“This hidden gem, nestled along the tracks with a pretty flower-laden courtyard for dining, is one to put on regular rotation. Modern and chic, the dining room, with its rotating art selections, dark wood seating and black leather half-banquettes that sit below an inset circular ceiling, is a great place for power lunches and weekend dates. The lounge, which is separated from the dining room by a state of the art glass wine room, is perfect for grabbing quick bites and craft cocktails. As for the food, it's hard to lose. Among starters, the crab cakes and margherita flatbread are rivaled by a French onion soup that's better than what you find at most French bistros. An absolute must to follow is the cedar plank salmon, cloaked in a teriyaki glaze and served with grilled asparagus and shoestring potatoes. The steaks, ribs and bourbon-glazed pork chop are no slouches either, especially when paired with a glass of wine from the extensive but approachable wine list.”

MLG Ratings and Reviews
I would not recommend this place for anyone who is gluten free and has celiac disease! When I asked about items on the menu that were gluten free, the server told me there were only two things. I asked to speak to the chef and he did come out and talk with me. I tried one of the other items on the menu because the chef assured me he would take extra care with my entree. Unfortunately, I don't think he understood my explanation of what gluten free means. I have been sick for two days and will never eat there again. So, BEWARE celiac disease people!!!
I was pleasantly surprised. I have thought about trying this place for a while . The reviews I read were less then stellar . The ambience is great , very high end look . There was no one present when I walked in . I did wait a couple minutes to be seated ,. Service could have been more attentive. The lunch crowd was not busy but I did see people seated in meeting space as well. I enjoyed the chips that were served rather then bread . We all enjoyed our entrees burgers , grouper etc... . I am planning on returning for dinner .
this restaurant as always was very good. we had the fish and brick chicken which was prepared very nicely. we use a 2 for 1 special deal which helped defray he cost. we have been there quite a few times and will go back for sure. it is also in a good location for us since we lie in highland park close to lake forest. the only thing negative was that we were seated close to some people who were very loud and drinking tooo much, but thtat is not the fauld to of the restaurant. i also really liked when you had the black female vocalist on the weekends what happened to her?
We keep returning to this restaurant, hoping its menu will improve, but we continue to be disappointed. All the wait staff are super friendly and the wine list is certainly impressive, but the food offered shows little creativity in either type or method of preparation. Prices are expensive for what is relatively mediocre cuisine.
We went with friends for dinner on a Tuesday night hoping for a quieter night, but this restaurant has a very loyal and animated following. We were able to move a corner table and that helped a great deal. The food was very good and all of us were most pleased. I had the shrimp and scallop risotto, a favorite of mine and my wife enjoyed her branzino.
Having moved from the city, I was excited to dine at MLG. Really a disappointing dinner. I must say the decor is pretty but being greeted by someone in jeans and tennis shoes with "HI"...was not what I was expecting.... ...the steaks were awful and the huge scoop of soggy vegetables on the plate left a lot to be desired. Their signature Bloody Mary had soggy shrimp and crab (it appeared to be frozen shrimp and crabmeat.)..... the server was nice but again not for the supposed caliber of this restaurant. I'm still trying to figure out what type of restaurant this is...so after $200.00.....I'm not going back.
Horrible experience. 80 minutes wait for fried chicken. They ran out, cut pieces in half and tried to pass it off as a full dinner. Deceitful. Server was apologetic, manager disappeared. Potatoes were dry and tasteless. Cornbread was crumbly and dry. Would not go back on a Wednesday night for the special.
It was a beautiful 75 degree day on Monday October 2. I took my parents to MLG Because of the fabulous outdoor patio. We got a table outside but the sun was beaming down and Making it uncomfortable for my parents. We asked for an umbrella but there were only three available and at that time all were being used. Unfortunately we had to take our lunch inside the restaurant. The ambience indoors is lovely put on a gorgeous day it would’ve been much nicer to sit outside. There was barely anyone in the restaurant dining. Our table of three ordered a cold tuna appetizer, the quinoa bowl and one burger. It took at least 30 minutes to fulfill the small order. The food was fine, we just couldn’t believe how long it took with only one cooked entrée and barely anybody else in the restaurant to serve. We did not have time to stay for any dessert because we had to get home to pick up at school. It was a little bit disappointing. I really wanted to like the restaurant more but will most likely not return.
I expected class and found it but there were a couple of problems, possibly due to a new chef. First of all, for three of us all having fish, a more than half-hour wait for our food was unacceptable. And then to have the fish arrive dry...and my baked potato cold...disappointing.
The manager went out of his way to accommodate us and chopped the bill in half, apologizing profusely, and we will go back but, just a heads up...ask in advance if the chef is a newbie.
we went down to MLG on a Sat evening to celebrate a milestone birthday, and Josh (Manager) and team were OUTSTANDING. The food and service was exceptional, and Josh stopped by our table multiple times to check in on us and offered spot on recommendations, ensuring that our celebration was perfect. It really does come down to great service at the end of the day when it comes to a special restaurant experience, and this gentleman delivered...
We had steak skewers ($14) as our appetizer, which were pretty good. However the grilled calamari ($12) stole the show there. Perfectly charred and full of flavor, especially with a squirt of grilled lemon and giardanara peppers that accompanied it.
We ordered a bottle of Pape Clement (2000 Vintage) Bordeaux for the special occasion, and it was relatively reasonably priced (for the wine that it is) with a modest markup over a wine shop's price for that bottle.
The entrees we ordered were the Swordfish steak (special of the day, Lobster Pasta, and Cheese ravioli with meat ragu (special of the day). All 3 entrees turned out to be intensely flavored and excellent.
For dessert, our server Aubrey brought out Chocolate cake for the birthday celebration (compliments of the house), and it was rich and decadent. We order some decaf coffee on the side which went well with it.
All in all, it was a great celebration experience at MLG made Extra Special by Josh and his serving staff.
The measure of good service is sometimes when things don't go as plan. The expeditor began to bring our entrees out while we were still completing an earlier course. When the entrees returned, my wife's entrée had a hot plate but tepid meat, potatoes, and vegetable. Jessica, our waitress, and Josh, the manager, remedied this with a freshly cooked entrée very quickly. Jessica faced the issue head on and provided a solution rather than excuses. We will go back.
This is a very good restaurant. Their menu offers a decent variety of items that should satisfy most and the food is very good.
If you like bread at the table before your meal, you won't get that here. I'm not a fan of the mixed basket of potato and sweet potato chips. Very few people I've dined with even touch the sweet potato chips and the portion of regular potato chips is quite small. The chips are sometimes soggy - no crunch. Frankly, I'd rather MLG gave you the choice of bread or chips, or simply dropped the chips.
There are enough decent wines available to satisfy most.
Service is very good. Ambiance also. Outdoor seating is available, but given it's on Western, with commuter trains pulling into and out of the Lake Forest Metra station across the street, the noise can be unpleasant.
We were hoping to sit outside but it just started to rain. The staff (especially Joshua) were extremely friendly, service-oriented and professional in quickly adding additional seating in the back of the restaurant to accommodate the influx of customers that couldn't sit outside. The service from all wait-staff was excellent. This was my 4th occasion to be at MLG. Love the outdoor seating - the big chairs around the fire-pits are great for a late-night cocktail.
