Service was extremely slow. We waited quite a while before our drinks were served. Even the appetizer arrived before the drinks. I had the veggie tacos and they were not flavorful, just a really smoky taste which I didn’t care for. My dinner companions did enjoy their meals however.
Well done! Great addition to the dining options in SLO
It was excellent- from quality of food to service and very attractuve decor. Not your typical Mexican restaurant.
We were greeted with a happy birthday to my MIL. I had noted that in the reservation, so that was a nice touch. Got seated right away. Took our drink orders and said water would be coming. It never came so we were eating chips and salsa with nothing to drink. Had to ask for more chips, more salsa, more water.
The service level was poor. They didn’t service us except to ask for our order and bring our food. We had to ask for everything. It took an inordinate amount of time to get our food but when it came it was delicious.
Lots of wait staff around, but like I said they weren’t there to give service they were just order takers and food delivery.
As I had mentioned earlier they acknowledged the birthday, but didn’t give a bd dessert which I had expected since I had noted it and it was even mentioned upon our arrival. I would say the staff needs more training in how to service their customers if they want people to return. The good food is not enough in a town full of good restaurants.
We sat on the patio with heaters, so can’t speak too much to the ambience inside. I did notice it kind of echoed inside, making it difficult to hear. That’s the only thing negative I can say. The staff, the food, the drinks... oh my goodness. If you live in SLO or are just passing through, you must visit Mestiza. We’ll definitely keep coming back.
First time here and loved everything about it! Excellent food, good variety, beautiful decor and ambiance. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend!
Waited 20+ Minutes for my drink order to arrive. Once it arrived it was undrinkable. I ordered a margarita and it tasted like pure orange peel. I did not request a remake or different drink because I didn’t want to wait another 20 minutes. Server was fine but had too many guests to serve.
Service slow and not consistent
Great food! The only bummer was the table service. We were literally sitting in our own table filth (salsa droppings, chips ... ) and the waiter was clueless. We actually had to ask him twice to wipe off our table. We are not germaphobs by any means, but sitting at your table when you’ve made a bit of a mess is not good, it’s gross. Good wait staff should be checking your table for clean ups constantly. Yes the waiter was nice, but maybe it’s a training opportunity for your staff. Tell them to clean up the tables, messes and dishes while the customer is sitting at the table. Don’t wait until they leave. We also sat looking at our finished dinners for way too long and had to ask for our bill. So your wait staff could use some training overall.
We went to Mestiza on a weeknight for dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday. Our area has a plethura of lower end, taqueria type Mexican restaurants but lacks a better than average, sit down Latin influenced fine dining options. Mestiza fills that need very well. Wonderful drinks, beer and wine list. The menu is nicely varied and we shared two appetizers, a wonderful quesadilla and watermelon gazpacho. The gazpacho was the weakest dish of our entire meal but was overwhelmingly great. The service is friendly, thorough and prompt when it needs to be and reserved when it needs to be. We enjoyed a wonderfully paced meal with bold, well spiced, fresh ingredients and food that rivals meals we've had throughout Mexico while travelling. I feel it was a fantastic value and very reasonably priced for the overall experience.
The food was delicious. The ambiance and the decor was very inviting.
Although the restaurant was not crowded we arrived at 6:15 in the evening there are only two people at the bar we waited for a half an hour to get a drink after it was ordered.
The waiter kept into her repeat our conversation to ask if we wanted to order food so that he could go about his other chores. Twice we had to remind him that we wanted to finish our drinks before we ordered. Service overall on two different occasions has been dreadful.
Food was good but very limited menu and very small portion size . Restaurant is very noisy and staff is limited . Waiting 20 minutes for water , another 20 chips and salsa and another 15 for a beer. It’s a new place so maybe just getting feet wet but I am reluctant to return
The Manager/ Hostess was very nice as was our server Amy along with Lupe! The food was full of flavor! Highly recommend!!
Fabulous margaritas! and queso fundido appetizer was quite good.
Wonderful place! Love the modern Mexican decor, fabulous drinks, al fresco or indoor dining. Great service and wonderful food!
My husband and I dined during a stop in SLO for our vacation. Definitely try the chicken enchiladas!! Beautiful interior and the staff were friendly.
This was our first visit to Mestiza. The ambiance is very nice. We split the Chile Rellano and the Chicken Enchiladas. They were both super good; great flavor and presentation. The waitress was very nice and attentive. She answered my questions about Tequila after consulting w/ bartender.
Beautiful restaurant. Chips & salsa were excellent... service was good. Sadly, the meal could have been better.
One of our guests found the meal muy picante even though she had specified to the server she wanted mild. We all tasted our food and agreed wholeheartedly. The server replaced the meal with another entrée choice, but we had all finished eating our meals so she ate alone. Mestiza has a fairly pricey menu for Mexican food, even so-called gourmet Mexican food. With the keen competition for similar cuisine in this small town, I think the chef is going to have to accommodate to some special requests. We would certainly return to Mestiza; I am not sure the other guests would
Great laid back place.
Highlights: Squash quesadilla, guacamole and salsas (super yummy) , fish tacos.
We were attended to immediately by the host and our servers was excellent.
Food came out with great spacing. Enjoyed starters to mains. They also served chips, chicharon and salsa.
Overall, awesome dining experience!!
Will come back to this gem
Family dinner for Labor Day weekend
THIS WAS OUR FIRST TIME AT THE RESTAURANT. THE AMBIANCE WAS WONDERFUL AND SERVICE GOOD. THE FOOD WAS GOOD AND THE DRINKS VERY SMALL. MY HUSBAND HAD A BEER WHICH WAS SERVED IN A SMALL BAR GLASS. I HAD A MARGARITA ALSO SERVED IN A QUITE SMALL GLASS NOT A GOOD VALUE FOR THE FOOD OR COCKTAIL. OUR SERVER WAS VERY PLEASANT BUT WE FELT QUITE RUSHED TO ORDER DINNER. WE ORDERED OUR COCKTAIL AND WE WERE ASKED FOR OUR MEAL CHOICES TWICE WITHIN 15 MINUTES.
Our waitress Victoria was very good and we got in right away which was a good thing as it’s a popular place. We left our dinners but just thought they were a little pricey. I ordered dessert and I didn’t care for it and the waitress took it off the bill which was nice. I would go back maybe with some friends.
I made a reservation on Open table and got to the restaurant and it was closed!!! Very disapointed
Food was great - I had the white prawns and they were served over peppers, garlic and vegetables. The accompanying rice was light and tasty. Service was very good too.
We enjoyed everything about our meal — great selection of cocktails, tequilas and mezcal; we loved the queso fundido as a starter; the enchiladas and shrimp selections were excellent; the strawberry shortcake dessert was wonderful. Our service was outstanding and the ambiance was enjoyable. The bar is a nice place to stop before or after dinner, or have dinner served there. This is a great addition to our city.
Everything was incredible. Loved the guacamole, our entrees and the churro dessert. The margaritas were awesome. Highly, highly recommend!
Wonderful New Restaurant! Amazing Food and great service!
We sat outside on a warm night - great ambiance, very relaxing. Our server, Avalon, was excellent and the food outstanding - not your typical Mexican food. Great drinks as well. Loved the pork rinds!!
We asked to be moved outdoors and the staff was very accommodating
We sat at a table which was in an access to the outdoor tables. I got run into several times by the wait staff while eating or drinking. IMO the table should not be there. The wait staff is inexperienced. Water glasses were neglected. They had trouble pouring wine. Salad portions were large. The Chile relleno is excellent! Finished Plates sat on the table not cleaned for 1/2 hour before they were removed.
I would like to see the menu expanded and a little more ambiance and intimacy on the inside. I think this restaurant will do well with some attention to the above items.
Parking was difficult on Friday in the summer with concerts on the plaza. Thursday will be tough also with farmers market. They are closed Sunday and Monday.
We have been to this restaurant several times now. Really enjoy the food and the presentation! I have fallen in love with the Pacific Aplastado cocktail! YUMMY. It was first time we had Katelyn Pedersen as a server. SHE WAS GREAT! Wonderful smile, Wonderful personality, Wonderful service!
See you guys next time ... and we will bring our friends!
I think they’re trying to hard. I went with seven coworkers on our road trip business meeting.
I ordered the vegan tacos with mushrooms and squash.. very bland with no flavor, I must have used a pint of hot sauce on then to make them flavorful.
None of my coworkers were blown away the options they ordered as well.
Not worth the price, If you want rice and beans you must order them all a cart, the tacos come In 2 or 3s.. street taco size.
We were seated outside so can't really judge the interior noise but it was pleasant on the patio. Our server did a good job up until the food was delivered. An expeditor brought out our entrees after we had a starter with a cocktail. We wanted to order wine to go with our dinner but had to ask a bus person to get her to come to the table. I have found this problem elsewhere. A different person brings the food but if the waitperson doesn't come to check and soon, then the diner is left with no one to ask for anything additional or comment.
As for the food, the gazpacho was great, really refreshing flavors of fruits and spices with just a little lime and orange juice base. I had the quesadilla, underwhelming in flavor since the cheese was very bland. BF had a chile relleno (he's a connoisseur of) and it came in a ramekin with lots of liquid. After he added rice, which came on the side, he was able to absorb some of the liquid but altho he said the taste was fine, the interior cheese wasn't very melted but more like a big blob.
The interior looks lovely and I will happily dine here again and enjoy seeing how the ambiance is inside. Overall, I think it's a great addition to town, Mexican but more stylistic and upscale.
THIS IS GOING TO BE MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT FROM NOW ON! NOT AFRAID TO SAY IT'S THE BEST!
Our had the enchiladas, the chili rellenos and the fish tacos. All were excellent. Service was warm and professional. The only improvement to be made is with the desserts.
Neat place with a cool party vibe - it was extremely loud when we were there - a bit pricy for Mexican food
The service was terrific! My Cesar salad had brown lettuce in it. My tacos were ok but not much to them. They are new so sure hope they will improve
