Everyone who visits Modena will want to partake in the platter of antipasti served family-style with three to six selections available daily until they run out. Items will range from chilled Octopus Salad, Artichoke Scafata, Marinated Peppers, and other local seasonal items like fresh beets. One will explore Pasta Fagioli with pipe pasta, local Coco Rubio beans and Piennolo tomatoes, a dish from Melfi’s grandmother’s collection. Our trolley will return in 2021!
For a sweet ending, Amaretti cookies will be offered as they are a mainstay throughout Italy and a wonderful finish to the meal.

This was our third time eating at Modena and we continued to be impressed with the excellent food! The staff was very patient when we arrived late and accomodating of our 3 year old daughter.
Modena never disappoints, in fact it just keeps getting better and better. I have dined here several times, and am always happier than the last time. The octopus, over the romesco with the vinaigrette was almost like butter, so incredibly tender. The artichoke hearts were so creamy on top of a bagna cauda that surpassed anything I’d had in Rome. At Petra’s recommendation we shared a pasta. She said that the gnocchi were like pillows, she was not wrong! We added the perigord truffles, which took the dish to an entirely new level. We then had the pork cheeks which just about melted I’m my mouth, the cheesy polenta was devine. The brodetto was a perfect blend of rockfish, shrimp and calamari, the lobster broth was packed with flavors, perfectly portioned. The chocolate mouse was chocolate on top of chocolate, and then even more chocolate. The Nikki Laude is a truly smoked cocktail and the Hotel Cozumel was refreshing. The entire staff, from start to finish was super friendly and informative. I can’t wait to come back!
The food was good but it was noisy, expensive and felt like the first day they were ever open. The waiter spilled beer on me and barely apologized. There were at least two other spills near our table.
The lunch menu offers great choices and the food was excellent. It is perfect for a lunch meeting.

You cannot go wrong ordering anything from the Modena wonderful menu. What stood out for me was the Polpette and the grilled artichoke hearts. The drinks and the desserts are not to be missed. Wonderful experience overall.

We took our kids down to DC for some sightseeing and decided to take them out for a nice meal. Modena was perfectly located as it is across from the hotel we stayed in. We were warmly greeted and sat immediately. The wait staff was great. Very diligent. The food was all delicious. We left stuffed and happy. Definitely coming back.

Our 4 course anniversary dinner at Modena was perfect. Everything struck the right balance of familiarity and novelty - a perfect place to branch out from the ordinary. Our server, Zach, was knowledgeable and attentive; keeping the meal moving at a leisurely pace. Highly recommend.

Exceptional! Each course was beautifully presented, with fresh ingredients and obviously gifted chef enabled all senses to be pleased. Service was outstanding. Our server, Antonio, made great recommendations to allow us to experience the chef’s creative touches on both dishes new to us (fried artichoke appetizer, for instance) and old favorites like ragu, featuring their handmade pasta. We have found our new favorite DC Italian restaurant. World class.

It is an overall good experience. We tried the “Taste of Italy” tasting menu with the designated wine pairing. The pasta was not “al-dente” and it had a strange spicy after-taste which is not classic to the Italian way of preparing them. Perhaps a twist to the classical. Nonetheless, the lamb loin was the MVP of the night. It was cooked to perfection! The dessert, however, was one that could be easily found in a grocery store. Cheap and tasteless! The price is $105 per person if you would like the wine pairing. It is not worth the price!
Modena never disappoints! It’s hard to pick what is more impressive, the creative & fresh dishes or the outstanding service.

The service and food were outstanding. The wood grilled octopus was unreal, as was the hand-made gluten free oat pappardelle Lamb ragu dish. I would definitely visit again!

My wife and I had our first lunch inside at Modena on a recent, quiet Thursday: it was excellent!
The seating was safely spaced in a formal dining room. Service was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The lunch menu had a wide variety of interesting options and a good selection of wines by the glass.
My fried artichokes were very light, creative, fresh and tasty as was my sea bass in balsamic and pear tart. My wife loved each of her dishes, too.

We came for a celebration with another couple. The restaurant is very noisy. We were left without any wait staff for a long time. The menu is okay not great. I eat everything but my spouse has some dietary restrictions (no pork or seafood). Choices for him very limited. The salad/appetizers were very nice and flavorful. Portions on pastas were absurdly small, dishes flavors were very good but should not be considered a full portion Both men in our party left the restaurant hungry. That should never happen . Noise level so high that when asked if we wanted a 2nd bottle of wine I replied no, twice. But they brought one anyway. We turned it down. I would not rush back to this restaurant. They could do A LOT better with service, menu choices and portions.
Always excellent food with a decidedly modern Italian twist and flavor. I had polpetto to start, gnocchi for a main and bombolini for dessert with ricotta gelato. Service was efficient, friendly and prompt without being rushed. One of my favorites in DC.

It was a 10 people birthday party for my daughter. They did have to wait for 30minutes before being served. I had to call Modena to get my party service. After that, the service was good and the party was having fun. Hope it was just one time incident! KC

Modena offered an outstanding experience in every sense. You are sure not to be disappointed.
All marks were on point: reservation punctually attended, a great table and atmosphere, attentive and prompt service, informed and caring; and truly amazing dishes that created a most memorable occasion. We ordered the burrata as appetizer which was utterly delicious, subtle and complex with a refined touch of explosive flavors as pomegranate fresh seeds, greens and delicately crafted focaccia are combined with the fresh and aged cheeses; we declined the entrees but opted for the pasta as main course instead. The delicate squash and ricotta filled raviolis were a really elevated version of a delicacy with a truly accomplished blend of ingredients and the right balance of flavors, texture with the brûlée torched caramelized crust and toasted squash seeds added a nice crunchy touch to the dish. By suggestion of our attentive waiter we paired our food with a bottle of exquisite Oregon Pinot Noir -single vine- which was perfect and well balanced. We appreciated very much our server suggestions!
As dessert, we had the pear tart which was the perfect closing choice for a delightful evening. You can really be witness to the evolution of a simple trattoria into the most accomplished elevated restaurant that Modena has become today. If you love creative and authentic Italian flavors with a most attentive service and attention to detail, Modena is a sure choice for fulfilling your expectations.
That last sentence is exactly what we are looking to provide! I'm glad we hit the mark for you.
A celebration dinner offered an opportunity to check in on the evolution of Modena. What we discovered was cooking of a very high order – the equal of other pricier Italian fine dining establishments – inventive but with a solid grounding in Italian flavors and technique. As often happens nowadays, the food tastes better than its menu descriptions which always baffle as to how it will all work. We shared four antipasti to start and each was a revelation. Carciofi fritti – almost pudding-like interiors with a crispy exterior with a bagna cauda that could have to tweaked to be a bit more piquant. Perfect octopus and squid dishes, paired surprisingly with sausage and salumi, each napped with a different spicy sauce. And a crudo of wonderfully fatty salmon, piqued with salt and lemon, that would shame a sushi restaurant. These were followed by light pillowy gnocchi with wild mushrooms lightly sauce with cheese and maybe a bit of butter and pasta water to which we added the supplemental black truffle shavings. This is a dish worth returning for. Finally, a newly introduced dish of large portion of very meaty, spiced duck breast in a sort of agrodolce cider gastrique with fall vegetables and an extraordinary dish of melting pork cheeks over a lovely locally sourced artisanal polenta topped with better chicharrons than one would find at many Mexican places. We brought our own wine which was very professionally handled by the manager, Dan. All of this combined with professional and attentive (but not obtrusive) service by Chris and other staff made for a memorable event and left us wondering when the next dinner here will be.
