequently have great restaurants (& I used to like the former place.)
After having a previous wonderful dining experience, we were disappointed with brunch. Food was excellent (eggs benedict w/crab; hash; omelet), but cold; our server was earnest in trying to please, but was scattered in a sparsely filled dining room. Pastries on a plate came out with main dishes; had to request butter & jam. The chocolate muffin was decadent!
We went to the hotel restaurant as we were staying there and the online reviews were generally positive. Four of us were the only patrons, at 7PM. The menu was uninspired. The food was mediocre. Hot appetizer was cold. Three of us had steak, ordered medium rare, came very rare and tepid. The mashed potatoes likely came from a box. The fourth person had gnocchi, which was deep fried! All portions were modest in size. xhorWe had three glasses of red wine, which was oxidized. The cost for four was over $200, which was truly exhorbitant for the food quality and preparation. The total meal was one appetizer, four glasses of wine, four entrees, one side.
The food was very good but there was very little of it. I am not a big eater and always take about half of my meal home with me, but I was still hungry after an appetizer and my full meal. The same for everyone at the table. If this restaurant wants to survive and pull in more than the hotel guests staying at the Morrison House, they really need to consider making the portions a little larger. If not, even Restaurant Eve ($$$$) is a better value!
Most of the staff was pleasant but our particular server had an attitude. He questioned my judgement when I requested things be held from my dish which given I was nine months pregnant and didn't want to risk any undercooked items I REALLY didn't appreciate. (The dinner reservations were actually on my due date.) He also blamed the bartender when it took too long to get my husband's wine-- which in my opinion is unprofessional.
The food was ok, not great. The bread was cold and a melon amuse-bouche was served at room temperature rather than chilled. Perhaps this was intentional but it had a negative impact on the dishes. The gnocchi was slightly salty and tasted strongly of mint. Most everything about the experience was mediocre and I will not be returning nor would I recommend.
