Merriman's – Waimea – Big Island Ratings and Reviews
Used to be our go to place for dining when visiting the Big Island. Some trips would visit twice in a week. Will have to re-think that based upon last two experienced. To say the least, felt like primary objective of restaurant is to turn tables. If I wanted to get in and out in 45 minutes rather go to Denny’s and not drop $200 on dinner for two.
Our servers tag teamed us. Who ever had a free second swooped in. 3 different servers.
Meal went like this.
1. We were seated and handed menus
2. Within 2-3 minutes Server 1 took drink orders. No problem with that
3. In 5 minutes drinks were served by server 1
4. After two sips, server 2 appeared and asked if we had any questions about the menu. No mention of soup de jour, fresh catch, or any other features. Felt like if we didn’t ask would never know.
5. Skipping details, one other server later, it had been 40 minutes since we entered the restaurant, and we were wrapping up our dinner. Trying to slow the process down, I put my fork down for a moment, and tried to see if we could make it an hour before finishing. Within seconds, while I was still chewing and with food on my plate, a staff member asked if he could take my plate. I had to finish chewing before I could tell him not yet.
6. Dinner plates removed and dessert ordered. Crisp aka mode. Came within the time needed to heat up and slap a scoop of ice cream on top
7. Two bites in, we were asked if we needed anything else, and we said “no” , we were good.
8. In a blink, my check was on the table.
We did tell our server we felt like we were being rushed. She took desert off our check and said it was management policy to bring check before desert was finished
9. With tip, spent $190 and put the door in about 1 hour and 10 minutes, only because we stretched it out.
All told we spent more time in the car going and returning than actually eating there.
Not a good experience.
Friendly and efficient service. We were seated quickly and greeted by our waitress and received our cocktail and wine. Food outstanding! We shared the special Lobster Pot Pie as appetizer. Entrees were Ahi, fresh and melted in my mouth and the Fish of the Day - AMAZING! Caution a bit of a drive inland so watch the alcohol intake.
Really great place if you are in weimea. The food was delicious and not crazy expensive. I had the local filet and it was as tender as the poke we had to start the meal. My wife’s fish of the day was also tender and moist. It is pretty loud inside so bring your energy and have a few cocktails to start!
I had high hopes for this restaurant based on previous reviews. We planned our entire day around our dinner here and left disappointed. My husband ordered the lobster which was not very sweet nor tasty. I ordered the fresh catch which was coupled with prawns that were overcooked. I sent them back and they were quickly replaced with two more overcooked prawns. Since we were still adjusting to the time difference I did not complain, I merely left so that I could go to bed. Although I can see the potential of this restaurant, it will not be on my list of places when I return. The lettuce for the salad‘s were fresh and the service was excellent, so there’s that.
Our lunch at Merriman's was by far the best meal we have had on the island. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, reasonably priced considering how expensive food is in Hawaii. I had the homemade ginger ale and it was terrific for lunch. The service was exceptionally good. We would definitely go back if we ever return to the island and appreciate the recommendation from friends.
This is my favorite restaurant on the Big Island! Our dinner was amazing, the staff is outstanding and we were welcomed at the front door by the nicest host.
Our meal was completed with their famous coconut creme brûlée! If haven’t dined here it is a must.
Thank you Merrimans for a lovely evening!
Service & food were outstanding!! My brother’s birthday was the night we went, but he was back in Texas, so I had them do a “happy birthday” writing on our dessert. Omg! They exceeded my expectations! They stenciled out with, what looked like, shaved chocolate “Hau’oli Lā Hānau” (happy birthday in Hawaiian language)
Both dinner & dessert entrees were too beautiful to eat! ❤️ If I’m ever in Hawaii again, I will definitely be returning for dinner!
Would upload pictures of our experience but the files are too big 😭
Excellent meal at lunch time. We focused on menu items that fully utilized locally sourced ingredients - especially vegetables. We all started with the soup of the day which was a tomato bisque. It was not vegetarian but they told us this prior to ordering. It was delicious with a slight kick to it. I then had the garden salad that was all from local growers. The vegetables had amazing flavor. It is hard to find good produce in the grocery stores here so it was nice to have such delicious veg. I decided to add the Mahi Mahi for some protein and it was perfectly, and simply cooked. There are plenty of meat options for the carnivores as well. It is relatively expensive but then what isn't on the Big Island? Well worth the cost for a nice meal out and we will go back.
Magnificent!! We selected the “tasting menu” for four and it was one of our top five dinners that we have ever experienced. Outstanding flavor, wonderful variety , excellent service and generous portions. Truly a gourmet “farm to table” dinner. This will be at the top of our list when we return to Hawaii.
Merriman's does not disappoint. Service is impeccable & food presentation & flavor can't be beat. In this case...you really do get what you pay for. The Ahi Poke app was delicious as was the tomato bisque soup, although very salty. Salads were very nice. Entrees delicious, Wok Ahi, a generous portion and the Red Snapper with prawns. The jalapeno sauce was outstanding. Shared a very small Chocolate dessert that was excellent.
We drove from the Kona Coast to Waimea in large part to experience Merriman’s based on a friend’s recommendation. The restaurant did not disappoint. From the moment we were seated, every detail was perfect. Our server graciously and patiently answered all our questions and helped us make our selections, which were beautifully presented and delicious. We especially enjoyed the Chocolate Purse dessert and the Kona coffee. We will be back!
Sterling service, great ambiance, and top - notch, inventive food continue to keep Merrimans at the top of the list of all restaurants on the Big Island. Lots of little touchs add up to a superb dining experience, worth the drive from Kailua Kona, or anywhere on the Island.
We had an excellent kimchi flavored shrimp appetizer, and fish and steak entrees, both very nice. The highlite though was the chocolate in pastry dessert. Fabulous quality chocolate, in a filo-like pastry "bag", accompanied by a vanilla bean ice cream. Wanted a second helping, but my wife suggested otherwise.
