We have dined here each year for 7 years. It continues to maintain its high quality of service and magnificent inventive cuisine, even during the pandemic. Last evening, the seating had been reduced but the noise level was still “energetic”.
Nonetheless, our entrees were inventive and high quality. The did not have either the lamb or bone in New York from the menu which was a disappointment to me. They created a special gnocchi with filet mignon and other elements such as mushrooms in a stew like presentation. It was an outstanding adaptation which was very flavorful. All in all a wonderful dinner.

This is our absolute favorite restaurant on the Big Island. The staff is fantastic and the food is so delicious with everything fresh and hyper local. Nice wine list and really delicious cocktails, too.

We had the worst service. We sat at our table for almost an hour and watched people that arrived after us receive their food. When I finally asked the host about it they realized that the cooks never received our order. At a high end restaurant you expect the wait staff to notice things like this. Once the food finally arrived an hour and a half after we got there, it was not very good. The portions were very small. We left there still hungry. They comped 2 ice teas, 1 Bloody Mary and 1 dessert. Would have rather had my food in a timely manner. I had such high hopes for this restaurant and was so disappointed. Will never return.

Based on the reviews I expected a very different lunch. The food was lukewarm at best. It was very good, but not hot. It was unfortunate for the price. I am willing to give it another try at another trip, but for now, it needs a little improvement on the timing and delivery of the food so it is hot.

I had such high expectations for this meal, but everything was so average. The hamachi appetizer vinaigrette was way to sour, almost unpleasant. The mahi mahi with shrimp was fair, but with 2oz of fish and 2 U20 shrimp, it was more a tasting menu portion than an entree. The lamb 2 was was really disappointing. The lamb chops were fine, but the braised lamb was leftover shredded piece of mystery meat. I pointed it out to our server who replace it with another lamp chop. Service was friendly, but rushed. I had an 8pm reservation, and felt like the staff was in an hurry to serve us so they can close down the restaurant. I would not go back. I think it’s a tourist trap.

Our first time at Merriman's, although it came highly recommended by our daughter who is something of a foodie. Easy to get to in Waimea, although the drive up from the coast is filled with curves. We were seated promptly at a nice table in a corner away from other diners (COVID precautions still in effect).
The menu has something for just about everyone. We started with their famous Mai Tais For our entrees, we decided on the fish of the day, which was grilled mahi with garlic mashed, some broccolini, and a citrus relish. We started with the tomato bisque soup and finished by sharing the molten chocolate purse, which was to die for. A great dining experience. Reservations required and somewhat pricey, but worth it in our estimation.

So glad we booked Merriman’s. It was well worth the half hour drive. We were running late, and they held our table for 20 minutes. Everyone was super friendly, from the host and hostess, to our server, to the bussers. The host and hostess made it a point to stop by our table and interact with our young kids.

Food was exceptional. I had the Ahi, which had excellent texture and flavor. My husband had the pistachio-crusted mahi-mahi with jalapeño mashed potatoes; he said he doesn’t always love mahi, but this was amazing. Both kiddos had the buttered noodles and finished their entire dish, which is a rarity for them to eat everything. Dessert was spectacular. We order the lilikoi mousse and coconut creme brûlée. Shout out for the mocktails. The homemade ginger ale was the best I ever had!

If we get a chance this trip, we’ll return to Merriman’s for lunch. Our entire experience was positive and enjoyable.

We had been on the Big Island several times without eating at Merriman’s. We decided this trip was it. We could only get reservations for lunch, but that worked okay for our schedule. We have eaten at both Monkeypod and Moku Kitchen on Oahu and tried the lilikoi foam mai tai. So, for comparison, I ordered it here. It’s a better mai tai, more balanced than we’ve had at the other two restaurants - and we had tested one at Moku just a few days before to be sure!

We like to try several things and “share” to some degree. Hubby ordered the Mexican corn and the fish sandwich while I had the soup of the day (potato leek w/bacon) and pork saimin. All were absolutely amazing. Tasty and perfectly prepared. I could drink gallons of the saimin broth or simply choose to eat some of that deep, savory soup daily. The fish was flaky and flavorful without too much “stuff” on the sandwich to cover it up.

And dessert, of course. Pumpkin cheesecake that may be the best cheesecake I’ve ever eaten - fluffy and light and flavorful. The coconut creme brûlée was gorgeous. I used to work for a woman who I thought made the perfect egg custard. Either she’s been reincarnated or unseated from her throne. BIG lunch, great lunch!

It’s all about the food and it’s preparation which is nothing short of exceptional, original, and most tasty. A placard in the vestibule quotes it’s founder as saying his most admired are fellow farmers. This is their secret … directly from the farm to the table. Special.

Went for lunch...had my usual...Saimen and ginger martini. So delicious. Saimen is a broth, noodle, veggies and roast pork dish. Broth and pork are super flavorful. Try it...it is the best I've had.

Smallest portions ever. A real insult. My wife ordered the lamb chop and received one lamb chop with two bones. Literally, it was one average bite. It was served over some shredded lamb. Are you kidding me ? For $51 we expected a decent piece of lamb, at least 2-3 bites. Let's start from the beginning. Could not get dinner reservations, finally was able to book the last seating on 10/18. Staff all very nice but by no means a professional wait staff. Issues with water being replenished, forgetting to bring items to table i.e. knife, more sauce, etc.

We ordered the shrimp appetizer, 4 nice sized shrimps, very tasty. I ordered the Mahi Mahi encrusted in mac nuts. Fish was dry. I asked for more sauce and am still waiting. Portion was small but certainly more plentiful than the lamb. Fish was tasty.

Desserts were tasty wife had liliquoi mousse and I was brought a chocolate flourless thing, very good, it was complimentary. We also had a bottle of wine, Freiss, which was good, $51.

Our bill with tip and tax was approximately $280. Again food was good, not great, ridiculously overpriced for portion sized and the dining room is a non descript room with little art or ambience overlooking a parking lot on all sides.

Obviously Merrimans is now a brand so they are now catering to a clientele who obviously doesn't care. If you're ok with the above, go check it out. It's a pain in the neck to get to so you must be committed to getting there and grossly overpaying. We won't go back.

Why would you advertise as a farm to table, healthy food option type of place and serve corn fed beef and coke products ? You cant find grass fed beef or healthier soda options without high fructose syrup? Very puzzling.

A better option is Browns Beach House at the Fairmont. Food is better with a trillion dollar view and impeccable service. Portions are larger. Price is similar or slightly less. Difficult to get reservations, so book early.

Excellent meal! Service was perfect. Desserts were exceptional!

Due to the location at a higher altitude and the restaurant’s attempt to maximize air circulation due to Covid, it was a little chilly inside. Bring a light sweater and have the hot soup of the day. You’ll be fine.

Merrimans never fails to please! The food is amazing! I’m not so sure that Merrimans would be the same without their exceptional staff. They know the entres and do an excellent job explaining the ingredients, how it is prepared and where they are from. Every dish is served in a timely manner with professionalism. Their staff are just the best, you can tell they take their job seriously and enjoy every minute!

We have been parties as many as 12 and yesterday it was 8. Every visit has been wonderful. For decades we have always favored Hali’imaile General Store on Maui and recently your’s too! We were part of the increased noise level because we enjoy your Big Island hospitality so very much; it’s like home!
