Grilled sirloin, green peppercorn brandy sauce
Hand cut to 2 or 3 inches
The atmosphere is fantastic and the service is even better. Not quite a five star review just because I wish the dessert menu was a little more extensive and diverse. Maybe that is just a Covid thing though, which is understandable if that’s the case.
Started with a pre-dinner drink on the rooftop overlooking the city, then had dinner downstairs. Great service, amazing food. Even had a vegan poutine option! We love the classic cocktails and French/European ambience.
Mertens is a cute place with a great wine list....
Food came to us 1 min after cheese cart left.
Delicious French cuisine. Fanastic old fashion cocktail selection. Beautiful early 1900's decor.
My husband I loved the cheese cart and wine selection. The food and service was also fabulous! Great for a special occasion or grabbing a cocktail after work.
Good service. Difficulty with knowledge and slow execution of drinks.
We ordered house wine for dinner for easier presentation. No wine pouring service (strange).
Dover Sole was delicious, cordon Bleu awesome.
Creamed spinach was not so good but caramelized onions were outstanding.
Prefer my escargot in garlic butter, a bit dry and chewy in the shell.
Loved the cheese selections.
Really like the changes to the menu.
Amazing dinner at a great place.
Food was very good, we got the steak and rabbit. The gluten sensitive/free selection here though is pretty limited.
We had excellent service + the new menu & food was delectable. We’re so glad for another upscale steak option in GR. As always, the drinks were great. Can’t wait to go back.
They’re taking COVID seriously with all necessary protocols in place.
Go support our local restaurants + businesses.
Seems to be a hidden gem. Better ambiance, menu, prices and quality than the micro or macro steak chains around town. Support local. In this case, it's a no-brainer.
It's one of the few GR restaurants that is steeped in Grand Rapids history and does it proudly, and is not trying to be Chicago Jr. Great menus too. We were torn on what to order. Went for the Chateaubriand which is a show-stopper. The mushroom side is outrageously good. From cocktail to first course to steak to dessert to the service we couldnt have been happier. Great for special occasions or business dinners.
A steakhouse that's not a chain in GR? Didnt think that's possible. The menu is better than any of them with the many side choices and the poutines particularly exciting for me; a grizzled steakhouse veteran. The drink menus are very unique too. Food and service were flawless. Mertens Prime stands out. Go here.
Unique building, great menus (both food and drink) with lower priced options for both steak and wine. Was able to have two steaks, big carafe of red wine and split a starter for about $100; which is very low for a Grand Rapids steakhouse of this quality. Not that I wouldnt like to get the chteaubriand! It looked awesome. But the low priced options will bring me back here more often.
In a city of very boring looking restaurants, Mertens early 1900s-look stands out. Best combination of ambiance, food and service. I had a sirloin with the Montreal poutine as a side. It was a perfect combination. The Montreal gravy is better than in Montreal. Memo to Mertens: tell your guests to order your poutine as a side for a steak! It was great!
Seriously good. Love the tweaks to the menu. Old Mertens diners will not be disappointed. Great service too.
Chateaubriand was great. There's two options, the center and the end. We got the end. It was awesome. No need to get the center. Bernaise sauce was luscious. Frog legs were a great starter. And glad to see the historical cocktail menu is back.
Incredible service and food! Love the cheese cart. The French touches are still there. The ribeye was amazing. We have a new best steakhouse in town.
Standouts were the escargot (you can tell that they're fresh), frog legs, rabbit dish, filet mignon. The selection of sides is better than any other steak place in town. Great onion rings. Historical cocktail list is pretty cool. Service was a bit green, but it's brand new with a new team so that makes sense. Really I have zero complaints and will be back often.
Just an off night I’m sure
We were excited to try Mertens Steakhouse. We got drinks at the bar to wait for our reservation. It took a while for the bartender to get us drinks, due to apparent short staffing (due to covid I’m assuming). Plenty of cocktail & wine options (although they were out of the house Red wine). We sipped on our drinks at the bar and awaited our table. Our 8:30pm reservation came and went. We ended up getting seated at about 9:15. Once seated, we ordered food and drinks right away. Our waiter was clearly swamped, so it took us 15-20 minutes before we had water and wine. Dinner came at about 10pm. The food was average. I’d definitely had better ratatouille and French fries elsewhere. The service was obviously short staffed, so we were sympathetic, yet still frustrated due to how much we paid. I would not return to Merten’s Steakhouse. Plenty of other decent restaurants in Grand Rapids than this. Hopefully they can figure out how to manage during these trying times for restaurants.
Service was poor, waiter was not knowledgeable of me u, waited for wine for over 40 minutes. Appetizers were gone before wine was even poured. Sad experience was horrible.
We usually love this restaurant. We have never been disappointed. However, this time we ordered the Cordon Bleu and it came to our table overcooked and dry. In addition, I found a little plastic ring in my food. Not ideal. We will definitely try again and hope they are back to their usual standards next time.
Amazing food, everything came out on time, the service was very helpful and polite. Not a single thing I would change or complain about.
The waitress was amazing food was amazing - loved ambience but for some reason our drinks took about 30 min to get then when we ordered another round again. Took 30 min we’re .. not sure what was going on w the bar
Reservation was for 8:30. Sat down 8:40 pm. Ordered drinks and still didn’t have them @ 9 pm. Had to stop the manager walking by to ask about our drinks and she said the bar was backed up because of a party. I stopped the waitress at 9:10 as she hasn’t checked on us and asked her about our drinks. She states the bar is backed up. I tell her that’s not our problem and to cancel our drinks and instead we’d like some wine if that would be quicker. Our food didn’t arrive until after 10 pm and we didn’t leave until 10:45. My wife and I order onion soup, some poutine and one filet to split and were there for two hours! Food was good not great and the waitress did apologize after I voiced my frustration which I appreciated. We were offered a complimentary dessert and a half carafe of wine for our poor experience. This is our second time going to Mertens and will be our last.
We had a rough start waiting 40 minutes for our reservation. The general manager came and offered us a table w/free entrees. From that point on the service was great and thanks mostly to Tony the Manager!
Really enjoyed our recent visit. Restaurant was quiet due to Coronavirus...we visited the Saturday before the big lockdown and shutdown began But service was attentive and friendly and our food was flavorful and fresh. Highly recommend the cheese cart...fun experience and great cheeses.
Food was very good although a couple of items were a bit salty for my taste. The service was excellent. Many interesting food choices. I will go back to try other items on the menu
Was stood up for a first date and ended up meeting someone else at the bar . Love the atmosphere . Great work everyone.
Even with the staff needing to take extra steps due to the current pandemic, we still received amazing service and attention. Our drinks and meal were amazing. Thank you!
Food was great
one of the best dining experiences I've had in a good while, this was the best birthday ever, thank you to the hotel Mertens staff.
We were pleased that they could accommodate a party of 11 on short notice. The ambience is French indeed!
We celebrated my Wife’s birthday with 8 other of our closest friends , sat and ate for about 3 hours and were waited on hand and foot! Great experience ! Thanks for a wonderful memory shared!
Owner was very attentive. Loved the atmosphere and will definitely go back.
This is a great restaurant with an authentic bistro menu other than the obligatory burger. The foie gras was very well prepared as was the coq au vin. Dessert was a little disappointing - the Croquembouche did not have a lot of flavor, but the profiteroles were much better, just not at the same level as the other courses. The wine list was very well designed with some of the usual excellent suspects but also so other very good wine at a great price. The 1920's cocktail menu is excellent. Last, the service was perfect from both the waiter but also the sommelier who was very knowledgeable and had great suggestions for aperitifs and digestives. We will certainly be back.
This place never disappoints. Greeted by friendly staff and the owner, great drink pre-dinner and then an amazing dinner . Top notch service will make us come back often. A must try in GR.
I reserved a table for my out of town guests and they couldn’t wait to leave... nor could I. Our Waitress “ bar manager” was terrible and ruined our evening.
We sat and watched others experience a great time.
I will not recommend this restaurant.
We enjoyed everything about our meals. Coffee was excellent. We didn’t feel rushed at all. It was nice seeing local Michigan wines on the cart and meeting the winemaker. That was a very nice touch. Gave lower marks for ambiance because there were two tables with very loud people. People who need to be that loud belong in a sports bar, not a nice French restaurant.
