French
Mertens Prime, named a Top 10 restaurant by Grand Rapids Magazine for 2 consecutive years, is a French brasserie and steakhouse set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We offer a variety of French classics along with an impressive French-touched steak menu, including Chateaubriand. The Mertens cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939, and includes the same 50 cocktails served in 1939 that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago. Mertens also operates a Cafe adjacent to Prime. Cafe Mertens offers warm beignets & poutine every day and does not offer table service. The restaurant's rooftop cocktail lounge, Mertens Rooftop, is open seasonally and it is *not* possible to make a reservation for the Rooftop via Mertens Prime.

We arrived around 6pm on a Friday. The restaurant was pretty empty. We were greeted and seated quickly. After ordering drinks we ordered two appetizers the escargot and croquettes. Both were ok. The escargot was semi warm and served with overbaked bread making it hard an inedible. The croquettes were bland along with the sauces Next we're the entrees. A $69 ribeye over cooked and cold. A $40 steak and fries over cooked and the fries looked like something you could get at Coney Island and weren't very warm. We did not stay. We left and dined else why. Do not go here

I read some of the previous reviews so we went in with low expectations. I am one of those people to give a place a chance to fix its mistakes. My wife and I eat out often and have dined in some really great places and I consider myself an amateur chef. We had a gift certificate from our son for a fair amount so we needed to use it. Our server Braydon was very good and attentive. He had a good sense of humor and was very pleasant. Our reservation was for 5:30, we were the 3rd and 4th customers. We left around 7 and I would say there were no more than 20 people in the restaurant. A couple came in and were seated next to us. I’m not sure what they ordered but they did not finish it and I’m not sure that they didn’t walk out. We started with drinks that were very good but we stuck with simple, my wife had a Tito’s and tonic and I had a manhattan. We ordered escargot and bone marrow as apps. The escargot was good but it could have been a bit more garlicky, but wasn’t bad. Where they missed was they served it with day old toasted bagget. They could have used a quick dash in the salamander perhaps. We have had bone marrow in many places, everyone does it different, however it has always been served with the femur bones cut lengthwise, here it was served as the whole bone, standing on the plate. It also had the day old “toast” and sauted onions with basalmic which was good but also the only flavoring, the marrow had no way to have been flavored. My marrow was yellow so I did not finish, my past experience, even at home has never been yellow. My wife had the pork chop, which was good but not super seasoned, and the Brussels sprouts which were very good. I had the cassoulet with osso bucco. It came with 2 large pork hocks (not shanks as most true osso) the key to true osso is to allow the marrow to cook into the veggies it’s cooked with. I did not see any opening in the hocks bones. It needed some flavor. We questioned the decor & cloth napkins, no tablecloths.

Service was terrible. Took us over 2 hours to get our appetizers. Everything we ordered was either bland, overcooked or both. We could’ve made food at home and we could’ve eaten better tasting food and paid less for it

For the price I was very dissatisfied. My steak was very overcooked and our server did not come back to check on us. I was unable to alert the kitchen as I was unwilling to sit there while my family ate and keep us longer waiting on a new steak. After dinner I asked my father how he liked his food and he said it wasn’t very hot so that was disappointing as well. Cocktails really saved dinner so I think I’ll stick to the rooftop bar and cheese cart

We met an employee (not sure if they were a hostess) at the door and told her we had a reservation but were early. She had us wait for a moment then told us to follow her. She took us to a table and left. No other words. We sat there with no water and no acknowledgement for 35 minutes!! Other tables had the same thing happen and they got up and left. We were about to go when my husband grabbed someone walking by and asked if we were going to have a server. He said someone would be with us soon, got us some water and asked if we would like anything from the bar. I said I hadn’t seen a wine list but I’d like a Merlot. My husband ordered a cocktail. He asked us for our order. In the meantime, 55 minutes after we were seated, our actual server showed up with the cheese plate we ordered, which was good. I ordered the beet and chèvre salad and the cassoulet with pork osso bucco. My husband ordered French onion soup and the pork belly. The soup was very good. My salad was good. However, my main arrived and instead of osso bucco I was served confit duck legs. Because we were now in a time crunch I said I’d keep it even though it wasn’t what I ordered. It was awful. There was absolutely no seasoning on the duck and it was quite oily ( which was why I didn’t order duck.) The cassoulet was not really cassoulet. The beans were crunchy, not creamy, and had no flavor. I sent it back and asked to have it removed from the bill. My husband’s pork belly was well cooked but had no seasoning or sauce whatsoever and no accompaniment. The bill arrived and I discovered that my glass of mediocre Merlot was $21! We had a very disappointing meal, celebrating my birthday, no less, and had the privilege of paying $200 for it. The restaurant is for sale and, sadly, it shows. Perhaps new owners will improve the situation, but in the meantime, we would recommend people go elsewhere.

We walked in and waited to see a host for ten minutes. Once seated, we were quickly attended to and put our drink order in. Shortly after they moved us to a different section of the restaurant. We waited another half hour… no one brought our drinks, no one acknowledged us or filled waters. We looked around and noticed many other tables sitting with no food, no drinks, and empty water glasses. They seemed to have plenty of staff but service was the worst I’ve ever seen. We left shortly after. We’ve dined there in the past and it was not bad; will not be back, though.

Our server did a great job! The cheese cart and appetizers were very good. We ordered the large steak for the table to split and it came out medium well instead of medium rare. They fired up another steak and it was better but took another hour between ordering initially. The cherries jubilee flambéed tableside for dessert was fun!

If I could give Mertens Prime less than 1 star, I would. Our reservation was for 3 people at 6:00pm. & we waited 10-15 min. for our table. All 3 of us ordered simple meals, filets with salad & potato. I also ordered French onion soup. Our server moved like a sloth with no personality. I received my soup around 7:00pm. We asked for bread (it was not offered but our food was taking so long he did oblige). When we asked our waiter about our food at 7:35pm, he told us it was going to be about 15 min. Bottom line is, we finally left the restaurant at 7:40pm WITHOUT OUR MEAL!! We had tickets to see a show at 8:00pm & could not wait any longer. You can't make this stuff up. I understand restaurants have difficulty finding quality staff but this was beyond that.

Had reservations for our 5 year anniversary. Service was terrible. I can’t believe we had to pay almost $200 for such a bad meal. We will never be back. We waited an hour for our steaks and they tasted like they had sat under a heat lamp for an hour which they probably did. We’re going to order dessert…. But at that point we had been sitting on the uncomfortable hard wood chairs for so long we just wanted the check and get out of there. We got macaroons to go and when we got home to eat them they were literally the size of a quarter. We were not shocked by this as it just went in line with how the dinner had went. There was zero mention of our anniversary and overall we were extremely disappointed.

We love Mertens, but our visit this time was extremely disappointing. Service was slow (took about 20 minutes to get drinks). Food came out cold and husband medium rare steak came out medium. A second steak came out for my husband about 15 minutes later. Additionally, we ordered a bottle of wine to be served with dinner and the waiter brought it out after I reminded him. We were almost done with our meal. The bathrooms needed attending. Toilet wouldn’t flush and the toilet paper holder was broken. Tissue and towels were on the floor. We spent approximately $800.00 on this meal for 4 people. It was not worth it. And to top it all off, when we complained, it fell on deaf ears. There was no discount offered and few apologies.

Our server, Matt was pleasant, but he was dressed as if he was lounging around the house. Had to ask for a wine cooler for our wine, and when we did receive it, it was put where we could not reach it. Food was good but our leftover container was some sort of gold Chinese takeout container, as soon as we walked out the door, it fell apart, and the food went all over the ground. We came here to celebrate our anniversary where we had our first date. Unfortunately we won’t be back.

We found ourselves incredibly disappointed after reading such great reviews. The pasta was under cooked, steak was under cooked & pork chop was over cooked. Service was slow and our appetizers & entrees came out warm to lukewarm warm. The only two redeeming qualities were the wonderful wine list & Matt’s wine recommendation. We feel we overpaid for a sub par meal & experience.

We had a reservation for four. We ordered drinks at the same time and two of the drinks took 20 minutes and the other two took 45 minutes to arrive. We ordered entrées and sides. They never brought out the sides and we finished the entire meal and did not have any sides. The garlic was not cooked and not able to be eaten. The chicken was dry and the steak was overcooked. It was a very disappointing experience and the manager did discount one round of drinks and the sides from the bill.

First time coming here in the winter and it is a really nice, cozy spot. I guess I have overlooked it bc I usually go here for the Rooftop. The space itself is gorgeous in a very European sort of way. And the French food is great. Price-wise it's not cheap, but it's not nearly as expensive as some others in town. We chose well and didnt spend a lot at all and had a great time.

Not sure what exactly it was but after my girlfriend and I each started with the French Onion soup we both instantly started having an issue with our stomach feelings upset and extremely bloated. We both only ate half of our steaks and side. We both went home and spent the first hour on the toilet before feeling better again. This was my second time here and extremely disappointed compared to the first time at Mertens at last year’s Valentines. Not sure when I will be back.

Beautiful building with just the right lighting. Excellent menu. Part New York-ish feel and part-French feel to everything . I doubt the Leo's crowd would like it here ("Turn up the lights!" "Where's the baked potato with my steak?" they'd crow... sorry, rant against GR-diners over. This is an elegant, authentic trip back in time. Steaks are great, but French items are my preference here. Very homemade.

Both Matt and Elaine were amazing but that’s about as far as it goes. The restaurant smelled it was dark I found it dingy lampshades were crooked seats were terribly uncomfortable regarding the food although my steak was delicious we were not told ahead of time that it was à la cart, and we assumed there would be some sort of side, we were shocked that bread at a French restaurant was not offered.

One of our go-tos in Grand Rapids. Talking to the servers I am going to do my best coming on weekdays in the winter can be slow downtown. I thought I'd mention that here. We love just about everything on the menu; if you like a well-marbled ribeye, try the steak frites. Which is a very fair price. Desserts are awesome here too.

Great ambiance and food. Service good too. Very unique all the way around. If youre used to the sort of very-basic (but good enough!) menus of Leo's or Chophouse or Bowdie's then just stick with steak at Mertens. Because my partner's NY strip was awesome. But for those that dig a little deeper, the cassoulet with the pork shank was out of this world. Bananas Foster amazing too. On one hand with the all the great local history oozing out of the place Mertens is the perfect GR restaurant, then again I can only imagine what the suburbanites thought of the menu when they ate here on Valentines. Anyway, if you like wine and cocktails and food, then go here.

My wife and I had a 9pm reservation for our anniversary dinner. We were seated, and served water. We waited for an hour before the waitress informed us that our appetizers were JUST being made. And it would be another 35 minutes for our dinner. Our entire anniversary dinner was ruined and our plans got pushed back. The restaurant has poor communication, and an insane waiting time. I would 100% recommend this restaurant if you have an unlimited time to wait for food you’ll never get. 0/10

Waited 2 hours total just to get to the main course. Ordered filets and ended up getting ribeye because they were apparently out of filet, never asked us if we were okay with getting ribeye. My date’s ribeye was raw on the inside. We just ended up refusing to eat, big waste of time.

Our first dinner a month ago was great so we returned. Not so good this time. We both ordered the 8oz Filet Mignon, bacon-wrapped w/HERB garlic COMPOUND BUTTER. The steak as serviced on a skillet that was barely warm. The Filet Mignon was not bacon wrapped and the herb garlic compound butter had already set up (was no longer liquid). We made our server aware and he took only one butter at first and we had to point out that both had same issue. He brought back 1/2 melted. The meat was cooked to medium rare as requested but had obviously been sitting for some time before being served. Our server indicated there as cheesecake with a blueberry drizzle on top so we tried it. There as no blueberry drizzle. We both ordered a Cappuccino. Possibly it's just me but I expect a good service to ask if we need a sweetener but I had to ask for it. This is marketed as a high end restaurant. We were disappointed. We had a nice table location but the room we were in has high and seems to be an echo chamber and the room used for large groups. Due to a large group, it was difficult to have a conversation using our normal speaking volume. I supposed this is luck of the draw. We will likely give Mertens another chance because our first dinner there was so great but will ask to be seated on the opposite side of the restaurant next visit to see if it's quieter. Would not go out of my way to recommend based on our last visit. If someone were to ask, I would tell them about both of our visits and to give it a try with an open mind.

We were excited to dine here, but ended up being very disappointed with the service and how long it took to receive our food. Sadly, will not be returning.

We went to mertens to celebrate a milestone birthday with friends. My husband had been wanting to treat himself to a steak- at 7pm- the restaurant was out of steak. This is a steak house? Disappointing. The food was good, ambiance is one of the best in GR, the noise level was great for conversation.

The worst dining experience we have ever had in Grand Rapids. Sad to type this as it used to be our favorite restaurant! Service, food, and drinks have gone completely down hill fast. Will no longer be a patron here.

Great food, drinks and ambience. The service was a bit slow and our main course took about 45 minutes to come out after we ordered, but it was a Friday night. Our server was great and had a really nice presentation of making the cherries jubilee. Jeff also came out to deliver our appetizer and gave us main course recommendations, which we took! He did a great job of going into more detail about a couple of the items and ingredients we weren’t well-versed on.
