Always a good experience at modern cook shop. The corned beef hash was phenomenal, as was the salmon toast. The lemon ricotta pancakes lacked any lemon flavor and the chicken pot pie wasn’t quite was we expected. Overall would recommend, the food is usually phenomenal so this is probably a one off.
Great food, accommodating to families with young children, cool space
We had brunch with our son and his girlfriend. Alecia was excellent, as usual.
Excellent. Loved our waitress. The food is fantastic. Went there twice this past week.
We went during one of their monthly street style Thai food pop up nights! I think it happens the last Monday of each month. The menu was short but plenty to pick from. The food was so flavorful and delicious, we were so full walking out! Definitely would recommend.
Service is inattentive and food is often good.
Food always delicious. They do a fantastic smoked salmon.
The food and atmosphere were amazing, but the server was very awkward, uncomfortable, and did not seem knowledgeable about the menu.
We had the cream of spinach (special), salmon tartine, steak, stuffed eggplant and chickpea fritter. Everything was fantastic (my favorite was the eggplant, and my husband loved the salmon), although the fritter was quite dry and crumbly. I think it could’ve used more yogurt/pomegranate molasses on the side to help it go down. It tasted great, though. We also really liked the ambiance, and look forward to coming back for brunch sometime.
Consistently consistent and delicious food.
Great food, environment , and service! Will def visit again next season with a new menu!
Breakfast is amazing!
Excellent food and good value. It was not at capacity which made it nice to be able to chat comfortably.
Food was great but it took us an hour and a half to get our food.
I tried MCS a few years back when they first opened. There were only a few things on the menu and didn’t leave a lasting impression at the time. So I kind of skipped over it when looking for a place to eat since. But on a whim for a last minute resv close by, we booked. I was so pleasantly surprised! Food was fab! Portions were hearty, which was appreciated. Server was really great as a person and knowledgeable, but they must have been understaffed as it took ages for him to get back around to us at times. (Forgivable, as this happens sometimes. You could tell it was situational, as he was all over the restaurant, but handled it like a champ.) Super loud, so maybe not first choice for intimate date night, but otherwise lively and approachable. Great find! Don’t miss out on this gem!
Service was terrible
The service is always TERRIBLE... if you know that going in... you will be ok!!
The ambience at Modern Cook shop is cool, you walk in through a boutique grocery area and pass a seafood bar (which looked delicious) on your way to your table. We were disappointed that the menu was so different from what was posted online, the menu was much smaller too. I'm not sure if this was because of Restaurant Week or because they rotate their menu seasonally, but we decided to dine at Modern Cook Shop based on the menu online so it would have been nice to have an updated menu on the website (although we may not have decided to come in if that was the case). Regardless, we found items to order and the food was fine. I would go back if someone else invited me, but maybe not on my own accord.
Do not go there on Sunday. The lack of management was apparent. An unprofessional hostess, a waitress that couldn't remember our order, the display prep cook that didn't wash his hands after the restroom. I couldn't wait to leave. I don't recommend going there and won't return.
Always delicious. The seasonal menus offer a good variety of tasty dishes that are great to share & are always changing!
I had high hopes for this place since it was my mom’s birthday and I wanted to try a new cafe. The atmosphere is really calm and neat to look at. The service was ok (not spectacular), but not awful either. They don’t have turkey alternatives for breakfast and the food is boring/ flavorless. I would recommend this place as a quite coffee shop to catch up on work or to read a book, but I don’t think I would revisit for the food. Sorry guys I give is two thumbs down.
Great food!!! I went for a night brunch event and loved how fresh and tasty the food was. The place has an immaculate decor. Very well thought out. Cant wait to go back.
It was amazing experience and our service was awesome!
The food is delicious and aren't common dishes in many restaurants. It's dark, but not necessarily romantic. So great for a date night, but not like a special occasion.
The food was really interesting and exciting. Not the best things I’ve ever eaten, but still delicious! And for a good price. Drinks took forever to arrive but the waiter was nice about it. The atmosphere is a neat little market in front of the restaurant. I will be returning!
You can't go wrong with MCS!
please make more biscuits!!!!
The restaurant itself is very welcoming and the has a very good vibe. Unfortunately, the food and service did not live up to the hype. The food took a very long time to get out to the table and was not very good. We ordered a dish that our server never put into the computer, so it never came out to the table and when we asked about she apologized and said she would have it out to us immediately. Almost 20 minutes later it still hadn't come out to the table. Even the raw oysters were not very good.
The food and service made this place very unappealing and we would not go back.
We love Modern Cook Shop. The brunch menu has a variety of options, everything from healthy options to more indulgent.
Waitress has finally warmed to us. We are frequent diners there and she was not open to special requests like ice for water, extra hot water for coffee. But she is getting more friendly. Food is pricey but good. Don’t go there if you are in a hurry!
Delicious as always!
Great service, great food, great location - what more do you want?
We had a great brunch!
The menu items that we ordered all sounded really great and different. However, most of them needed alot of TLC. The pasta was dry and needed some flavor/seasoning. The duck pierogies were very good except they were dry, the mushrooms and cabbage that came with them needed some moisture or sauce. The special fish (puffer-non-poisonous) appetizer that was recommended to us by our waiter also needed some more flavor and we should have been warned about the bones, as they were small fried almost bite size pieces, but we were taken off guard by the bones. The 1/2 roasted chicken was very dry. The Flatbread was also very good, probably the best we had out of all the items. Shrimp and grits were acceptable, but not quite as good as I have had numerous times in different places.
Overall, with a bit of adjustments I think the menu could be excellent!
I've been here twice in the past two weeks. My new favorite place in Baltimore for lunch or brunch. The acai bowl and avocado toast are absolutely scrumptious - and not to mention, beautifully prepared! And the coffee is great. I will be here a lot in the coming years.
Introduced another family member and fellow foodie to MCS. He enjoyed it as well as we did again. Missed the halibut from last time so actually we all ordered small plates. Had plenty to eat and it was very good. My suggestion would be to offer local tomatoes with the burrata and more bread to go with some of the selections. Our waiter forgot one of the items so he offered to give us a free appetizer next time! Very generous for a minor mistake!
We will be back for sure!
Great place for brunch. Alicia is the best! Definitely recommend.
The service was very slow and the music was very loud. Everything else was fine.
4 of us had dinner at Modern Cook Shop this past weekend, and loved it! It is a very unique atmosphere, which gives you the chance to dine in privacy or with a larger group. The new menu that the new chef created is perfect! Snacks, small plates, entrees to share... or any combination of the above. The choices were all unique, but not so unique that the taste was not the primary focus! Everything was exceptional, and we tried almost everything! Can't wait to go back!
The food was amazing and the staff were all very attentive and professional. I loved the feel too. We had chicken, beets, and scallops, although I think the menu changes frequently.
A great dining space, but the food was sub-par. The building and decor were of-the-moment, with exposed wood and metal, and lots of shelves and dividers. The exterior walls are floor to ceiling windows . Nice space. The food was a major disappointment. Heirloom tomato and burrata salad, so easy to do, was populated with unripe green and red tomatoes, minimal vinaigrette, and a whiff of flavorless chimichurri. The scallops were heavily salted, served in a brine that tasted like fish one day past the sell-by date. The beans served with were under-cooked, flavorless, and somewhat crunchy (not in a good way). I want this place to succeed, but they need a new chef. Sorry.
