Metropolis Oyster Room and Cocktail Bar Ratings and Reviews
Great music and fine food, lovely atmosphere--what more could you ask for? We went to Mteropolis to hear the wonderful Hila Kulik on piano. What an extra plus to be introduced to a marvelous young jazz singer Katini Yamaoka-Dinkubahi . The other musicians were top notch as well. We weren't even thinking about the food--so it was a treat to find the small but exquisite menu. Fish is the specialty, and our group really enjoyed the sushi appetizer and salmon main. The terrific waitress didn't blink when asked to accommodate the vegetarian in our group--brought a yummy fava bean ravioli that wasn't on the menu. A rhubarb tart for the table was a perfect finish.
No one came to check on us after dropping off our food. Tried to wave down the staff for refill on water but never got the attention. We noted another table near us kept getting refills and plates cleared. It wasn't busy so I'm not sure what the issue was. We decided not to stay for dinner and left after we had our oyster and prawn platter which were tasty to be fair. Jazz and ambiance was nice as well. Too bad service put a bad taste in our mouths.
We had a great Brunch with jazz music at Metropolis yesterday. The food was delicious , great service , elegant room and good live music. Too bad there were not more customers to fill the room and create a more vibrant ambiance . The Blue Water grill upstairs was packed and not Metropolis downstairs .. I don't understand why. It deserves much better.
Went for Valentine's Day. They had a four-piece jazz band playing the entire time. It's slightly more casual than Blue Water Grill upstairs. Guidance from our server about what to order wasn't very helpful, but the sushi was fantastic and the cocktails were strong. Loved it.
The place is so nice since the renovation, but not making the most of it. The live band seems like they don't enjoy playing there. The entire place needs a bit more life. The service was just ok, we had to constantly ask for someone as we did not have a set waiter.
the Metropolis Room has a small menu, but everything we ordered was delicious. the service was attentive but not intrusive. it is a bit pricey, but we wanted to have a nice dinner in a lovely restaurant and also listen to live music while we dined. so, for our party of six, we were satisfied with our evening.
Not sure why they call this an oyster bar. Just a few cooked oyster selections on the menu, and wait staff had no idea what kind of oysters were being served ("east coast and west coast"). Oysters Rockefeller served luke warm with a taste of oysters that were far from fresh. Service abominable. Had to keep tripping waiters to ask to have our wine refilled. Very nice jazz in a comfy room though. Shame the food and service are so bad when the venue and music are so good.
We would not return to Metropolis. We loved the decor and the jazz was great. The ambience is as advertised. The place has a lot of potential.
The food was good (not great), but the service was just awful. After waiting, we had to call someone over to take our order. Even after the oysters took a while to come out, we also had to ask at least twice when our entrees would arrive. The place wasn't even full. Several of the large booths behind us were empty.
Our bill was almost $800.00. There is simply no excuse for bad service at that price.
There are better places in the city to enjoy jazz and dinner than Metropolis. Go somewhere else.
Great live jazz music... not too loud. Flavored Oyster selection was confusing as menu listed 6 different choices and noted that you had to order a minimum of 3 .... but we were told you had to have a minimum of 3 of each type..... totally wrong way.... change your policy or make the wording on the menu fuller explanation. Food was good but, overpriced.... I guess to pay for the music and the new interior design. Also portions on drinks should have been more generous.
This is a very beautiful restaurant. Everyone seemed very focused on making this a wonderful experience, so I feel that the service was just superb. This is no small thing in New York; it's hard to come by, and it makes me want to go back to this beautiful spot and take my husband and friends who I know would appreciate being well cared for as we have a fantastic meal. I would say a thing or two about the food. It was really delicious and expensive. The loaf of bread that comes to the table, brought by the most gracious server, is so wonderful that I wish it were a little more generous. I understand that it's not necessary, because filling up on it could really spoil what follows, but it seems like a place that costs a lot to eat at should just be a little more lavish with the things that come without ordering. The one part of the meal that I didn't think was up to the high standard set for the food was the oysters that we ordered. My friend's mother was with us and she loves oysters but she said she felt that the oysters Rockefeller were just a lot of parsley. I wouldn't have said that, but the flavor was no match for all the other amazing dishes we had. This is an expensive restaurant in my humble opinion, but the food, the great service, the beautiful atmosphere with a jazz trio and a angelic singer make it perfect for a special splurge. Thank you all and hope to see you again soon.
Helped that we had a perfect seat for the excellent jazz trio+singer. They played standards and set the mood for the place, classy, sophisticated while comfortable. The shellfish platter for two was the perfect amount, and the cocktails were spot on. Staff were all attentive and professional.
If you love jazz and oysters, this is your place! Terrific trio provides fabulous ambience to this softly-lit hideaway in Union Square. Limited menu, but lovely. Seafood towers are yummy, priced for the number of diners: oysters, clams, shrimp, crab legs, lobster. The small loaf of hot crusty bread dropped off by a smiling member of the wait staff is worth the trip. Ashley will tell you everything you want to know about the place, including their chef from Per Se. Excellent wines.
We have been going to the Blue Water for years have celebrated many family and special occasions there. The service has always been good. On Friday night we celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary at Metropolis and I have to say it was memorable. I always comment to my husband how I wish we had a good supper club in New York City to go to. He always said maybe its to old fashioned. Well Metropolis is a good alternative to that. We want to thank everyone in service they made the occasion perfect. Our waiter was so amiable and helped us feel at home. Thanks again for everything. GladysJ
Outstanding customer service. Our party of four was seated early & treated to a lovely variety of Jazz musicians! The servers were knowledgable & friendly. I highly recommend the table side martinis and the flavored oysters! Superb! We look forward to our next dinner.
Amazing food and service. Our dinner may have been the best meal we ever had in a restaurant, better than many "famous and expensive" restaurants. Seafood tower was fabulous. Caesar salad was enough for two and the Surf and Turf Tartare was delicious. My wife had the chicken and it was juicy and tasty. My Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection and the side dish of spinach and potato was very creative and out of this world. Not sure how we had room for dessert, but the Chocolate Mousse and Apple Crisp were to die for. We would absolutely go back again and would rate Metropolis 5*, not to be missed if you have the opportunity.
Father's Day brunch in the Jazz Room.....good food, great music. We were a little surprised that the staple brunch cocktails (Bloody Mary's and Mimosa's) were not included in the price but we still enjoyed ourselves and plan to return. The sushi was fresh and delicious and the crab cakes were fantastic. The music was delightful and it made the brunch extra special.
We sat in the jazz room which was awesome. The sushi is to die for, I will be back for that specifically. The waiter was great, his suggestions where exceptional. The only thing about him was it took a while to get the check, on the other hand we didn't feel rushed. The atmosphere was great and the food was all amazing.
