Mezze Ratings and Reviews
I always have a great experience here and the food is amazing however we went on a Friday night with an 8:30pm reservation and waited for over an hour before we were seated at a table. It took another 20-30 minutes before we were able to order food! Disappointing experience as I was excited to share one of my favorite restaurants with a visitor. You could tell the staff was busy and possibly understaffed however had we known we would have to wait that long we would have been amenable to coming back another time.
While the food was great the service sucked. We had reservations, and they had us "grab a drink at the bar" so they could " set up an nice table" for us. The man who initially greeted us even asked at one point (30 min in to waiting) "you guys doing alright?", to which I responded "we are still waiting on our table". He again promised it would be ready soon but it was not. After almost 40 min we decided to order food at the bar. Everything came out fine but they did forget one thing. As a "sorry" the bartender gave us free champagne at the end, but nothing off the check. Food was good, but the front of the house needs to get their sh*t together!
Service was quite slow...we waited 20min for a glass of wine and food took a very long time even though the restaurant did not look busy. In hopes to calm our hungry tummies, We ordered spreads and pita bread but when we asked for it the waiter told us it would come out with the rest of our food. We used to love this place but was very disappointing.
We went to Mezze due to its proximity to the Vagabond theater. We ate upstairs. The food was good and reasonably priced. The server was great, a shout out to her. I had two minor issues, one is because of all the plates that come with Tapas, the table was too small. We did have a window ledge but it was cramped. The noise level was very high, this was mostly due to a large birthday table next to us. I would suppose that typically it would not be that loud.
Opentable reservations? What Opentable reservations?
We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and Mezze was busy. It was Friday night so waiting a few minutes was no problem. But as the minutes clicked by and we waited and waited... for over 45 minutes past the reservation time with no apology... That's unacceptable.
I'm really an easy going kind of guy and a comped appetizer or drink would have made it all better. But no... nothing. Not an apology and not a comp...
When the bill came, after very good food, I mentioned something to the waiter, telling him that it wasn't his fault and that I would tip him on the full price of the meal but that I felt that there may be something that the manager might do for us.
He came back truly ashamed and said that they decided not to adjust the bill, not even removing one $10 appetizer.
Oh well I thought. Last time at Mezze for us.
Then I see the manager come up and hand the server something. The server came to the table with 3 $10 coupons to their sister restaurant. Now they have been giving these out like candy so it really wasn't much by way of apology. And the manager couldn't even bother to come by the table himself.
After years dining with the Kali's family, this may have been the last.
With all of the new and truly excellent choices in Baltimore these days, an older place like Mezze should be doing everything possible to insure their success. and in this diner's opinion, they failed on this occasion.
My daughter and I had reservations for Mezze on a Wednesday evening. Arriving on time, the greeter told us to enjoy a drink at the bar while they prepared our table. After 15 minutes we asked if our table outside was ready - half the tables had already been empty when we arrived. The bartender said, "Sure, sit anywhere you want. We literally sat there with our bar drink for another half hour and no one came to give us a menu or acknowledge us in any way. We left and went somewhere else. It looked like the other diners weren't getting much attention either. We talked to some people later in the evening and they said they had always had good experiences with Mezze. Not sure whether they were actually trying to run a restaurant... never had this happen anywhere ever before.
We went for Restaurant Week this Sunday. One of the owners greeted us after about 2 minutes, you could tell it was a little busier than usual so they were a bit understaffed. The food and the people made up for any amount of waiting we did. Robby was our waiter and he was very helpful and had a great outlook and attitude. Since it was restaurant week we didn't need much help with the menu. Sai was the bartender on staff for the evening and he was awesome and even helped out the waiters with drink delivery. We had the sangria at first but the carafe didn't go very far so Sai helped us find an alternative and even made the small tweak I asked for, with a beautiful smile! The ginger margaritas he made were fantastic. The owner was also very sociable and talked to us for a bit. As for the food!!! The tzatziki was the best I've ever had and the hummus was the only hummus my mother has actually liked. The baklava was to die for, very moist, the way I like it! pretty much everything in between was amazing too. (the spinach pie was a tad doughy but it was still not too bad). Over all, wonderful!!! We will be back!
I wish I could really rate this place, but unfortunately we never sat down to eat. After having to ask around for the host (we weren't sure if we were standing in the right place) for a 7:30 reservation, we were told at 7:40 to "enjoy the bar" while they prepared the table. After one drink (the Sangria was tasty--not too sweet) at 8 PM we decided to go to the restaurant across the street. The place was packed, so clearly there must be tasty food here, but unfortunately I will never find out, because I will not be back. I should also mention that the bartender was extremely attentive and even advocated for us with the host (that's why I gave the service 2 stars).
We had a reservation for 7:30 and weren't seated til after 8. This was an indication of the entire evening. It was nearly impossible to track down our waiter or any service for water refills or anything else. By 10 pm we were ready to leave and someone in our party had to leave the table to find help. When he said we were ready for the check, we were told we hadn't had dessert yet (we were there during Baltimore restaurant week) so he brought dessert and while we asked for the check at the same time, we had to wait even longer and didn't get to pay until 10:30. This is great for a leisurely weekend outing, not so much a weeknight evening when we all have obligations the following morning. While the food was great, the overall experience was too frustrating.
I've been to Mezze several times and enjoyed it every time. The menu has changed a bit since last visit, less tapas-style dishes and more regular restaurant portions. We went during restaurant week and was able to sample the most of their tapas-style menu, including hummus ,tzatziki, crab cakes, grape leaves, spinach pies, chicken kebobs. The food was all excellent and service was great. Our server was knowledgable and shared some culture bout the dishes we were served. My only complaint would be in the outdoor seating. While the general atmosphere was nice, we were pretty consistently heckled by vagrants that walked back and forth repeatedly, asking us, and the tables around us, to get any un-eaten food to go and then give it to them afterward. We dined after 9pm and I would imagine this would not be an issue earlier in the evening and this is not the restaurant's fault.
We came here in the start of restaurant week, Sunday evening. I had reservations for 2 made online for 7 o'clock pm. The restaurant capacity was at about 20% at the time, not busy at all. The manager, made us feel special and took us upstairs overlooking the main road and other bars, great scene and a romantic feel setting with fresh roses placed on tables. We waited about 15 min for anyone to notice us and finally poured drinks. It was another hour before our first of five meals was served. Our main course came out before the hummus and pita. Pretty disappointing. Our waiter was very distracted but apologized repeatedly and said he would cover our drinks, which we had to remind him again when our bill came There were some nearby parties sitting nearby that were frustrated with their service as well. It didn't come to us until we got home he never served dessert! (part of our meal course) Pretty bummed about that. It was going on several hours and we were so ready to leave and didn't want to waste more time, so that didn't cross our minds at the time. Oh and the food was flavorful, but not picture worthy. Lump crabs were awesome, the hummus was just okay, a bit of a grit to it, but overall it was pleasant and filling. It appeared our waiter was trying his best, but just ill informed on the restaurant week menu. He was working hard and picking up his workers slack as well, so i emphasize but it was hard to rate well for our overall first visit here.
The food was amazing, but the service wasn't so great. We had an 8pm reservation and arrived about 3 minutes early. We were told to wait at the bar while they cleared a table for us. No one had come back up to us for 30 minutes until we finally flagged down the host ~8:30pm. When we asked how much longer until our table, he looked at us like he had never seen us before even though he was who checked us in. After that we were seated immediately. Once seated, we barely saw our server. It didn't seem too busy, at all times there were plenty of open tables.
Despite the service being poor, the food and ambiance was outstanding. I would return again simply because the food tasted to great.
I come here often and the food is fantastic! I usually sit at the bar. The bartender is extremely attentive and sweet. Unfortunately, every time I sit upstairs, the service is not the best. It takes awhile to get a drink, refills, additional food, check. Though I love the place, so if they add one more server up there hopefully that could help!
