Mitchell's Fish Market - Galleria - Pittsburgh Ratings and Reviews
I'm so glad Mitchell's participated in restaurant week. I'd never been to either location and we didn't know the location closer to us existed until Bryan noticed them on restaurant week.
The food was AMAZING. Bryan warned me to save room for the shark fin pie, thankfully. I don't eat dessert at restaurants often, but the shark fin pie is worth it!
I tried the gumbo and tuna bowl, which were both good. I loved my jambalaya and the asparagus took a while to get used to (a bit softer than I prefer), but it was good. The shark fin pie was beyond amazing, but I'd recommend getting the SMALLER portion unless you have a table of 4 or more. Splitting the big one with two people was too much. Delicious, but too much - even when I saved half my jambalaya for lunch.
The service was wonderful. Our waitress, Lisa, was so fast & stealthy that I didn't always realize she'd filled my water until I'd look down and see that it was full. The manager was also very friendly.
We'll definitely be repeat customers and look forward to many more delicious meals at Mitchell's. I wanted to try almost everything on the menu, so I'm sure I'll eat there many times before repeating a dish (other than getting the mini shark fin pie to share).
(I didn't feel like editing my photos, but you can see them in my reviews on Yelp, Facebook, etc.)
Even tough I had a reservation the only table they had was by the entrance in the bar. We eat here regularly and usually the service is predictably good. Took an hour to get bread for the table and only received it after freaking eight the manager. Our server was non existent after he took ur order. When he did stop and check in with us he constantly apologized telling us he had a table of 10 that was taking up all his time.
Our food was average in quality, but was priced reasonably. The spinach salad was by far the best part of the meal. The cod stuffed with lobster and shrimp was served lukewarm and was dry, even with the garlic wine sauce. The serving of smashed potatoes was huge but they were very heavy and also dry. Our waiter was attentive but seemed to have a hearing problem, or perhaps it was a listening problem. My husband asked for a Bud lite and he responded with "how would you like your Manhattan?" My friend ordered lobster bisque and scallops and he asked her if she would like soup or salad with that. At the end he asked how would we like to divide the check and we told him my husband and I would be on one check and the other couple would be separate. He brought one check and so we ended up splitting the cost.
The restaurant is popular and packed - the tables are very close together and everyone can hear each other's conversations. I would call this a "utility restaurant," definitely not a destination.
The restaurant is usually one of our favorites. The food was fantastic as usual, but being sat in the corner bar booth on NYE was a bit disruptive. Our server was pleasant but he was very overwhelmed. We could see him standing at the bar when we needed drinks, we're waiting on water refills, waiting on our check, it was very disappointing.
Seated immediately (with a reservation) on New Year's Eve which was great. A little noisey but that was primarily due to an adjacent large group in a smaller room. Service was attentive. I ordered the Sam Adams Beer Battered Fisherman's Platter which is always quite tasty with more food than I can eat.
This normally excellent restaurant was completely unprepared for being open on the holiday. First, the staff was clearly under trained probably because they were all recent hires for the holiday opening (the young lady that seated us had to ask a fellow worker about table numbers, the waitress that waited on us didn’t bring a lobster shell cracker or knew what it was when she brought the lobster, etc). The water glasses sat empty for 10 minutes while wait staff walked by our table at least 8-10 times.
Second, the kitchen had a bad day: the side dish of potatoes and asparagus was delivered COLD (not slightly below target temp - it was cold!). The shell cracker broke the first time I tried to use it ( undercooked the lobster). Heard the couple next to us say to the waitress that they had waited over half an hour since their salad for their meal (restaurant was less than half full!).
Finally, the manager delivered the now reheated side dish, without even an apology - he seemed to be just as green as his staff, not really taking charge of kitchen and service issues OR making sure the customers got what they were expecting.
The real disappointment is that this normally one of our favorite go-to places. We expected a great meal on a day that we just didn’t want to do the work. Disappointing
We usually have our gatherings here at least once a year. The food, drinks and service are normally good to great. But this time we were disappointed. They set us across from the kitchen area where the staff hung out and were chatting a lot. They were also preparing to have the staff party in the private room next to where we sat. They left the blinds open for a while so we got to watch them shove food in their mouths. (Kind of unprofessional)
Our drinks and appetizers took a while to come out. Then the dirty gin martini my friend ordered tasted and smelled like fruit loops. We brought that up to our waiter but all he offered was an "oh" and brushed us off. He was not the most attentive waiter that we've had...seemed a bit clueless as to how to do his job as a waiter. So, not sure if I would continue coming to Mitchell's. Might have to find another place for our gatherings.
I requested a booth on my Open Table reservation and the last booth available was given to the couple in front of us. As a Landry’s member we should receive preferential seating. The hostess gave 1 menu for 3 people to share. Our very nice waiter, Christian, got us 2 more menus. There was a long hair on my plate, not my hair color. It was not touching the food so I removed it .
For Thanksgiving, this was very good. I can only speak to the traditional Thanksgiving meal: the turkey was moist and ample; the smashed potatoes were very good (even without gravy); the dressing and cranberry sauce were excellent! However, the pumpkin pie left a lot to be desired---so much cinnamon that I could not get any pumpkin taste whatsoever.
I finished with a very good cup of coffee, and the service was spot on.
We always enjoy Mitchell's. The food is excellent, and they are very good about handling my son's severe nut allergy. We also had my elderly mother in law, in a wheelchair, and they had the table ready with plenty of room to maneuver her chair into place. It was a great outing!
We have been to mitchels several times and this was the worst experience we have ever had. The wait to have our orders taken was entirely too long. The tables were so close together that several times servers bumped into our chairs and had to hold their trays over our heads just to get by. My wife’s salmon was not even cooked so we asked politely to send I️t back. When the manager came back with the food he was extremely rude and didn’t even bother to apologize. They also took her fork away and didn’t bother to bring one back and we had to wait another ten minutes before anyone bothered to come around to ask for one. By this point her food was cold again. We were extremely disappointed by their lack of concern for the mistakes they were making. I️ can’t in good conscience recommend them to anyone after this experience.
We have been here at the bar for dinner many times in the past. This is a first time in the dining room for a busy dinner hour. Seated promptly for our reservation. Waited a long time for server. Waitress stopped by to introduce herself and then started to leave without taking our drink order. She finally returned with the wrong bottle of wine. After a wait, came back with the right wine but did not know how to use a cork screw. ( I opened our wine after watching her struggle.) Took our food order and did not return for 30 minutes. The table next to us was seated, served and was leaving before our cold dinners arrived. The manager stopped by to comp our meal and desert. He seemed to be doing that allot. The server came by with the check and charged for the desert. Could be an off night, or Mitchell's could consider better training for new managers/wait staff.
