   I have reviewed before, but this was one of the best meals I have had so far. Edamame, agedashi tofu, marinated salmon sashimi and orange slices, tai sashimi with vegetables wrapped in tofu, lotus root 'tsukune', vegetable tempura, "Perfect Fantsy" roll, spicy tuna sushi roll, Asahi draft beer, and cheese cake and green tea to finish. Oishikatta!

   We ordered a mix of items from the menu and from the specials boards (seasonal items). It was all good, as usual. My friends loved the egg custard tofu, the sashimi, the lotus root "tsukune" and the agedashi tofu, as well as the sushi roll and the eda mame . Superior food, far outdistances other Japanese cooking on the UWS. But don't go for the atmosphere: very simple, and seldom crowded at all. For people who are interested primarily in food, not "the vibe" (of which there is little).

   I ate dinner recently at Mimi with a group of friends. We ordered a number of dishes beforehand, so our food was not directly off the menu, but I have been there a number of times, and our meal was quite consistent with my other experiences. Mimi is 'short' on both atmosphere, and the kind of sophistication that characterizes many New York restaurants. Eating at Mimi is more like eating in a small restaurant in Tokyo, or Nagoya, where neither atmosphere nor the service is sophisticated - but where the food is good. I am a fan of Japanese food, and I lived in Japan for four years in the 1980s. I have found it hard to get good Japanese food here, beyond the top-level restaurants of midtown. Quite a few places I have tried on the Upper West Side are not even really Japanese, but rather "pan-Asian". I notice the difference. I find the food at Mimi authentic, and well prepared. The vegetable tempura, for example, is prepared with a light batter. Dishes like bamboo shoots, katsuo tataki, egglplant dengaku, agedashi tofu, chawanmushi, etc., are all authentic and very tasty. Not a destination restaurant, not a romantic date place, Mimi is an excellent restaurant to have in the neighborhood when you are interested in having some real Japanese food.

   Mimi was odd in that there was no one in this restaurant, and no orders went out the whole time we were there. This made us nervous, but the sushi was pretty good. Not sure how long it's going to be there. There's virtually no ambiance. Nothing on the walls. Wooden tables. Boring. Won't likely be back.

   The fish was not fresh and the rolls had no flavor. The tuna was stringy and watery. The waiter agreed with us and told us that the fish came in yesterday and was not fresh when delivered. The place was empty and each order got mixed up. It was also very expensive and small portions. Despite all of the errors we were fully charged and not offered any compensation. Stay away and avoid this restaurant at all costs.
