Merriman's – Waimea – Big Island Ratings and Reviews
My favorite restaurant in all of Hawaii. Charming sophisticated, but not ostentatious dining room. Well worth the 1/2 hour drive from Kona resorts. I visit the Big Island once a year and make sure I visit Merriman's twice each visit. I have never had a meal there that was not outstanding. Fresh, local ingredients. Fish or meat dishes are both fantastic. Excellent wine list.
We spend a lot of time on the Big Island and we’d heard it was the best food here. We would agree with that but the noise level made it very uncomfortable, likely more uncomfortable than we’ve ever experienced . We are not normally bothered by noise. Our 11 year old said it was like a Seahawks game. Service was excellent and quick thankfully, but they clearly do not care about the noise issue, even when we mentioned it at the end. They cram about 3 times the people they should in a small space and it works for them. They fill it and they make money.
The last time I went to Merriman’s was in 2006. They updated the look of the restaurant and made it capable of seating more people. This is great for getting a table more easily; however, the noise level increased significantly. The increased volume is my only complaint and I would recommend adding tapestries or something along the walls to dampen the sound. The food and service were amazing. I wish I had time for a second dinner here before my trip ends, but I’m sure I’ll be back next year!
Peter Merriman is the Alice Waters of Hawaii. 30 years ago, he was amongst the first island-based chefs to emphasize local ingredients cooked with multi-cultural influences. Even today, in this town of 10,000, this kitchen produces what's arguably the best food on the island of Hawaii. It isn't always as consistent as it could be, nor are the beef and lamb as local as they could be, but we're always happy to eat there.
It was Frank Family vineyard night for us as the most affordable nice chardonnay cost $59 and the cabernet cost $89. Party of 6 had 2 chards and one cab, as 2 of us had the grass fed filet ( 8oz.) and awesome I might add, while one had the leg of lamb and rack of lamb, and the other two macadamia crusted Kampachi and the special fish plus 2 Kauai shrimp.
Everyone was so happy with their entrees and wine, and the salads were amazing too, arugula and goat cheese and the caprese with goat since they were out of mozzarella...all very delectable!
I’ve been going to Merriman’s for the past 8 years. This meal was by the best over that time period. A perfectly prepared fish with sauces, macadamia rice and collard greens that mixed perfectly and flavor fully together.
My only piece of advice for the staff is to slow things down a bit. They were very nice and eager but we moved from sitting down to a cocktail, appetizer and main way too quickly. We were done with dinner just over an hour after sitting down and there didn’t seem to be a lineup of people waiting for tables.
Wonderful experience at Merrimans. The quality of the meals, local sourced ingredients, and preparation was second to none on the island. Fantastic meal, all the way around. Steak, fish and poke were great. Expensive, relative to our other 2 favorite places, but we will return to Merrimans in a couple of days because we enjoyed it so much.
We had a wonderful lunch here. The restaurant was busy, but we got in right at 12:30, which is when we had our reservation.
All of the food here was amazing, including the broccolini soup with white cheddar cheese. I had the halua pork saimin noodles and my husband had the cheeseburger and an order of the Yukon gold potatoes. He also ordered the bread pudding, which our waiter told us upon asking him if it was good, that if we didn't like it, he would eat it. Good enough recommendation for us! There are very few times when everything that you order is good, but this restaurant is the exception. Wish we could go back for dinner!
The food was delicious and our server, Alyssa, was top notch. We had the kahlua pork quesadilla, the goat cheese salad and the arugula salad. The pork was wonderfully smoky and lean, and the salad greens were incredibly fresh. For dessert, we had the bread pudding which was closely akin to a pineapple upside cake. Amazing!
The food quality lived up to the reputation. Wonderful, casual space that was not cramped, and welcoming for serious foodies and those who also have children. The menu was diverse and the ingredients all generated by the chef/owner. Lunch was a great value, and perfect if you have kids. Overall, the family was happy with our decision to take time from amazing weather in Mauna Lani to have our best meal of the trip.
Merriman's in Waimea is one of the best restaurants. The service is spot on. The daily fish specials never disappoint. The only "complaints" we had with this visit were that the noise level was quite high. It's very hard to hold a conversation without feeling like you have to raise your voice. It's always been a busy and energetic restaurant but on the night we dined the noise level seemed at an all time high and was quite deafening at times. Also, our favorite side dish the upcountry corn was not available at this time. There is so much variety on this menu and there is something to please the meat, seafood, and vegetarian appetites. Save room for dessert. The coconut creme brulee is amazing.
Always the best choice on the Big Island. Whenever we come to Hawaii for vacation, we book several dates in advance. Their holiday pre-fixe meals are wonderful. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Can’t imagine a visit without a couple of meals at Merriman’s. John and the team there are fantastic!!!
We had a great experience. Jessica, our server, was excellent. She was friendly, effective, and knowledgeable. Our only concern during the meal was that one in our party had rice that wasn't as hot as he would have liked it. Jessica was very prompt in bringing sufficiently hot rice to replace it. Our only hesitation in recommending Merriman's in Waimea is that we might be making it even more popular than it is and so more difficult to get a table next time we'd like to eat there.
