Mes Reves - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Classic French food at its best here, and the best part it is a BYO. The menu and the food have been consistent since its opening five years ago. And on occasion when the chef has the opportunity to be creative, he never ceases to amaze. That type of talent will be missed, and we can only hope that he comes back soon.
Mes Reves, which is closing in two weeks, did not live up to my expectations. Although it is a lovely place and we were warmly welcomed, the food was not to my taste. I was eagerly anticipating the skate, but it was overly seasoned and mushy in texture: not like skate I've had in Paris! The calamari in the salad was delicious and crisp, but the romaine lettuce was heavily dressed with a too sweet dressing that tasted a bit like tartar sauce. Perhaps the restaurant is winding down, but if it was remaining open I would definitely not return.
Our most recent visit to Mes Reves was not good. We have been there several times and had wonderful meals; this time the food tasted bad - not spoiled but just had horrible flavor. My husband started with the crab cakes which had so much red bell pepper in them that he couldn't taste the big lumps of crab. What a shame.
I had the foie gras which was overcooked and 1 1/4 inches square. It was minuscule for $19 dollars. Had it been cooked correctly it would have been good, except for the ridiculous size. I then followed with the skate. The piece of fish was fresh and should have been delightful but it was muddy tasting. I don't know what they used to sauce and season it but it was not good at all! Yuck. I usually adore skate prepared simply, but not this. My husband had the sea bass special served in a brown butter sauce which was not seasoned and tasted very flat and greasey. again, not good.
I ordered the bread pudding which was supposed to be a plain bread pudding with vanilla. It had so much orange it in that I couldn't eat it. Even the vanilla ice cream on it was flavored strangely in an unappetizing way. The Flan was good as was the cappuccino.
We will try it once more after a few months but we hated the dinner this time. It was just awful.
I discovered Mes Reves in looking for a restaurant in the Montclair /Bloomfield Area on Open Table about a year ago. We enjoyed it then and decided to return to see if it was as good. It definitely was--the service was professional. the food beautifully presented and delicious as well and the ambiance was definitely upscale. All four of us would definitely return. Prices were reasonable considering the quality of the food, service and ambiance. On top of all this, Mes Reves is BYOB.
When Friends of Nutley Singers contacted me about a fundraiser at Mes Reves I went happily, but was a little worried in spite of the good reviews.
Overwhelmed is the word. By the superb food, the beautiful surroundings, the coddling service, and just the whole, exciting experience. And it is a BYOB, which gives one the opportunity of drinking better wine at a lower price - always nice.
Sauteed duck liver with a slightly sweet port wine sauce and tiny bits of butternut squash was utterly amazing. Cooked properly rare, seared outside, and sauced brilliantly delighted.
We also ordered crisped sweetbreads, which were crisp. The sauce was delicious, but a little thick for the delicate sweetbreads.
Our three mains: perfectly cooked large scallops on a bed of risotto which had been cooked to perfection.
A classic Nicoise salad was fresh and delicious.
My crisped skate was a large portion - but I had to finish it. Its sauteed mushrooms and crisped capers were a lovely option
We shared a bread pudding with sauce vanille which was just enough.
Did I mention the lovely bread?
So, a return visit
A neighbor introduced us to Mes Reves telling me that "Bloomfield is giving Montclair a run for its money". Intrigued, I scheduled a reservation immediately. I was not disappointed.
My dinner companion and I were greeted and seated immediately and water poured shortly thereafter. Our waitress was attentive and never rushed us through any part of our evening. It turned out we were able to enjoy our experience there for 3 hours. No reason to rush over such well prepared and beautifully presented food. Actually, my dinner companion had enough to take leftovers home.
Try this place! They offer a fixed price menu during the week (only). Parking is on the street and you BYOB. All add up to a lovely evening.
I've been wanting to try Mes Reves out for a couple of years. So when my husband asked what I wanted for my birthday, I asked to go out for a nice dinner. The service was great. I asked for a substitute for one of the sides that came with my lamb and was pleasantly accommodated. We both enjoyed our food, the ambiance and overall experience.
The restaurant has a very chic urban vibe that was unexpected in Bloomfield. They have cozy banquette seating as well as tables. There was a large group having a party, which appeared to be well-served and they weren't overly noisy.
I would not only like to return, but I would definitely recommend it.
Because it's BYOB, I think you get a lot for your money.
Bon appetit, mes amis!
Scallops were best thing, foie gras was pretty good, chef actually brought out a second one because he said he didn't like the look of the first even though we thought it was fine. Escargot was disappointing, it was a modern take on it I guess but just didn't work. Ordered the NY strip with their sauce and it wasn't good, the meat quality was sub par in my opinion, bit tough and chewy and there was a ton of tendons. Maybe that's what NY strip is and I don't get it often enough (generally prefer Rib eye or porterhouse) but was disappointing though the flavor and sauce were good.
We found Mes Reves on Open Table since we found ourselves in the area. I can't believe how lucky we were to find such a wonderful place! From the moment we walked in the door we were made to feel welcome. The staff was excellently trained and they worked well with each other and the Chef in the kitchen, which produced an outstanding meal. We started with the mushroom tart. Deep rich mushroom flavor and delectable pastry. I was interested to see that some Asian mushrooms were included and it was a very nice twist. My husband had the scallop special over saffron risotto and he loved it. Scallops perfectly cooked and a good portion of risotto which was not mushy or gluey as so often happens. The chef knew what he was doing! I had the duck which was great!. Our waitress Janine was very careful to talk to me about the meaning of 'rare' for my duck. It came out beautifully and was fantastic. We did order the chocolate souffle when we ordered dinner. It was probably one of the best souffles I have ever had. Not deeply chocolatey but oh so light and flavorful. It comes with some creme anglaise to pour into your souffle after you take a spoonful out of the middle. Even after that it never really fell. Light and fluffy to the last bite - yum.
Janine was great to chat with after our meal and made such a great impression, taking about the chef and the restaurant in general.
Can't recommend this restaurant and staff enough. We will be going back soon!
It is BYOB but there are two liquor stores within 3 blocks so not an issue.
The food was absolutely fantastic! The escargot could have used a tad bit more salt. The foie gras appetizer was delicious, as well as the duck breast entree and the steak frites entree. The flan desert was out of this world! The service was slower than most restaurants, but it allowed my husband and I a nice time to talk and enjoy our champagne. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back. By the way, my husband is Parisian born and raised and he completely approved!
Such a dissappointment.
Our waitress was oblivious to interrupting our conversation, and yet ignored our empty plates, never asked if we wanted coffee and didn't bring us our bill until we called her over.
The food was decent, my husband had the escargot & salmon, which he really liked. I had the salad, which was decent, and the lamb which cost $39 and was tasteless.
We pre-ordered the chocolate souffle and yet it still took forever to be served.
Our bill came to $144 (no alcohol)for 2 people.
Went back to Mes Revs during recent Bloomfield Restaurant week. Had a nice prix fixe menu of $30. My wife had the Salmon special, and it was perfectly cooked. I went off the prix fixe menu to have .the Rack of lamb at $39. I also had a salad which was great and a scallop appetizer that was divine. The rack of lamb was cooked perfectly and since it was rare was mooing, but I loved it and was informed that the french consider rare a mooing rare. My wife also get a dessert that was something similar to a lava cake with ice cream. There was no doggie bag here. Only two things which disappointed. There wee only three pieces of the Rack of Lamb. A bit expensive for just three pieces. The other was an issue with service. Although it went great during the meal, when we were given the dessert, we felt the we were abandoned by our waitress. We saw her talking to a table for several minutes and then did not look at us, until we had to ask another server to ask the waitress for our check, almost 10-15 minutes after we finished the dessert. Bloomfield is .an upcoming town for restaurants
It was restaurant week, and I wanted to take advantage of the pre fixed menu for $30.00 pp. Plus my daughther works at this restaurant, so I might be a little bias. The food was excellent with the right portion size. It was four people in my group with 3 people ordered the salmon and I ordered the hen.The service was a little slow but overall, we enjoyed our time there. This was by 2nd time being at this resturant.
We wanted to try someplace new and found on Open Table this well-reviewed BYO in a nearby town we'd never eaten in before. We were decided after reading about their wonderful soufflés. Unfortunately for us, they only offer the soufflés on weekends, so we skipped dessert.
I had the wonderful scallops appetizer, which was served with just the right amount of a delicious sauce. My main was the rack of lamb which was tender and very good. Our waitress cautioned me when I ordered them medium-rare, saying that would come with a cool red center (which is rare in my experience) so I changed to medium, which she said would have a warm red center. The lamb was brought to my table medium, with barely a hint of pink. I was not in the mood to deal with sending it back so I ate it and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it.
My husband the crispy calimari salad app. For his main, he had the pepper steak, which was also a very good quality cut of meat and was nicely tender. I've taste better sauce on steak poivre, but he enjoyed it. It was served with truffle fries which needed salt (which we had to ask for since the tables are not set with any) barely tasted of truffle and were rather soft with oil, but we still ate them all.
It wasn't a very busy Tuesday night at the restaurant, yet the servers often were not in the room checking on their tables. We had to wait to signal someone to bring salt and were not asked how our meals were until we were finished, so I didn't bother to mention to our server the way the cook prepared rack of lamb ordered medium. I wondered a few times where they were, wondering if perhaps they were all helping to cook in the kitchen!
We will definitely go again on a weekend night so we can try other tempting menu items as well as the elusive soufflé.
Great food, helpful wait staff but a bit unorganized. We were a party of 4 and 2 of the entrees were cold. So they sent them back and had to wait 25 minutes for the entrees to be returned. It was a little strange to eat my entree while my friend had nothing in front of her to eat. But - even with that, the food is delicious. Especially the soufflé.
We were pleasantly surprised to find this restaurant, since my wife wanted French food. The cuisine was very comparable to NYC, and the service was on point. The ambience was very chic, and very comfortable for a party of two to a large group. The owner was very courteous and very welcoming. You must make it to dessert, as they knock everything out of the ballpark.
It will be on our destinations of choice for French food in NJ.
This is a very nice place to have a special occasion dinner. Although it's a bit pricey, the food is delicious. The one thing I would like to see is some variety with the menu. I have gone here for several years now, and the menu is always the same. Even the couple specials are often the same.
...turns out, i do. this was our second time eating dinner here and i liked it even better the second time round. the food was really good and the service was lovely. i live quite nearby, so i feel like the neighborhood's getting upscale in a nice, unpretentious way. i'd absolutely recommend mes reves to friends.
Me and my date had a great time dining at this restaurant. It was both our first time eating and the food was superb. The waitress even asked how would we like our fish to be cook and I found that to be an A plus courtesy. We never made it to dessert because the starter and main course filled us completely. The only compliant are the tables are situated too close to the other parties' table. I'm not a fan of the elbow to elbow seating. Other than that, I would come again for another pleasurable time.
