Modena presents Italian-inspired cuisine that takes heavy cues from seasonal and regionally sourced ingredients. Modena balances classic cuisine with a modern approach, all enhanced by Chef John Melfi’s passionate and creative touch.

Everyone who visits Modena will want to partake in the platter of antipasti served family-style with three to six selections available daily until they run out. Items will range from chilled Octopus Salad, Artichoke Scafata, Marinated Peppers, and other local seasonal items like fresh beets. One will explore Pasta Fagioli with pipe pasta, local Coco Rubio beans and Piennolo tomatoes, a dish from Melfi’s grandmother’s collection. Our trolley will return in 2021!

For a sweet ending, Amaretti cookies will be offered as they are a mainstay throughout Italy and a wonderful finish to the meal.

We were looking for a nice place to have dinner on our last evening in DC and cannot say we could have found anyplace better than Modena. The food was fabulous, the server was delightful and the food was out of this world! The heirloom tomato salad was absolutely amazing. We were tempted to order a second one! They accommodated us with seating in a smaller room because one of the individuals in our party is hearing impaired and has difficulty in large spaces with a lot of surrounding noise.

We came on early end of the night but were seated 2 ft from expediting area -where wait staff placed trays all evening and conversed loudly back and forth as to which entree went to which table or diner.
Manager was informed but his response was empty apology. No action.

If you’re only in DC for a few days, go somewhere else. As long as your expectations arent extremely high for this place, I think you’ll be fine. There was certainly nothing about our experience that was bad, but our experience was quite underwhelming. The dishes were fine, and had potential if they were edited. Many weren’t executed well. The fancy plating got in the way of practicality. For example, the cod filet itself was tasty but the (firm) smashed peas underneath didn’t have the right texture to complement this fish, which liked to slip around on your plate. The smoked salmon was tasty like how smoked salmon is always tasty but there was too much the cream cheese type filling, which should have been more evenly dispersed. The tortellini dish didn’t taste one bit like it had truffles as described. It sat in a broth that, by itself was tasty, but really didn’t compliment the rest. And finally, the waitstaff who were all very friendly and attentive, were kind of intense in their friendliness and attention. They described every single dish, down to the obvious grilled onions and it was a different person every time. All and all I regret doing the tasting menu and should have ordered a la carte. It was way too expensive of a dinner for the taste. It certainly shouldn’t have the above 4 star rating it does, and in DC no less. I probably wouldn’t give it a second chance.

While visiting DC with our twin 12 year-olds, we wanted a finer dining experience. What we got was a truly enjoyable evening of eating perfectly prepared food, excellently paired with cocktails and wine, while people-watching in the middle of this bustling city. Petra, our fearless guide and host for this evening was very knowledgeable and adventurous with us. She took on the challenge of a family of youngish children dining amongst a primarily adult business population and created a memorable experience. Favorite dishes of the evening were the Sheep's Milk Ricotta Ravioli, the Tortellini in Brodo, and the Tomahawk Pork Chop. At the end of the evening, we ended our meal with a lovely limoncello. Given the opportunity, we would re-visit this restaurant in the future.

Heirloom Beet Salad was great. ‘BARBER II’ WHOLE WHEAT TAGLIATELLE lacked seasoning and flavor. I believe my colleagues like the salmon, soft shell crab special, gnocchi. Petra our server was excellent. Fun, attentive, knowledgeable. Host was also very nice. Nice lunch thank you.

I have been many times to this wonderful restaurant, however this time was different. Everything tasted much better, John Mefi has made the dishes shine, even more, yes that was possible, the gnocchi with black truffles and Buffalo butter, is to die for! My Veal Osso Bucco with the beans and the vibrant tomato jus was rich and flavorful. My guest enjoyed every dish, as well.
I also want to point out the ambiance, the smiles of every person that works in Modena, make you feel confortable and at home. Brian greets you and visits every table with a smile and makes you feel welcomed.
Victor, knowledgeable of all the dishes and reads you so well, that he can suggest what you will enjoy more.
A restaurant that provides this type of food and service, can be stuffy, not MODENA, it's elegant and friendly.

Chris was my first server at modena, and he’s awesome. He’s very affable and always has wonderful menu suggestions. Dan at the bar makes killer cocktails. Modena is a must. Make sure to try the foie gras.

Neither my fiancé nor I ever bother taking the time to write reviews but our experience this past weekend was awful. At close to $290 for a two-tasting and one wine pairing, Modena provided a pathetic experience. The service was bad from the start and only worsened with time. We both had the 5-course tasting menu and my fiancé had the wine pairing along with her dinner – well in theory. To start, our waiter never introduced himself or welcomed us and the experience was a flurry of different waitstaff who all seemed rushed, inexperienced, and some with attitudes. A waitress delivering our first course switched up the plate and wine delivery which we politely corrected – this same waitress came to deliver our dessert along with another, more senior waiter who had to interject correcting her delivery and explanation of the course. After completing our first course and receiving a second wine, there were over 30 minutes before we received the second course. At this time, the table next to us who was also doing a tasting received 2-3 tasting plates in a timely order. The waiter came over and explained there was a "glitch in the matrix", no apologies. The main waiter would disappear and come back wreaking of cigarette smoke to the point that the smell would linger for several minutes afterwards. we commented to the manager that our experience was laagered and he replied if they delivered the plates too close together we wouldn’t be able to enjoy it. We’re not new to tasting menus and wine pairings so we know the quality of service and pace to expect. There was another incident of a busser being loudly scolded by a senior waiter 10 feet from us, we had a hard time hearing each other across the table for point of reference. Frankly, the good food was spoiled by our experience and it did not make up for our time and waste of money at this place.

Modena was phenomenal. Would recommend the Chefs tasting menu with the wine pairing. From the first course to the last it was outstanding.

For the meal:
The first course was something with salmon and roe if I'm being honest this was easily our least favourite of the five courses. There was a cream cheese type sauce that was good, but it was concentrated to one part of the dish and was a bit off for both of us.

Second course: were scallops and dear god were these things out of this world! Sitting here writing this I'm salivating at the thought of them. They were melt in your mouth good. Easily the best scallops I've had in the longest time frankly maybe even ever. It was served with purple potato and mashed peas amazing as well.

Third course: Tortellini with fresh truffles shaved on top with a broth that I swear made me want to drink straight from the bowl. The tortellini was maybe a touch dry, but the broth and truffles made this dish everything just so good!

Fourth course: Lamb chops. They were cooked perfectly and had a phenomenal eggplant purée because frankly it looked a bit like tar, but when I say these two things paired so well together even that would be an understatement.

Then we had a phenomenal raspberry sorbet I know this was supposed to just be to a pallet cleanser but damn this was refreshing and tasty and served on a small bed of dried honey and was perfect and could have easily been the dessert.

Finally, dessert, chocolate chocolate chocolate. This dessert was every chocolate lovers dream. Salty, crunchy and creamy. Couldn't get enough of this. After the dessert came a really nice white port. I'm typically not a fan of ports but this was really good.

Saving the best for last, our server was as high end as they come. Petra, had us laughing and feeling comfortable from our very first interaction. Her quick wit and sense of humour allow her to stand out in all the best ways. She is very much an asset to the restaurant.

Had a fantastic night at Modena. Husband and I got the 7 course tasting menu, and I heartily recommend it - every single dish was beautiful and delicious. Our server Victor gave perfect recommendations, from our bottle of wine to how we should proceed with the dishes. We'll definitely be back.

Overall, the food was good but uneven. The grilled calamari was good but a bit dry. The accompanying sauce (cilantro pesto?) went well with it.
The pasta dish was great, papardelle with pork ragu. My main dish, the osso bucco, which I was really looking forward to, was just OK, very salty and not so tasty. For the dessert we had the blueberry tart. Very good but small, but then again by then I didn't need a large dessert.

The food was fantastic. They had some very creative spins on Italian classics, like their tortellini in brodo, which was in a delicious smoked parmesan dashi. Service was great as well, they were very accommodating of my fiance who is a vegetarian. Would highly recommend!

We arrived to our reservation and everything from the welcome to the end of our dinner was a true delight. Food is beyond amazing! The manager and the receptionist were good. The waiter was terribly sluggish and didn’t appear to know much about the menu. We ordered the chef’s tasting menu. The smoked salmon was not fresh, the cod smelled very fishy, the dashi broth was lukewarm and the tortellini was dry and cold like it had been seating on the counter for a while. The wine glasses were cloudy and chipped. I could go on and on. But I know I will never be back.
