Merriman's – Waimea – Big Island
The service was excellent. However the food quality was disappointing. The Pad Thai was overcooked and over seasoned/spicey. The grilled fish was ok but have had better in the past. Overall, disappointed with the food. Also, time to change up the menu. Thank you
This restaurant is coasting on it's reputation. The food was over-salted, the ambience chaotic and the service abysmal. We waited one and one half hour between salad and entree. There was a tour bus being served and the kitchen was over- whelmed. we were under whelmed. No thanks...
Excellent food. The best restaurant on the island
Oustanding food and service; friendly, professioal staff. Merriman's is our "go-to" restaurant for special occasions.
Party of 4 -- friends visiting from SF.
Opened with clams, kalua quesadillas and mushrooms, then entrees of ahi (2) and filet mignon (2). Capped with coconut creme bruise, apple-strawberry cobbler and Kona coffee. A great evening enjoyed by all with compliments around the table regarding the food.
See my YELP review too. So disappointing. We flew from LA to celebrate a birthday and while we have always enjoyed lunch at MERRIMANS - dinner was way off the mark. Dried out opakapaka. Ahí entree that was uninventive and could have been served anywhere else on the island for a third of the price. Amazing service as always but for a special occasion being jammed in the corner by the water service station was a bummer too. We left so disappointed wishing we had stayed at the Four Seasons and saved 2 hours of drive time instead of wasting our time and money at MERRIMANS.
Loved every moment! Chantel our server, was awesome and gave us a few recommendations. We had the hummus for appetizers. We ordered the kampachi, the filet steak and the the pan chicken. So good! All dishes we highly recommend. For dessert, we shared the creme brulee.
Our family was looking forward to have dinner with the wonderful experience of lunch there the day before, but I had accidentally booked it for a day after but Merriman’s Maitre d’ graciously gave us the same eve dinner reservation provided we came there in 20 mins.
My kids had meanwhile excitedly planned their dishes by looking at the Dinner menu online. Natalee was a wonderful hostess and explained the menu with utmost grace and care.
We had the New York Steak, Lamb, Fish of the day and soup for dinner and later the coconut creme brûlée does dessert.
Each of those dishes were cooked to perfection and were given the seal of approval by my kids :), who are big time foodies and discern well between ordinary and exceptional cooking.
Overall we highly recommend and will come back there again and again whenever we visit Big Island.
Absolutely excellent food. The service was Outstanding timely, helpful with the menu and very friendly
It’s always a treat to eat here. There was four of us and we kinda went in different directions. Our friends that have never eaten here went very traditional and ordered a salad and a fish entree each and loved the way everything was prepared. My wife and I treated tonight as a Tapas type dinner and really tried and shared everything on the appetizer menu. We had the goat cheese and arugula salad with strawberries, pasta appetizer, the Clams in a wine sauce. And a side of the Hamakua mushrooms which are unbelievable. This was a full meal for us both. Our server amiko spelling may be incorrect was the best she was sweet informative and attentive. The corkage fee is a bit steep we brought our own Cakebread wine. $37 but we still had a few signature cocktails also. All around a great night with friends
Admitted food picky and regional.farm and garden near supplies abound in Bay Area for us. This said, we LOVE Merrimans. We will.be back! Great service, presentation, superb wine menu.
Unbelievably great food and service! Will be back again next time I’m on the Big Island.
Always great food , great service and great atmosphere. Been dining there every year since Peter first opened the restaurant....
One of the five best meals in the last 10 years. Excellent service and support. Superb cocktails. But the best part was the quality and design of the food choices. Israeli salad was exceptional but even surpassed by the chicken cooked in a skillet and the ahi with citrus slaw. Anyone visiting the big island who doesn’t eat at merrimans is missing out on a fantastic experience.
Food was excellent. Leila our hostess was exceptional and gracious in her service.
Our food was amazing and we all are going there today as well!
We enjoyed a perfect sunset dining experience at Merriman's. Perfect waitstaff timing. The local beef was what I went there for and the filet was excellent. Well aged, great char, and buttery. Hope to return every time we are on the Big Island.
Amazing dining experience while on the island! Enjoyed the poke, the half portions of the catch of the day and the filet and the special of the day!
Good food, small portions. Excellent service. Would return
We have dined here before but during this visit they were hosting a large tour group. Nonetheless we had exceptional food and service. Always a pleasure and a treat. Mahalo ❤️
A bus load of tourists arrived during our dinner and it was very loud.
Great, everything was very good.
Always great food and service. It was our first time having lunch there. We have been there many times for dinner. The menu had some great choices. Will definitely return.
It was a wonderful evening in celebration of our anniversary and the tenth time we have had the pleasure of dining at one of the Merriman’s restaurants.
Service was impeccable, food outstanding and overall experience a delight.
Fish overcooked. Very dry. We mentioned this to our server.
Our server Malia made our first anniversary very special! The food was delicious. Malia picked a great wine that paired really well with our dishes. We will definitely return for another stay-cation celebration.
For food lovers, this a must try! Great food, locally grown, great wine list! The service was wonderful! It is a smaller restaurant that is very popular. It can be noisy, but we had a great table location. I have been many times before and will return again!
Your servers are amazing.
The noise level is unfortunate, it makes conversation almost impossible.
The food is very good. Rich and salty but delicious.
Fabulous fresh food. Well worth a drive to Waimea. Best chocolate dessert I’ve ever had.
We had a fantastic experience at Merriman’s. All the food was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The service staff were very knowledgeable in each ingredient, whether is was what farm the vegetables came from to where the fish was caught - The farmers and fishermen should be so proud! We ordered a lot of food - cavatelli pasta, that wasn’t quite cavatelli shaped but still delicious. The clams with a broth so delicious I wanted to drink the broth in a cup. The tomato salad with fried capers, and we also had the fish of the day and the butchers cup which I believe was filet mignon. We were debating on ordering two half portions for the entrees. Our sever suggested it wouldn’t be enough food. We ended up taking half the steak home for breakfast in the morning. For dessert we also tried the bread pudding and the lilikoi mousse and a pot of Kona coffee. Everything tasted so good. This was a nice meal highly recommend for a special occasion. They also have a very nice wine list. We had cocktails instead of wine.
We went here for our anniversary, and the ambiance was perfect. The food was good, but not great- and perhaps we had high expectations given the reputation. But the lobster salad was 80% guacamole and very little lobster, and the warm goat cheese salad was more strawberry than cheese, and didn’t make much sense. The desserts were the best part for sure, and lilikoi mousse was perfect. Server was pushy with alcohol and seemed annoyed when I told him I don’t drink. Perhaps we are spoiled by California dining, but this place seemed overpriced for the quality to be honest.
Always a treat to eat there! The ambiance is wonderful, food great & service good as well!
An island farm to table pioneer restaurant let down by line chefs who don't taste the food they cook. The ingredients are as good as they come so what's with tablespoons of salt when a sprinkle will do? Great local menu and a massively improved wines by the glass list. Not as good as it could be.
Was great, great service, very helpful & accomodating. Food was great, wine was too. The shrimp app was fantastic!! Great atmosphere, chill and laid back. Will definitely go again.
What a wonderful little gem. First time at Merriman’s, I’ll be back again soon.
Always a winner.. best soup in Hawaii.. great lunch menu. Fresh farm to table approach. Great spot.
Still the best restaurant on the Big Island! We loved it so much we’re going back before we head home.
We were advised to visit Merriman's in Waimea and couldn't have been happier that we did! My fiance and I came to the big island for the first time this past September and Merriman's was 100%, one of our top two favorite places to eat on the island! (So much so, we went back again in the short two weeks we were there). At our first visit, we shared the Kailua pork quesadilla (got it again the second time, AMAZING) with kimchee and a spicy sauce. SO GREAT! We also had the house made ginger ale, which was to die for. I got the fresh fish, and my fiance got the fish tacos the first time. The second time I got the mac nut crusted Kampachi and he got the burger. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was amazing. We finished with a chocolate purse (again, we got this the second time around as well. TALK ABOUT DECADENT!) Chris was our waiter, and even though we had only met him once, he remembered us! Down to details about my graduate degree and everything. We have never felt more satisfied OR more at home than we did during out outings at Merrimans. 100% recommend!!!
Great food with excellent service. Had some unexpected visitors try to dine with us, but it was a momentary distraction that was handled well my the waitstaff and floor manager. All in all, they have a creative menu that is executed to perfection and is well worth the drive up to Waimea.
A must dinner venue for a visit to the Island
Our server, Emiko, was great. Very nice experience. We were also surprised with a Kamaaina discount, which made us feel like we made the right choice to celebrate the birthday girl at Merriman's!
Awesome place with awesome service! You can't go wrong here.
