Tonight we got the 6 course tasting menu and left very satisfied and really impressed with the level of thought and detail put into each bite of food we had. I highly recommend the tasting menu. Service was fantastic. I really like how you don’t know what each course is until it arrives in front of you. They give you a general outline - something light, then a soup, then fish, two proteins, and dessert. I think the highlight of the meal for me was the seafood course - it was a piece of lobster served over a *corn* risotto that was truly special and unique. Came with two little pieces of kumquat that added an unexpected sweetness and tartness but really made the dish stand out. These kinds of details made the entire meal such a pleasant experience. Will definitely return!

I can't say enough about Mexique and our exceptional dinner experience. The food was outstanding and plated as a pieces of art. Some of the best Sangria we have ever had.

The food was generally interesting and different at Mexique. It was a little hit or miss in that one of us had an amazing meal that was well prepared and creative while another in our party had a meal that was a bit salty and pretty basic. It is also worth noting that there are no cocktails here but there is a decent sangria, wine and beer selection so just know that going in. Unfortunately the service wasn't great. Our waiter didn't put our order in until pretty late so there was a long wait between appetizers and entrees and in fact our waiter didn't address this so the busboy ended up letting us know the status and make sure we were comfortable.

Another excellent meal at Mexique! I have been going there for a decade and have never had a meal less than superb. The complementary pate was smooth and delicious. The ceviche was simply shrimp with a few minor adornments but in a tangy, light red sauce, yet quite tasty; so much so we asked for a spoon to scoop up every last drop. The lamb, the duck and the trout were all first rate. The lamb was prepared two ways- three beautiful chops and a somewhat spicy mix of chopped lamb and sauce on a little bit of carb the two complemented one another perfectly yielding a delightful duo of meat and extra flavor. The duck is a signature dish and was also prepared in more than one way. I think I will order that next time. The fish was in a corn husk and was more of a comfort dish, soft and warm. With it came a cylinder of squash also full of flavor. Our desert choice was rice pudding, again done with a complexity that is Mexique's hallmark, blackberries and all. I am already looking forward to my next meal there. It is not inexpensive but for a quality night out, it is consistently a great place to go.

Delicious food with delicate, complex flavors. Butternut squash soup is rich and dense. Ceviche is spicy hot but not overly so. Chile relleno is a veggie treat and the desserts are scrumptious. Carne Assad’s is a little too tough, red and undercooked for my taste but others may appreciate it more. Have been here several times and have never been disappointed. Very kind and genuine staff, an upscale casual atmosphere and really well conceived and well prepared food. A favorite in Chicago.

Great hostess, very hospitable
very slow service, food was good once it arrived 45 minutes later
service staff good spiel on food. not educated on bar items i.e. what is port?
For a small menu'd,under 100 seated restaurant, why so chaotic?

Incredible experience. The food was amazing, I highly recommend the steak tartare for an appetizer and the quesadilla negra. The Mar y Tierra was delicious as an entree.

The service was second to none. Our server Raul was super friendly and informative about the different plates.

Our dinner was fantastic at Mexique. It was Restaurant Week and also my husband's birthday. We both had the Restaurant Week menu and everything was delicious and wonderful prepared and presented. The service was excellent as well. All the servers were very attentive and knowledgable about the dishes and the wines.

I became a fan of Carlos Gaytan when he appeared on Top Chef and have been wanting to try Mexique ever since. We finally got the chance and We will definitely return!

We went to Mexique for dinner during Restaurant Week and were not disappointed. My friend and I both tried the entire restaurant menu (photos are attached). Four courses did not disappoint. The service was courteous and friendly. When I asked about the sangria I was given a tasting. Overall, everything was delicious. I loved the butternut squash soup, the carne asada and the salmon and the rice dessert over the apple pie. I plan to go back for the $88 tasting menu.

We visited Mexique for Restaurant Week and were not disappointed.
The selections were unique and varied, reflecting the Mexique fusion style. There was enough spice to make it interesting but not overpowering. Excellent service.
Our only disappointment was not having mixed drinks.
We’ll be back!

We were there for the restaurant brunch special. The first course was great. The ceviche has very bright lime flavor with spicy after taste. The warm vegetable soup also has rich flavor. The second course fish taco comes with a slaw. Some of the tacos was under-seasoned and the slaw is nothing special. The French ham sandwich with poached eggs and brioche bread is somewhat salty when eating more. About the dessert, the bread pudding was unappealing to all of us as the whole thing mostly resembles a dry sponge cake on the outside. We found the arroz rice pudding to have complex sweet flavor mingled with saltiness, fresh berries and flower pedals. Service was great during my visit. Overall the brunch special was an uneven experience. I will visit the restaurant again to try their regular menu but for sure would not include any bread pudding in my future selection.

It was the best meal we've had in a long time. A flavor/texture adventure which blended French and Mexican cooking (hence the name, Mexique). Quiet, slow-paced atmosphere. Award-winning chef visits your table. Took my wife here for her birthday. Had the eight-part meal, and specified what we liked (seafood) and did not (pork). The portion sizes were small, which was perfect for us. The server explained each course as it was served. Everything was delicious and a bit surprising in flavor, and the bottle of wine matched the flavors very well. The price of the meal for two was a little shocking... $300. Just be forewarned, as the multi-part meal price is not on the menu, and like me, you might assume incorrectly that it's reasonable.

I had spotted Mexique years ago and finally had the occasion to go with my husband for our anniversary. It was a cold winter night and the restaurant had only a few tables with customers.
We had a ceviche and quesadilla negra as appetizers, then Mole verde (with monkfish) and Pato al tamarindo as main dishes. Everything was absolutely delicious, and also beautifully presented without being absurdly fancy. Service was impeccable and very friendly.
The restaurant may suffer from its location, away from trendy neighborhoods, but it is in our opinion a plus, people should check away from the crowded places where it is too often impossible to talk or listen to anyone, much less to savor really good dishes!
The decor is modern but with warm colors, very welcoming. Also, the music selection was of incredibly high quality (Yves Montand, Madeleine Peyroux...). We will come back!

Awesome ambiance. Carlos Gaytan knows how to develop great depth of flavors. Savory, spicy, sweet, all there without one ingredient overpowering the others. Prepare your palate for a very rewarding culinary experience. If you’re thinking about it, stop thinking and go. You will not be disappointed.
