Mexique Ratings and Reviews
Awesome ambiance. Carlos Gaytan knows how to develop great depth of flavors. Savory, spicy, sweet, all there without one ingredient overpowering the others. Prepare your palate for a very rewarding culinary experience. If you’re thinking about it, stop thinking and go. You will not be disappointed.
This by far is one of the best restaurants in Chicago , the food was delicious, service was outstanding, the best part was the chef Carlos Gaytán was very attentive making sure everyone had an amazing experience. I would recommend this restaurant to all my friends
I was at Mexique for a holiday get together with a girlfriend who I've been dining with for 20+ years. What a treat for both of us. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings and both of us were impressed and delighted with every offering. This is a huge amount of food. Each tasting was hardly the usual amount you would expect for this type of menu but was so delicious that you couldn't imagine leaving a morsel untouched. The salad, the soup, seafood, beef and dessert - well, each one we exclaimed was the best until we tasted the next.
It is so unfortunate that my terrible memory kicked in and that I cannot remember the name of our server. She was wonderful. She was so knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings that we came away from the evening hoping to get back soon for dinner again but also hoping that we would see her again - we will make sure of that! Everyone needs to experience Mexique. We're sure you will feel the same.
While I am Mexican this was the first time I have experience this type of food. I have nothing but good things to say about the food. It was a great way to cap 2017 off and I can say I will gladly return in 2018 again with some friends. The food just made you want to continue eating.
Wonderful dining experience! Warm and inviting on a freezing night, Raul , our server was so knowledgeable, warm and professional. We tried many beautiful and delicious items! PEIMussels with chorizo in an amazing delicious “bisque,broth”... got more bread to dip in broth!, cochinitas, monk fish mole , short ribs, Ceviche, and more,,, Delicious.! And Gaytan came out and introduced himself! Bravo!
Always fantastic. My wife and I live in another state but have family in the Chicago area. Every time we come into Chicago for the holidays or other occasions we make it a point to visit Mexique. We've been doing this for 4 or 5 years now and have always ordered the Chef's tasting menu with wine pairings. It's very difficult to have that many plates without a disappointment--but that's what's happened so far. The wines and pairings have also been great and spot on. I would highly recommend Mexique (and already have to several friends). Highly creative and well-balanced meals with exquisite flavors. I don't think I can say more. Chef Carlos Gaytan is the best, and a modest and great guy to boot. (One warning: If you get the 8-course tasting with wines pairings--beware that can be a lot of wine, as I learned on our last post-Christmas visit. Fortunately we used Uber/Lyft...)
Delicious food—every item creative, unexpected, a work of pure genius. Mexican flavors are present, but the dishes bear little resemblance to your basic tacos and enchiladas. Beautiful presentations add to the meal. We ordered a la carte but next time will definitely try the tasting menu. The servers were knowledgeable and friendly. Chef/owner Carlos came out from the kitchen to say hello, and was very charming. This place is a gem!
We have returned to Mexique many times since it opened about 10ish years ago. It is one of our favorite Chicago restaurants. It is fine dining that is comfortable, warm and inviting. It's personal. It's not unusual to see Carlos visiting with his guests. The food, which is always evolving, is creative Mexican using some French techniques. Their ceviche with citrus juice and fresh herbs is a great way to start. I absolutely love their Asada. It's new preparation combines Carne Asada which sits atop a fondue cheese with sunchokes and tomatoes. Their Mole sauce is also noteworthy...very complex and delicious, something you won't be making at home. The food at Mexique is exquisite. Everything is remarkable...and, over the years, we have had everything. Their food presentation is outstanding and the wait staff couldn't be nicer. Make sure to save room for dessert. Their chocolate lava-like cake is perfection. The liquid chocolate pours out of it with your first bite. We love this restaurant!
We enjoyed such a fabulous meal for our anniversary here. We did the Tasting Menu with the wine paring and each dish was incredible and the wine perfect. Chef Gaytan delivered one of the courses himself and wanted to know about our experience. And they quickly added a special desert with a candle when learning it was a special day for us. Highly recommend.
Very fancy food presentation, very fancy atmosphere, very attentive service.
Perfect for special occasion, or celebration. Very authentic Mexican dishes with a hint of French cuisine. Elegant taste and good value on menu items. Highly recommend for upscale dining. Will definitely return with friends.
We have loved Mexique. We go 3-4 times a year. We love taking people who have never been. What I have noticed is, when the owner isn't there, it just doesn't run the same way. Went last night. Beef tartare which I always get, and always rave about, was just ok. Then they clearly forgot to put our dinner order in as we waited over an hour and a half for it to come. I walked to kitchen to inquire about it. Our waiter apologized but it still took 15 -20 min to make our food. After we paid our bill he came and said they would like to buy dessert. We said no thanks. If you want to say sorry, send it immediately when they remove dinner, not as we are leaving.
We have had mediocre service before and we realized last night it's always when he isn't there. He should make sure he has someone watching the room when he takes a night off. There is no manager and it suffers.
Will probably return, but not as quickly and in a city with so many wonderful options, will not run back.
I took my fiance for her bday. When I reserved it asked me a question of what was the occasion, I put down for a birthday. When we arrived the hostess/waiter never mentioned or offered us anything about the birthday. I was very disappointed. Why ask what the occasion in the reservation and not mention or do anything about it????
I recently learned about Mexique from the show "Check Please" and made a reservation. I was shocked to learn that the restaurant has been there for ten years. Why had I not heard about this incredible place? Our food was extraordinary, so delicious and plated so beautifully. Service was excellent and meeting the chef was so exciting (he is quite handsome)! I also loved the decor, tasteful and calming. I will be returning with my family on the next special occasion. I just loved everything! Well worth the price. Outstanding, creative food.
Mexique never disappoints. Chef Carlos continues to create new and exciting dishes that honor the essential flavors of Mexico while celebrating fresh, seasonal ingredients. On this visit, the salmon with esquites and epazote beurre blanc was the standout dish- perfectly balanced with hits of line, chile and sweet corn and butter. The ceviche with a prickly pear aguachile sauce and even the humble tomato soup with guajillo were also remarkable.
