Merriman's – Waimea – Big Island Ratings and Reviews
Have had lunch at Merriman’s on the Big Island a couple of times in the past few years when visiting. Food, service, ambiance, all good; but, relies on the name rather than offering a creative and diverse menu and great service. As such, you’ll be getting a “good” dining experience; but, paying for what should be a “great” experience - overall 3 stars - good; but, nothing special.
We have been to Merriman's before and have always enjoyed the food and the creativity and use of locally grown fresh vegetables. We remembered the restaurant being a little more rustic from our last visit 13 years ago, but we enjoyed the upgrade.
It was a challenge finding parking which we thought was peculiar.
Nevertheless, we had a lovely meal and enjoyed some relaxed family time .
Server was nice but needs to learn more of their wine menu, does not know that they're selling rose by the glass and so on... lol
Food are locally produced & they're fresh yet the portion was a lil less. The goat cheese strawberry salad definitely needs 3x the amount of strawberry in the serving. The greens was too sour & more strawberry/sweetness balances it, they only put 1 sliced strawberry on it :) . Nice and cool spot. The bus was fast & good though, ambiance was okay.
We saved Merriman's for our last day on the Island, only wish we had gone there first. What a lovely location, great food and fantastic service. We'll go there first next time. Both of our meals were outstanding and the service was very nice, she was attentive and took care of all our needs.
Been to every merrimans in Hawaii and every time it’s my best meal of our trip. They do drinks better than anyone (the mai Tia’s are so freaking good) and the food is absolutely wonderful. The cost of the food is 100% worth it because they do everything the right way. Thanks!
Merriman's is the best restaurant on the Big Island, period. Our waiter, Jim, was excellent; he recommended a great Pinot Noir that went well with the lamb chops as well as the well prepared monchong. The cesar salad had a slice of fried green tomato instead of croutons, great add. We were there on 12/6/17, my wife's birthday and they brought a chocolate decadence desert with a candle for her. I could write more, but it is the best.
Me and my husband had multiple people tell us we had to try merrimans. Next to last day we drove up in the evening for a late dinner. It did not disappoint. Fresh bread, cocktails and wine were quick to arrive. Waiter sold us on 2 specials salmon with prawns, romanescu and polenta and the lamb 2 ways. Both were delicious and we had a small shared dessert of pineapple and strawberry crumble with ice cream. Fabulous dinner to end our trip. Thank you.
Fantastic meal.... service was impeccable .... can not wait to visit again .... ahi was perfect!!! Grass fed filet was like butter .... the trio dessert platter were all phenomenal.... we ordered the chocolate purse... bread pudding and pineapple and strawberry crisp.... the staff was not only excellent but show so much pride in their restaurant
Amazing food and excellent service make this restaurant truly enjoyable. The mahi mahi dish is an incredible dish, and they offer the opportunity to have small versions of two dishes for a reasonable price. The focus on local food and sustainability is also a plus.
We arrived somewhat earlier than our reservation and greeted by a friendly host who got us a table immediately despite being too early. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable although he kept referring to me as ‘young lady.’ This was somewhat off putting as I am not of an age that would be considered young, so it had somewhat of a condescending feel to it. It would be well to consider that older people do not enjoy being referred to as ‘dear,’ ‘honey,’ etc. just because they have a bit more experience in the world. Treat us as you would anyone else and skip the labels, please.
The food was excellent as well as our wine choice and cocktails before dinner.
Thank you for another enjoyable dining experience.
They have been doing local farm to table before it was popular. Deliciously fresh. Hawaiian flair in every dish & cocktail. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Our first time here was over 20 yrs ago on our wedding night. Every time we come back, it is consistently delicious & worth the trip from the mainland. Merrimans keeps us coming back to the Big Island to relax & celebrate the flavor of this island.
Overall an excellent experience. We’ve been to this restaurant and the Merrimans on Kauai and Maui. We started with tomatoes with blue cheese and crunchy capers. Very tasty. My partner and I both did the meal with one fish and one meat. My partner had pink snapper (opakapaka) which was incredibly delicious and a filet which was cooked nicely but a little tough. I had ahi and lamb. The ahi was great and the leg of lamb a little tough and not as flavorful as I has hoped. We had a pineapple and strawberry crisp which was pretty tasty.
Bottom line: stick to the fresh produce and fish.
Have been going for Thanksgiving dinner for several years now. Merriman's is a high end restaurant and the food is excellent and service top notch. It is expensive make no mistake. When the bill arrived there was a statement say there is a 2 percent kitchen staff surcharge. This was not stated on the evenings menu... I do not have an issue tipping well, but this just upset me... and the note about the surcharge was followed by a statement of 'Do the right thing'.
I would suggest the doing the right thing would be to pay your staff properly in the first place and not to charge your customers a 'surcharge' to do this. Frankly it is not about the money but the method. Will there be a 'plate and napkin' surcharge next. It was very poor form and badly executed.
The pity of this is, this is one of my favorite places to eat on the Big Island... but now they have lost a customer.
One of the best Thanksgiving dinners I have ever had. Food was fresh and fabulous, the service was impeccable. They know what to do with food here and they do it very well. They even sent diners home with Turkey sandwiches ; nice touch and very good as well. Next time I am on Hawaii Island, I will return to Merriman's.
