Bang Up To The Elephant!
Land-locked Denver islanders can find escape with freshly cracked coconut cocktails and festive beach-shack foods ...all within a tropical postcard moment. The unusual setting reflects the different approaches found in the restaurant’s scratch-made offerings; vegetarians, omnivores, vegans, and fruitarians will feel equally delighted by the unexpected and island-inspired options. It’s as if the entire restaurant just landed from an unknown alternate-dimension, bringing technicolor palm-trees swinging to crooning bird-song.

I love this place!!! The decor is stunning and helped stave off how dreary it was outside. Service was fantastic. And the food is so flavorful!!! You’ve got to try the savory donuts. I could eat them every day. My new go to spot when I want great vegetarian food and an awesome spot to get some work done.
Drinks were tasty and food was just okay! The layout is very cool though and good for large groups. The service was very very kind and attentive!
Excellent food and a fun restaurant! Don’t be thrown off by the decor—it’s not as kitschy as you might think at a glance, and the atmosphere, music and crowd come together for an enjoyable experience.
Excellent restaurant in Capitol Hill. The drinks specials are well worth the truly special price and the food was terrific. The atmosphere was relaxed, wait staff excellent and décor perfectly fit the restaurant theme. Will definitely return and recommend to others.
Food menu was confusing. Chicken wings not edible. Other items were good. Nice atmosphere.
Blah over complicated food with too much confusion.
Hindu, Jamaica, Asia, bloody Atlantis for all I care. Pretentious is not clever enough a word to describe this wanna be stylish hipster feed hole that whored me to the snore. Ignore it.
Celebrated our 3 year anniversary with some yummy drinks thanks to Jon our waiter who was super friendly and helpful! We will be returning :)
Having been to every country in the Caribbean, I was skeptical about someone trying to bring this type of cuisine to Denver. I was wrong. The food here is excellent, the flavors of the islands but with a bit of a modern/creative twist. Service provided by John was superb. Space is soaring and has a great vibe. We will be back.
Seriously so good! This is a must try! Do not let the exotic menu items scare you away. Happy hour has wonderful options for both drink and food. We tried the pork cubano, jerk chicken, and the chowmein bowl with an appetizer of plantain chips. Very good-- would highly recommend.
Made a reservation for 15 people and they were happy to accommodate. The server handled all our bills separately, which was very helpful. The ambiance, music and food was great. It was all our first times there s d we can’t wait to go back!
Great atmosphere but disappointing food. Great for cocktails and apps though!
What a fun place to spend time. The decor is funky and interesting, a combination of plants and modern design makes you feel like you're inside the book "Where the Wild Things Are." The wait staff were friendly and attentive, knowledgeable about the menu items and patient with our slow ordering process. The varied mixed drinks are fun and yummy - at least the ones we had (The Dewskitch & The Stallion). The curry dish we ordered was so good that I kept eating well beyond my body's natural instinct to stop! As a vegan, I was impressed with the amount of dish options for my diet and I will definitely be back to enjoy more.
The breakfast was awful. The drinks were definitely overpriced for what the were - just mediocre. I could not go back nor recommend.
Hey there, sorry you didn't like your dish -wish we could have learned about this at the time, as we'd happily exchanged it for an alternate. Lot's of other yummy dishes to try- As you probably noted, our drinks have some fantastic and unusual ingredients, and while we price them on average of about $9 each, sorry if this was too much. If you're looking for more value, next time try our $10 bottomless mango mimosas; hard to go wrong! Best wishes :)
Everything my party ordered was bad. The bread on my sandwich was soggy. My friend bothered the chow mein and it was too salty and liquidy. We ordered the peppers and edamame, there was only 3 or 4 peppers and the sauce was so vinegary. It was inedible. My other friend ordered a dish with chicken and rice. The rice was so over cooked that it all clumped together and mushy like mashed potatoes. Drinks were good and the place is cute, so if you're just meeting people for drinks then it'll be good. Otherwise, probably should find somewhere else.
Hi SarahK, Sorry you had an experience that wasn't what you'd hoped for- Our food is a bit unusual vs. most menus- for instance, the bread you mentioned is fried, with a copious amount of sauces. As we describe it, it's very messy, and that's the tradition of the sandwich. Same goes for the rice, it's intentionally made so that it seems over-cooked -as it's a dish that was invented this way; it's not separate rice/ peas , but they're "sticking together" like long lost friends!
Great food and drinks and great service.
You're a great guest, glad to have had you in! :)
Really cool and fun dish and drink options, awesome environment. It was a serious pain trying to find parking, it took nearly 30 min to find a spot. The wings and fried eggplant and sweet plantains were awesome, unfortunately the jerk chicken wasn’t anything to write home about. Overall, we had a great night with some friends from work.
Hey, thanks for chiming in about your experience! Glad you enjoyed what we had to offer here. Really bummed you had a hard time with the parking -wish we could control that, but as a residential neighborhood we have to take the amazingly good beauty ...with the not so amazing parking. Really happy what you found inside was solid though, we look forward to your next visit! :)
Great experience, will be back. Loved the ambiance
Love the aesthetic! Plants everywhere! Delicious food too
I’ve been here a few times and always enjoy it. My partner and I are gf and vegan, and the menu here is perfect! The decor and ambiance is great, somewhat low key and in a great area. Highly recommend!
Fun beach decor and spicy food.
Food tasted absolutely terrible. Hated every bite
We're sorry the dish you picked didn't do it for you -absolutely not our goal, whatsoever. We'd love to have exchanged any dish you weren't enjoying, as we know some items can be a bit unusual. There's almost always another item we can recommend if your initial choice wasn't your favorite. Regardless, if you have any suggestions or can let us know where it went wrong for you, we'd love to know so we can continue to improve -in hope to see you in sometime in the future.
Emma was out server and she was outstanding!! The kitchen was backed up and brought us Corn and Plantain chips with 3 fabulous salsas, my favorite was the roasted carrot and coconut dip!!
The atmosphere was fantastic and the drinks were soooooo good!!! Food was generally good, my jerk chicken was slightly cold but overall my wife and I had a wonderful time!
Thanks for your feedback! Appreciate you joining us, and we hope for many happy returns :)
I love this place! The food is great and the service is equally as good. Drinks are amazing as well. The atmosphere is very inviting and hip. The only issue is parking in the area so I would recommend getting there a bit early if you have reservations to find a spot to park.
Yay!!!! (and good parking advice!) :)
Food was excellent! We were disappointed that we couldn’t buy T-shirt’s, we loved the name of this funky little place.
Ha, T-shirts will be here later this fall! Thanks for he great review!!!
Terrific experience and great food! It was a bit quiet and we wondered where everyone was...
Ya, that was a slow night for sure! It's a BIG room and doesn't always fill, but you choosing us that night filled our hearts! :)
We had a great tune celebrating a friends birthday on Friday night. With a birthday girl with some dietary restrictions Bang Up to The Elephant is the perfect place because you can make everything on the menu work for all sorts of dietary stuff. In addition the food is amazing, especially the curried waffle fries. The staff is always super nice and the cocktails are delicious. Highly recommend for your next dinner gathering or just for happy hour.
YAY!!!! Thanks for taking the time for the great review! :)
Omg this place was amazing, adorable, and so much fun! The drinks..wooowaaahh!!
Food and drinks were delicious, although it took 20 minutes for our appetizers to arrive: habanero wings and edamame and shishito peppers. Definitely a great place if you’re not in a hurry and just want to relax and drink!
Thanks for your kind words! -really sorry for the "island time" wait you experienced for the apps- we hope to get it better next time- Glad you enjoyed everything, be good! :)
Excellent food and wonderful ambience. The service was friendly, but slightly slow.
I got to spend the evening with my adult son. Some food was great: the Nightshade appetizer. The mussel bowl was salty but otherwise bland tasting although visually appealing.
The decor was an almost trashy rainforest vibe. The bathrooms look like portapotties which have been permanently installed. Ick! They do flush and have sinks to wash your hands.
I feel like they could have an iconic and great restaurant if they upped their game a bit on decor and took the mussels off the menu or spiced them up. A nonalcoholic ginger beer and lime juice was similar: pretty tart, needed a bit more pizazz. It could be so good!
Thanks for your colorful review! We killed the Mussels dish, as you're right, it's wasn't our best. And you nailed the trashy rainforest vibe, our wildlife here loves gold spray-painted lamps and worn-out tape cassettes ;) Hope to see you soon! Best wishes, BangUp!
We were greeted by a lackluster host waited quite a long time for our food which taste very very Bland and what's cold.. our server was very pleasant and she took care of us as much as she could because there weren't too many people on the floor as waitresses and waiters so this might have had to do with why we received our cold entrees... drinks for mediocre and I could taste the mix in My Bloody Mary😑
Sorry things didn't go as you our us would have liked- It sounds like you caught us on a "bad night". We hope we can one day make it up to you as we think we have plenty here you'd love. We're hoping we get the chance to see you again soon :)
BUTTE has a very cool vibe, lots of plants, fun decor inside. Our server/service was good, but the food was pretty disappointing. The seitan wings (which were big chunks) were a fail - the first batch was so rubbery they couldn’t even be cut with a knife. They replaced them, and the second batch was a bit less rubbery, but still not an enjoyable texture. Mack the knife roti had nice curry flavor, but was mostly rice with a few chickpeas/bits of tofu, and the potatoes in it were very unevenly cooked, about 1/2 were underdone. The plantain/tortilla chips were completely bland, no salt, no seasoning, and cold. If they aren’t seasoned, they should at least be served warm! The sauces with them were fairly one note in flavor. Drinks were fine, although a lot of them looked to be on the sweet side, so I had a hard time finding anything of interest. Curry waffle fries were probably the high point of the meal, if there was one. The fries were crunchy and hard, more like chips, although that made them hold up better to the curry sauces on them. But the fries without sauce were too crunchy, so we found ourselves rubbing the sauce from one chip onto another to try to soften them up. All in all, we felt a bit let down with the meal, and probably won’t be back.
We're in the middle of launching a new menu here -that we think you're going to love it. It'll be ready in October, and much of it will remedy what you found unsatisfying. For instance, we have an all-new (and GREATLY improved) seitan wings technique which is blowing our minds). We think you're going to dig them! Hopefully, we'll see you again soon this fall- Best wishes, BangUp!
We were very disappointed in our brunch. We had a party of 12 and went here because it claimed to accommodate big parties. The server was rude and didn't take our order after we had been waiting and asked for over 45 minutes (or longer!) Also, the reason we went there was for the coconut cocktails. They didn't have any coconuts.
Came for brunch and loved the atmosphere but man, the service was slow/awful. The girl kept saying it was because it was ‘just her’ that morning but literally it was our table and one other table of two people so...ehhh. Friends all agreed the food was average. Bummer cause the decor is fantastic!
Ya, that's a real bummer. Sorry, you had to have such lousy service on that occasion. Not at all our intention -and as we've made (and continue to make) changes here to live up to our goal of constantly improving, we'd love to have you back to give another go sometime. We think it's a better all-around experience, and would be honored if you gave us another try. Regardless, we truly appreciate your feedback!
Very casual Caribbean restaurant in Denver. Funky interior definitely designed for late night parties or if you go early could be good with kids as the atmosphere/decor is so different. The eggplant appetizer was really tasty, but it is fried and totally unhealthy. Plantains are fine. I had the Cubano sandwich and it was actually good. The pasta was good as well. It’s all pretty unhealthy and a bit greasy and definitely not fancy. Example, the wine options are red, white, but that’s it - very casual, relatively inexpensive. I would honestly not return, but we were there to see some music playing at a bar around the corner and had a large group so this place could fit us in.
:) Thanks for taking the time for such a great review! Sorry it's not your thing, but glad you tried us nonetheless!
Nice place with unusual but good food. Atmosphere was very nice. Noise level was low.
Shark bake was delicious. That’s about all I’ve got for this place.
Service was notably bad.
I was super disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. I walked in thinking this looked like a really unique and cool experience and walked out knowing I would never go back. It took a server 15 minutes to come over and greet our table and it never got much better from there. The food lacks flavor and again service was poor.
Great place for brunch with unique menu and setting.
