The Mistley Thorn offers high quality food, served in a casual environment with an emphasis on freshness and locally sourced produce. Fish and shellfish feature in abundance on the menu alongside daily changing specials. It is the first eating establishment in Essex to be awarded the Michelin guide's prestigious Bib Gourmand, which identifies restaurants that provide good food at reasonable prices. Recently the Thorn were awarded a second rosette in the AA guide. The Mistley Thorn is located in the historic village of Mistley, conveniently located a minutes walk from the train station, which has direct services to Colchester, Harwich and London Liverpool Street. The hotel and restaurant were completely refurbished and opened in 2004 by proprietors Sherri Singleton and David McKay. The accommodation consists of five well appointed rooms, some with panoramic views of the Stour Estuary.

There is a small residential car park for hotel guests. Restaurant guests will find ample parking in front of and around the hotel.
Public transit
We are located just a minutes walk away from Mistley train station, which has direct links to Colchester, Harwich and London Liverpool Street. Maningtree station is a 5 minute taxi journey away. A local bus route runs through Mistley with a stop outside the front of the hotel.

We recently enjoyed Sunday lunch at The Thorn with friends. It was not our first visit and we were not disappointed against our expectations. Service was very attentive and our menu selections were well prepared and presented. Seating was a bit congested and the restaurant was quite busy but overall this did not present any problem. We will visit again!

Had a very pleasant lunch with an old fried at thee Mistley Thorn. We both had excellent Shellfish and Fish starters and mains which were beyond reproach. I also pushed the boat out and on my waitresses recommendation had a divine cheesecake with Toffee Sauce. I rarely go for cheesecake but on this occasion, the recommendation was spot on.

Not my first visit and will not be my last. Excellent service, good food and the lunchtime set menu is exceptional value for money.

this was excellent food, we all ate fish and couldn't fault it. good portions well cooked. good service, very friendly.

The food in the resturuant was excellent all four diners had fresh fish which was well cooked and fresh, which at times in even bigger establishments is not so. Would recommend. Get window table if possible

The Mistley Thorn is my favourite place to eat - whether it be with family, including kids or with a group of friends. We get consistently great food, fab service and the most lovely ambience.

Really disappointed - we've been several times over the years and while the food was reliably good, if not exciting, the service was terrible, many dishes on the menu were not available, staff were shouting at the back of the restaurant and spilled out into the middle of it, ignoring the customers (i.e. us), and we were basically hustled out of the restaurant at 9.45 pm. On Valentine's Day! Not very classy. Shan't be going again.

This was supposed to be a Valentine's Day treat. The restaurant is 45 minutes by car from our home so we had made a special effort to go there. We were taken to a table in a room at the back of the restaurant. The ambience, decor and appearance of the room were of a markedly inferior quality to the main restaurant. We chose the set menu as it appeared to offer good value but no fish was offered for the main course despite the fact that fish is the chief speciality of this restaurant. The starters and desserts were acceptable but for the main course we both ordered the roast beef. The beef was rough in appearance and contained quite a lot of gristle and fat. The roast potatoes were tough and had been reheated, which adversely affected the taste. The Yorkshire puddings tasted cardboardy and were of inferior quality. The waitress was very nice and service was prompt and friendly but all in all this was a disappointing Valentine's Day experience.
