Food and service were terrific. Portion sizes were perfect.
The left-side room is quite "bright" and so fairly noisy... but fun people-watching. (the chairs are actually just right, and no one was seated cheek-and-jowl close). The service and wine suggestions were competent.
Food: The Burrata salad was excellent... , lush burrata on crispy tiny greens and shaved fresh hearts of palm with pomegranate seeds and small sweet squares of persimmon to cut through the cheese.
The Rigatoni (Amatriciana) was al dente, the sweetness of the tomatoes were a bit lost in a quite salty sauce -- I blame the guanciale.
The duck breast was HUGE! seared, but quite rare (no medium there) ... really needed the serrated knife to cut it. The sweetness of the pomegranate/cider reduction balanced the duck nicely.
The poached pear tart was a nice book-end to the creamy burrata and a good cup of coffee (press) was just right.
Wine: Vermentino was a long-forgotten old friend and the Sangiovese blend was just light enough to balance the duck.
Was it worth $250.00?... in today's market, YES. ... was it Saturday night of restaurant Week?.. YES. Was it gracious?.. Sort of.. we will go back on a less popular evening.
Fantastic experience. The whole staff did a great job and the food was wonderful. We will be back.
Even better than expected. Excellent service, every dish was spot-on.
Loved it. Hadn't been in DC to eat in two years but am happy I went in tonight. Sat at the bar and had some delicious drinks made to complement the price fixe meal. Had roasted octopus to start followed by gnocchi. Main course was Branzino and gave into the tiramisu for dessert. Was a great choice.
Amazing food…great service. We loved our waitress, Sommelier could have been a little better. But really great evening
Very pleased with food and service. Highly recommend.
Food, drinks, service, and ambiance were all amazing. Highly recommend.
The food and service have been uniformly outstanding at all of our meals there.
Great food and superior service at a very fair price.
great food/experience for Restaurant Week! a worthy splurge
Lovely experience dining at Modena for restaurant week! Was with a small group of friends and we did the 3-course menu. Everyone enjoyed their dishes; the heirloom beet salad was something I could eat every day - super-fresh and delicious. Tagliatelle was very good, but could've been hotter. We enjoyed chatting with our server about both food and wine. Very pretty dining room and cozy at the same time. Look forward to returning to try what's on the regular menu.
Excellent food, excellent service! Food well presented.
Excellent dinner during Restaurant Week. Great selections in each course. Service was helpful and professional
This is my favorite restaurant in DC, and I want to explain why, with enough detail to be helpful to others who are looking for new places to eat. First of all: the food is exceptional. A lot of Prix Fixe places want you to spend 200 bucks walking in the door - Modena lets you order one or a few of the amazing things they have on the menu, or go Prix Fixe, and the chef's menu changes often.
The next thing I love is the amazing craft cocktails. This place is small compared to some other DC restaurant, but their lead bartender Dan is an innovator. He's always inventing new cocktails, and the go-to drinks on their menu are excellent.
Finally - they take great care of their staff, so the staff sticks around. Our favorite waiter, Vic, has been there since shortly after opening, and knows what we want without us having to ask.
Modena is great food, amazing drinks, and top-notch service. Give them a try!
We did the Italian Experience. Food was good quality but seemed a quite over priced for the dishes we were served. Added wine selection at $45 per guest and expected to at least get 1 red wine at a With our Italian Experience. Whites and Rose. Quite a let down.
Muy buena la comida y excelente atención. La parte externa es un poco improvisada sin ningún atractivo. En general muy bueno.
New year’s eve
I visited for the NYE dinner. Every dish we ordered were great! I would give them extra stars for the services if I can! All of them were very kind and accommodating. I’m definitely going back for upcoming special occasions!
Wonderful food, cocktails and ambiance. The menu was innovative but also offered comfort food items.
We went here to celebrate a birthday because it had outdoor seating available on short notice while other restaurants closed down. The food and service were superlative. I requested an off the menu pomodoro with vegetables because I didn't care for the other vegetarian options, and it was wonderful. One of my companions ordered the truffle gnocchi and it was one of the best things I've ever tasted.
I had always thought of this place as a business lunch fixture, but I'll definitely come back here for regular social occasions. The outdoor seating is a an ordinary plastic tent, but they kept it warm with heaters and had soft lighting for ambiance.
We enjoyed our dinner and the staff were very accommodating.
We had the most wonderful dinner. The food was excellent, the pasta home made, the portions perfect. Our server Petra was fantastic; knowledgeable, fun and friendly.
The restaurant design was such that the noise level was minimal with many soft surfaces absorbing the sound.
The wine list is very good.
Highly recommend for special celebration or a romantic dinner.
Excellent meal. We splurged for the feast of seven fishes 8-course meal with wine pairings. Everything was outstanding, including the service.
We enjoyed hosting everyone for our Seven Fishes meal, and are happy to hear that you enjoyed it as well.
Modena was a very enjoyable evening with excellent service and good food.
First courses were very good.
Monkfish was very tasty
Ribeye was ok
Wine choices were duperb
We will be back location is convenient and valet parking worked well
Thank you. We hope to see you again.
Went to Modena for Christmas Eve dinner and had the 3 course option.
We had several options for each meal, all very delicious. The server was even knowledgeable on GF options.
Everything tasted very good. We had the heirloom beet salad, arugula salad & grilled calamri as appetizers, the braised short rib (the best of all), the ribeye & GF tagliatelle.
Fantastic food, service and ambiance!
Thanks for the feedback. I will pass along your compliments to our team.
Modena just did it again: memorable evening thanks to incredible food! We will be back asap. Still number one in DC for ( affordable ) Italian food!!
We hope to see you again!
Food is carefully prepared, and nicely served, but not outstanding in taste. Given the high price point, it was not worth it for us. Only one item out of a dozen stood out: the fried artichoke appetizer.
We are happy to hear that you liked the crispy fried artichokes and disappointed that the rest of the meal didn't hit that same standard. We always like to hear how we could have done better.
Very good selection of Italian dishes. I highly recommend the beet salad and the in-house gelatos and sorbets. The seafood stew was good — large prawns and excellent white fish. The broth was over salty for my taste. Service very good.
Chef uses local ingredients to make the gelatos and sorbets daily. It's great to hear that you enjoyed them!
Best Polpette I have ever had. Best lasagna I have ever had.
The food and service was fantastic. Definitely recommend to others!
Fantastic food and excellent cocktails. One of the best Italian restaurants in my experience.
We were stated outside, but it was well heated and comfortable.
Service was excellent.
Will come back.
We are thrilled to hear you had a good time. Thanks!
Excellent food…the fried artichoke starter is amazing, efficient and friendly service. A lovely evening out.
We are happy to welcome you any time.
We were celebrating our engagement and my fiancés birthday, truly couldn’t have picked a better location. The food, ambiance and staff were all superb. 10/10 highly recommend.
Congratulations again, and thank you for the kind words.
Great dining experience. Excellent food and service
We hope to see you again soon.
Broke in a new waiter. That should not be the responsibility of customers. 1st visit there was great...not so much the 2nd time
We are happy you enjoyed the food, and are very sorry that your experience with us this time was lacking.
We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Modena on December 15, 2021. We had the beet salad and the arugula salad, and then duck breast and tortellini in brodo. Everything was delicious. Our server, Antonio, was professional and attentive without being intrusive. A very nice evening.
Thank you! We will pass your compliments along to Antonio.
We went out to celebrate a friends graduation. We ordered multiple items and the review is:
Outstanding desserts as well.
Had always heard of their desserts being amazing so no complaints there. Will probably be visiting again just for their desserts. Overall the food was not worth the price. Except the desserts which were beyond amazing.
The service was slow but in their defense they were really busy. Great ambience.
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the dessert, and are very sorry the rest of the experience did not stand up to that standard. We would love to have you back. Best, Dan Landau-Smith General Manager
Tasting menu- mediocre. Server tried, appeared to not really know the menu. Somm was very engaging, some wine pairings questionable. Might go back for drinks but wouldn’t put on the top of my list.
