   Service was amazing, everyone was helping one another, all servers were very personable, friendly, and attentive. Drinks were fantastic. Without getting into details of every dish; the food just wasn’t worth the price tag.

   Food was great!! I was disappointed that we couldn’t use the rooftop. This is the second time that I’ve tried going here with the intent of using the rooftop after dinner. Both times, the restaurant didn’t email till the day of telling me there was a private event, and the rooftop would be unavailable. More notice would be nice. It feels like they don’t want you to know till the day of so you can’t make other plans. Overall the dining experience that I had was great! The food was all delicious and had great flavor.

   The food was good, the drinks outstanding. Our server was extremely friendly. The issue we had was the pace of service was extremely slow. We don’t mind a slow meal, when it is on pace. We were slow to be greeted at the table. While we were able to get our drink orders promptly, it then was extremely slow to take our food order. By the time we finally were able to give our food order, nearly 45 mins after we were seated, the soup had been sold for the night (we were a 6:30 pm reservation). The meal was good, friendly staff, but we didn’t order dessert or another drink as it was we didn’t get our bill to leave until 9:15pm. Again, we were sat at 6:30pm. Maybe just an off night.

   For a $69 filet I expected it to be cooked correctly, and the dinner was not coursed. Our soup came at the same time as our steaks. The soup was terrible no flavor and it wasn’t even warm. The pasta we ordered was not cooked. It was not a good experience.

   I have been here many times now and I love taking out of towners to Mertens for the Grand Rapids history. And the food is among the best in the city. Our server was great too.

   We enjoyed a Saturday evening dinner followed by a Sunday Mother’s Day brunch at Merten’s! What delicious food and wonderful staff. A huge shout out to Sam! She is a terrific waitress who really has great people skills! Thank you for checking back with us on Saturday to find a spot on the rooftop. It really made our night. Loved seeing the remnants of the old staircase and the fuse box from the earlier years. What a treasure! See you again!

   Very good food, love the story of the hotel. Very echoing so noise level made conversation difficult. Our server was great but pulled in too many directions. I like the continental pace of dining but this was uneven, big gaps between courses. At this price point ($150 per person with appetizers and a moderate priced wine) I was pleased but won’t rush back.

    Nice atmosphere. 50/50 on the service. Food was out quickly, but it we didn't get much service after the food arrived and the bill took a bit to long, got antsy and began wondering what the problem was. Food was great. Mac and cheese was meh.

    I really enjoyed this experience, however our entrees took over an hour to come out to us after ordering. In addition, the service could have been better, and it resulted in loss of profit for the restaurant in that my partner would have ordered more to drink if given an opportunity. The food was good for the most part, and through the reservation we made, we were placed in a really cute booth where we were able to sit next to each other, making it more intimate and romancing.

    Love it here. Great atmosphere, amazing food. And now I always get the same thing. Marrow and Commodore cocktail to start. Ribeye, potato puree for the main. Glass or two of red wine. Bananas foster for dessert. Ribeye is the best in the Midwest. The cut always from the more marbled-end; amazing if you're into marbling. My husband is not into the marbling and gets NY Strip which he is fond of, but due to its size usually cant finish. Makes for a good breakfast though.

    This was the most overpriced underwhelming meal I’ve ever experienced. My server was very good and GM was kind and thoughtful. But the food was just weak. Beet salad - no sweetness in the beets - walnuts salty not sweet - no pretty golden beets. All deep purple - so visually boring. Ribeye - lacking flavor tough & for what is was - ridiculously priced. Dessert & wine were good . Cocktail was poor. If my bill was half - still would have been overpriced. I’m thinking some of the other entrees would have been better. Bottom line they feature steaks but not up to par with a good steakhouse. If in Chicago - Mertons would be out of business in 10 minutes . The bernaise sauce tasted like a mustard sauce. I wouldn’t say don’t go - but I would caution against the steaks for sure. When asked several times how was this how was that I said good, fine . Maybe I should have ragged then and not now .     The restaurant is beautiful. The food is very good. It is also extremely expensive. Therefore, the service should be impeccable and it’s not. We waited a long time just to put in a drink order & to get our food. When it arrived, part of my entree was missing. My husband was overcharged for a drink that was very small to begin with. Some of the bread we received was cold. My wine with subbed with a more expensive wine, even though what I ordered is on the menu. There were too many missteps for what this restaurant charges. Our waitress was pleasant and apologetic but we were left disappointed with our experience overall. Grove is a much better value for a special fine dining meal and has the service to match.

    Mertens was amazing. Arrive was outstanding. Meal was excellent; Moroccan lamb was beautifully done and steak was juicy and executed well. Ambiance was old-school chic. Reception was communicative prior to arrival. We indicated it was our anniversary in Open Table, and everyone greeted us as such. Was really a great experience.

    Pleasant atmosphere, attentive but never over-bearing. Bloody Mary very average, but very good cafe latte and cappuccino. Food served hot, nicely seasoned and balanced portions. Overall a very pleasant experience.

    We went there for lunch and were concerned because we were almost the only people in the restaurant. But the food was amazing. The restaurant is very nice inside, and our server was so friendly and helpful. She told us that they were recently re-opening after the pandemic and that’s why the restaurant was empty.

    Definitey not worth it! Very expensive menu for the quality and atmosphere. The fries had that terrible moldy taste. Even if frozen, they were definitely expired. Pasta were uncooked, unsalted and dry (lacking sauce). I asked for Parmesan or cheese on top, they didn’t have any! My husband ordered a tajine with couscous and it came with something else than couscous that was maybe barley not sure, it was way overcooked and mushy and lacking salt and taste. We are from France but live in Bloomfield, MI and are used to great fine dining restaurants and experiences in Detroit, this was definitely low level, not worth the visit or the price. Also the ambience is terrible. They are missing lights at the back of the room. Our kids could not even draw and write because we had no light at all around our table. Forget it! Find another place. We are trying Margaux tonight! Looks nicer on paper.

    Early dinner. Place was not busy. Slow service for drinks. Food was very good and big portion. We had the scallop and Montreal poutine and mayonnaise eggs which is the deviled eggs.The gravy on the poutine was cold, salty. Deviled eggs were salty. The scallop was delicious. For entree, we had ordered a medium ribeye with a side of wild mushrooms and onions. Both very good, ribeye cooked to perfection. Also had the mushroom pasta. It was very good. For dessert, we just tried their baba rum. The rum was over powering . We just wanted to try it but not worth a $15 dessert. Our drinks took forever, the pink lady was good but my husband didn’t like his Cuban drink and the Rye old fashioned was too sweet. The food overalll was ok. Service slow and disappointing since it wasn’t even busy. We probably won’t go back
