Chef-Owner Peter Merriman has brought his unique style of Hawaiian Regional Cuisine served in a casual yet elegant setting of Old Hawaii Plantation. A pioneer in the "Farm to Table" concept, Peter serves only the freshest products, at least 90% of which are locally grown or caught, using only sustainable methods. They’ve been able to make accommodations to continue to stay open during the restrictions in Hawaii. More casual than in the past. No white table cloths. The food and the service make up for the changes. Excited that they’ve been able to reopen.

Made reservations for our anniversary on a rainy Wednesday night. When we got there, host tried to sit us at a table next to the bar and to the entrance. I asked if we could be closer to the other side, which was more open and had a great view. She said there was none available but could sit us at a booth. On our way to our booth, saw a couple leave a table by the window, and I asked the host if we could have that table. She said it’ll take too long to clean and sanitize and we should just sit at the booth. The booth we were seated at was next to another booth with the lady’s back very close to my husband’s back. My husband didn’t want to complain, so we just sat and ordered. We had the ceviche with kanpachi. Fresh and good. Macnut crusted ono for me and NY steak for him. Both tasty. We had 4 drinks total. Paid around $150 for our meal. Food was good but the service felt rushed. My husband was almost done with his steak before his second drink finally came. And the ambiance wasn’t that special since we were facing the bar and the center of the room. I had chosen Merriman’s because of the pictures I saw online but we probably should’ve just gone next door to Eating House 1849.

Merriman’s is a wonderful Hawaiian group of restaurants that are consistently a good dining experience. On the Island of Kauai, this particular Merriman’s is only offering a limited, rather odd election menu. The “signature”items are missing. As the dining establishments attempt to reopen-some have been closed 8 MONTHS-they are offering a more limited menu. At this point, few restaurants have changed their menus on their websites.
I encourage visitors to support the restaurants not just on the Islands of Hawaii but everywhere across the country. These folks have been punished for too long and deserve a chance to operate businesses they have saved for and worked at all of their careers. I wish all of these folks the very best.

We love Monkeypod Kitchen on Oahu and Maui, so we felt we needed to try sister restaurant, Merriman’s on Kauai. While we definitely prefer Monkeypod, Merriman’s was just OK in every respect. The food was OK, the service was OK, the ambience was OK. It may be unfair to judge it now in the times of COVID, because they had been closed for 7 months are now trying to figure things out with increased distancing and safety measures. But we’ve eaten at a half dozen similar places this week, and most of them blew us away. So there’s some room for improvement here for sure. That’s said, we didn’t find our food or experience unenjoyable, just not spectacular as we had expected.

Food was great but portions very small. Shrimps not de-veined. Service marginal and menu very limited in both food and drinks. We were seated by an open window and there were half a dozen gnats swimming in our wine before we could finish the first glass.

The prime rib and locally caught fish was good. Do not get the lobster and crab cake appetizer. It cost $22.00 for 2! And it was just OK. The service was great!

Our server was Aubrey (or Audrey ?). She was warm, gracious, welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu and specials. We both enjoyed a vodka martini served “up”. They were freshly shaken and delivered promptly so they stayed nice and cold during appetizer and salad. This is a testament about Aubrey’s attention to detail.

The Caesar salad with butter lettuce and fried baby green tomatoes was a very pleasant surprise; the dressing was creamy but not heavy and bright with lemon. The crab/lobster cakes were loaded with delicious crustacean flavors; I could not detect any filler and the crispy crust was perfect with the moist interior. Then there were the entres. I chose the fresh catch of the day which was macadamia crusted mong Chong served over brown jasmine rice wish local squash cooked al dente. My fish was perfectly prepared cooked, just enough and in no way over cooked. My partner elected to try the tempura fish and chips. His fish was ono and again, perfectly cooked, the tempura was crispy which complimented the moist delicate flavor of the ono. Then there were the truffle garlic fries — how and crispy exterior with creamy potato interior. Each bite of a fry started with truffle and finished with garlic — delicious.

We shared a house-made ice cream bar which we could have easily done without. I’m sorry to say, it was un-remarkable but that could have easily been because the rest of the meal was plentiful and absolutely outstanding!

We will definitely return!

Food was good, fresh and prepared well. This restaurant is dependable and focuses on quality. I have always found issue with the inability to be seated early at your table when there is clearly availability. I had a 6pm reservation and several tables for 2 were open but they sat us at a non standard table (which we agreed on south at we could eat early). This has happened before but when it comes to the food, they deliver.

We had gone to Merriman's in Kaanapali, Maui during our honeymoon last November. When we came to Kauai for our one year anniversary, we were eager to try Merriman's pop-up grill @ Fish House. The vibe is much more casual, and the ambiance is relaxed. Views are wonderful, especially if you can get a seat along the perimeter with a direct view of the sunset. Service is also casual, yet efficient. We had two specials, one was Onaga and the other was a Bolognese for pasta Wednesday. For dessert, def go with the chocolate ganache and ice cream with caramel syrup and Mac nuts. The whole experience was as expected - excellent!

We were late for our reservation and called ahead and spoke to Meghan. She was very kind and understanding and said she would accommodate us the best she could. When we arrived after a short wait were seated in a lovely booth that was perfect for us with a toddler. Our server Jered, was also kind and very efficient. Our steak wasn’t perfect the first time, but he offered to have another cooked for us and it was great. Meghan even came to check on us after the complaint. I was very impressed with the gracious staff, including the busboy. They were all wonderful and made us feel appreciated even though we had a complaint. Thank you for taking such great care of us!

My husband and I both had the Ahi and it was a large portion and delicious. With covid problems the menu is a bit different but still excellent. Since they closed the downstairs pub prior to the covid, some of the menu items now reflect the good sellers from the pub as appetizers. Our server was excellent and we definitely enjoyed our evening. Prices of wine are a bit high however.

This was our 6th visit in 6 weeks, so we clearly love this place. The staff is friendly and attentive and knowledgeable about their wines. We ate early, at 4:45, and the noise level undoubtedly would increase for later seating times, but the restaurant was quite busy yet not all that loud. I am effectively deaf but had no difficulty conversing with my table mates.

The food is excellent and the prices reasonable for what you get and where they’re located. Highly recommended- especially on Wednesday when they discount the wines by 25%. We also love their raw bar on Friday and Saturday- preferably Friday so they don’t run out.

Merriman’s should update their website with the reduced menu offerings. Very disappointed with the limited menu items and the quality. Having dined there many times we won’t go again until they decide to offer a full quality menu.

We normally love Merriman’s but the changes in the menu due to Covid are disappointing at best. Fish was dry. Lettuce in salad not fresh and crisp. We hope they can return to its previous menu of fine dinning in Poipu.

Hands down our favorite restaurant in Kauai AND without a doubt the best Mai Tai's on the island (or anywhere)! The grilled fish sandwich was delicious. We ordered with sriracha aioli (vs. tarter sauce). Plus, you can't beat the gorgeous view at sunset.
