Mexique Ratings and Reviews
We have loved Mexique. We go 3-4 times a year. We love taking people who have never been. What I have noticed is, when the owner isn't there, it just doesn't run the same way. Went last night. Beef tartare which I always get, and always rave about, was just ok. Then they clearly forgot to put our dinner order in as we waited over an hour and a half for it to come. I walked to kitchen to inquire about it. Our waiter apologized but it still took 15 -20 min to make our food. After we paid our bill he came and said they would like to buy dessert. We said no thanks. If you want to say sorry, send it immediately when they remove dinner, not as we are leaving.
We have had mediocre service before and we realized last night it's always when he isn't there. He should make sure he has someone watching the room when he takes a night off. There is no manager and it suffers.
Will probably return, but not as quickly and in a city with so many wonderful options, will not run back.
I took my fiance for her bday. When I reserved it asked me a question of what was the occasion, I put down for a birthday. When we arrived the hostess/waiter never mentioned or offered us anything about the birthday. I was very disappointed. Why ask what the occasion in the reservation and not mention or do anything about it????
I recently learned about Mexique from the show "Check Please" and made a reservation. I was shocked to learn that the restaurant has been there for ten years. Why had I not heard about this incredible place? Our food was extraordinary, so delicious and plated so beautifully. Service was excellent and meeting the chef was so exciting (he is quite handsome)! I also loved the decor, tasteful and calming. I will be returning with my family on the next special occasion. I just loved everything! Well worth the price. Outstanding, creative food.
Mexique never disappoints. Chef Carlos continues to create new and exciting dishes that honor the essential flavors of Mexico while celebrating fresh, seasonal ingredients. On this visit, the salmon with esquites and epazote beurre blanc was the standout dish- perfectly balanced with hits of line, chile and sweet corn and butter. The ceviche with a prickly pear aguachile sauce and even the humble tomato soup with guajillo were also remarkable.
I met my son for a birthday lunch. I had been there before a long time ago but it was his first visit. Neither of us wanted to over eat so we opted for appetizers. It was a great choice. We shared a ceviche which we both agreed was the best ever. Then we each had quesadilla special which was a beautiful dish and delicious .
Mexique provided a great meal. It was creative yet approachable. Everything we tried was elevated to another level, both in flavor and in appearance. An example was the Dorado Al Pastor. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned to be very flavorful; it sat on a bed of spinach which was also perfectly cooked and served over the pork al pastor atop a crispy item that appeared to be a plaitain chip. The whole thing was topped with thin slices of fresh pineapple. The dish was lovely to look at but was so delicious that it didn't last long.
Other dishes were equally good. The service was impeccable, and clearly the server had tried all the menu items and loves the food.
Overall it was a delightful lunch experience and I look forward to enjoying a dinner there.
I’d been wanting to go here for a while, and it did not disappoint. The appetizers and the main courses were all amazing. Standouts were the mussels, the tartare, the duck and the lamb. The desserts were the only thing that didn’t impress. We tried the chocolate dessert, which was dry and the poached pears. If I go again, I’d skip those. Also, our waiter was lovely, but had a tendency to mumble, so the long explanations were hard to follow. I’d definitely recommend it though overall.
It's a good restaurant, the atmosphere is good, but the attention is not so good, I had to wait for a waitress in training and it was difficult for her to explain the food. The chef is good and the food combination very good. I would suggest a friend go to the restaurant, especially for the celebration of some special occasion, anniversaries, etc. I think it lends more to go as a couple.
Enjoyed the food, and was very pleased with the helpful server! She helped us select our entrees - and when the question of "how spicy" something was, she brought us a sample of the salsa that would come with the dish we were considering. When I asked for hot tea (as they do not serve Mexican Hot Chocolate) because the restaurant was chilly, our server boosted the thermostat a tad - and it was comfortable in a few minutes.
We did weekend brunch. Pozole was good, but not at all a traditional version. The 3 different tacos were all tasty, and pork belly cazuela with black beans, potatos, azedero cheese (super yummy) and eggs was a lovely take on a skillet dish!
We will probably return to try the dinner menu.
I saw the great reviews but rarely see the restaurant busy so felt I was taking a bit of a gamble ... but it was absolutely delicious. I will definitely go there again and am largely reviewing it to be sure other folks know about it so we don't lose another neighbordhood gem!
Don't miss Mexique
Mexique offers an amazing and creative take on Mexican food. Don't expect the food you can get at any Mexican restaurant. The poblano soup would get rave reviews at Les Nomades and the short ribs were wonderful and unusual. At one time my wife thought the food was too hot but not anymore. The spices are complex and aromatic but not at all hot. It gets very busy on the weekends so try it during the week.
Anyone who used to enjoy Salpicon or still enjoys Rick Bayless food should try Mexique.
My wife doesn't like onions and asked if the chicken enchilada could be made without. Unfortunately the chicken is already mixed in with the onions can can't be removed. Just as my wife was getting ready to order something different, our waiter came back and said the chef could make the enchilada with pork which doesn't have onions. Such a nice thing for them to offer. Food was delicious and the service was great. We were there for brunch, but will definitely come back soon for dinner.
I go to Mexico pretty often and I like the real Mexican food. I was looking for a place where the food is refined but simple in its authenticity. I am happy I found it and I am planning to go there often. All the food we ordered was equally interesting and well thought.
Made a reservation for Saturday night at 7:00pm with my wife and daughter. Enjoyed several times before.
Last night was a bit disappointing. The soup was not hot enough and chances are they would not even pass the health departments standard for temperature. I informed the waiter and he responded, he would let the chef know. Now comes the dinner, which seemed to take a bit longer than it should have. My daughter and I had the chili rellenos and my wife had a chicken dish. Both were very tasteful but all they also were lukewarm in temperature when we got them. I also informed the waiter and he responded with the same answer. With a bottle of wine the bill was $186.57

The restaurant was not full so I am confused why the soup and other plates were not hot.
My wife and my third time dining at Mexique and first time we didn't order the tasting menu. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not, but the a la carte dining experience was nothing super special. From the service, which was below average at best, to the food, which was good, but not great, this visit left a lot to be desired especially considering the price point.
I wouldn't hesitate to visit again, however I would only go with the reasonably priced tasting menu.
Haven't been at Mexique for over a year and it is better than ever. Great table in the window. Excellent wine, terrific service and outstanding food. The special swordfish was amazing. A simple relleno was elevated to something I will want to eat as often as I can. Won't wait very long to go back. Truly exceptional!
An unusual combination: mexican food cooked with french techniques. Extremely nice combinations, and surprising flavors in every dish. Tasting menu is a very good option for sampling the most representative dishes of this chef. Wine list is short but very nicely priced
I'm a New York foodie and have heard about this celebrated chef Carlos Gaytan and his French influenced Mexican cuisine. When a business trip brought me to Chicago I made a reservation. Wanting to try everything I ordered the tasting menu paired with wine. My favorites: the salmon and the herb crusted rack of lamb, but really one delicious dish followed another all beautifully presented. The wine, mostly from Mexico and California, nicely balanced and complemented the food. The wait staff was attentive and personable; the ambiance pleasant and comfortable. Chef Gaytan masterfully combines these two cuisines creating a unique dinning experience. I can't wait to go back.
Very much enjoyed our dinner. We started with the mushroom soup, which was excellent! Then moved to the duck and short rib entrees. Both outstanding!
My only feedback for improvement is for the price-point the room needs to be updated in artwork, and painted. Also, I found both the starters and desserts limited. The kitchen prepared an off-menu bowl of ice cream, but for some reason the rum raisin ice cream was garnished with strawberry that was not ripe and not needed?
Superlative food. We had the tasting menu and each course was unique unlike anything else meticulously constructed , beautifully plated and explained in detail by our waitress who was honestly engaged in the experience along with us. We sent our regards on each course to the kitchen . Our chef came out to meet us. A truly wonderful meal.
