About this restaurant

  • Great for brunch
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
Mimi’s Bakehouse is a second-generation family business established in Edinburgh in 2010, when Michelle Phillips sold her family home to open a bakery café in Leith. We have gone on to build a local success story brand that gives people a ‘hug when they walk in the door’ as the original café has since doubled in size and the business has gained five more shops, a successful website selling cakes online and a concession at Archerfield Walled Garden. We also opened an industrial bakery in March 2020, out of which most online trade is produced for fulfilment. Mimi’s Bakehouse has become one of Edinburgh’s best-loved bakeries and an award-winning brand which is a well-known “feel good” place to visit, while remaining small enough to go the extra mile and try new things.
We serve brunch, afternoon tea, coffee and cake.

Mimi's has always been one of my favourite places to eat, so our visit this morning was a bit disappointing. The staff were lovely and friendly, but the service wasn't good. My sister ordered extra hash browns which didn't arrive with her meal. She reminded the waiter, and they still didn't arrive. She had to go up to the counter to ask for the hash browns and for ketchup. No one checked if we needed anything else during the meal, and we weren't offered or brought water at any point. We asked for the bill, tried to catch someone's eye for payment, and again had to go to the counter to pay. Staff were apologetic, but it really was quite poor service! Despite the restaurant being about half the size it was during my last visit, the waiting staff seemed overwhelmed. The food was quite good, but the overall experience was disappointing.

Service was excellent. Food we had was tasty. But some dishes should never be change to much from the original. Take the Ultimate Eggs Benedict. A step too far in my opinion. I would lose the black pudding and potato scone, by all means offer as alternatives along with bacon to the original Benedict recipe. There are enough carbs with crumpet without a scone on top. Not enough sauce! 2 very small teaspoons of Hollandaise on top. Do not an Eggs Benedict make. It’s supposed to be a sauce over the dish. While it was okay and tasty enough. Far too much on plate and no options for a normal size portion without the extras. Or make your own breakfast with choice off eggs scrambled or poached etc. I see you are trying but maybe too much in lieu of original recipes.

The food was fine but just felt the place was lacking. Felt grubby. Not a special experience. Cleaning buckets and mops propped up beside the desk at front and in toilet. Bins overflowing. Needs a refresh.

I had the Soup and Sandwich combo of Minestrone & Ploughman sandwich on lovely homemade bread. Both were excellent. Finished up with a Red Velvet Cupcake which was fab.

Great cakes and good value for money. Service could have been quicker. We waited 30mins for our cakes and coffee, granted it was busy, although staff could have been more attentive.

We booked in for coffee and cake for mother’s day. We usually go to Mimi’s for family celebrations and were looking forward to it. Unfortunately, the service on this occasion was not good. Our coffees took a while to arrive, we had to ask for table water twice before it arrived and only 4 out of 5 cakes we ordered made it to the table. When we enquired about the missing cake, the server seemed confused before advising they had run out. The three slices of carrot cake we did receive were extremely dry - clearly the last 3 pieces of a whole. This was disappointing but the general cleanliness of the place was the biggest let down. The toilet/baby change was dirty and the chef passed through the dining area with bagged rubbish and food waste while we ate. Nobody visited our table unless we motioned them over and it felt very chaotic overall. We all left with headaches! So disappointing.

This is the first time I’ve been back to the Leith shop in a while and I have to say that will be my last. I don’t think the set up of the shop is a good plan - the seating lay out makes it feel cramped and the overall look of the place feels dirty. We ordered our usual order and the quality has went downhill. I ordered a cheese ploughman sandwich - the roll was stale, one slice of cheese and a little dollop of pickle. Did not warrant £11.00. My husband got the French toast which wasn’t much better the overall taste was pretty bland and the bacon was overcooked and fatty! The service wasn’t much better simple things like bringing cutlery over when the meal was served, had to chase several times. No one asked if we enjoyed our meal. Overall it felt like it is trying to cut costs. Definitely not value for money! Such a shame as we’ve been coming since you opened.

I've been to Mimi's dozens of times before but this was my first visit since the cafe size was reduced, along with the menu. I had my usual French toast, which has always been a Mimi's speciality, but was hugely disappointed to discover that it's now made with brioche rather than proper bread, which means it's sweet rather than the savoury lunch I was looking forward to. I sincerely hope this isn't a permanent change - if it is then I think I'll be looking for an alternative for lunch with friends in future.
