Fantastic meal at Merriman’s!
When you go to a place with such a reputation it is really hard to stomach fishy fish. That was to hard to overlook. Each night this trip I am dinning at great restaurants with quality food. I'm not looking at the price, but the experience. Sorry but I have to be truthful. Now maybe it was one old fish that is a rarity, but the strawberry and goat cheese salad had dry greens which was a little awkward too.
As usual excellent meal and service. I had the crab & lobster cakes. My hubby had the macadamia nut crusted fish
We shared the ahi poke which was a bit too dressed. They unfortunately did not have blue cheese stuffed olives for my
Ketel martini, so they whipped them up for me
Really wonderful food
Arrived at the restaurant early, with a reservation, it was suggested we sit at the bar. At the appointed time, diners were being sat ahead of my party. The server was essentially absent through most of the meal, taking the order, and bringing the check. He neglected to bring the wine a member of my party had ordered. I was soooo disappointed as I have eaten at Merriman's on the Big Island, and it was one of the best dining experiences of my life. I was hoping for the same here, and that just did not happen.
Best restaurant on Kauai! This time we celebrated our wedding anniversary. We were served right away with complimentary Prosecco and later their great lilliquois mousse.
As always, the Kushiro oysters were special and the fish special dinners cannot be bear anywhere on Kauai.
This is our second visit to Merriman’s. This visit was for my birthday. The open air dining area is stunning and if you time it right you can watch the sunset from here! Outstanding cocktails. The macadamia crusted kampachi is our favorite. The bone-in ribeye was just so-so sadly. Don’t leave without trying the chocolate purse for dessert.
The food was so into! Need to go back for more!
Good place for sunset dining, dinner music was good, great wait staff really made a pleasant evening, appetizer and salads were very good but our fish were overcooked and dry and the shrimp overcooked and hard.
We had an excellent Mac-crusted Mahi Mahi with 2 huge shrimp over kale and rice. Delicious!
On vacation. Always a pleasant experience. Food very good.
Great service, great music. Two veggies sides a bit so salty. Would love to see more vegetarian entree options since there is only one. Lovely presentation & attention to detail. Delicious drinks w/ fresh local ingredients.
Great food & good service. Not too busy for late night dinning.
It was my birthday, and we were treated to glasses of bubbly, and a dessert!
Great atmosphere, disappointed in the service (slow and poor)
Gabe was an incredible server and great food!
We checked in for our reservation. Hostess said she would seat us soon. Waited 15 minutes and rechecked with hostess. They forgot about us and seated someone else in our reservation. Place was pretty empty on Sunday night. Went to our table. Linc was our waiter. Not friendly at all. Very rote with menu etc. don’t think he smiled at all. Food was good. Had eaten here a couple nights before. Food and service were great. That’s why we went back. If Sunday had been our first dining experience, we most likely would not have returned.
Wow! What else can I say but, WOW! Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Fresh, local, organic and delicious!
The restaurant has a pleasant plantation feel. Didn't care much for our table, last along the back deck overlooking the trash. But the sunset in the distance was nice and there were two barn owls hunting over the fields nearby. Then the mojitos and ahi ginger poke arrived at the table, and we all perked up. This was our favorite restaurant of the three we sampled during our spring break trip. One in our party ordered the kampachi at the server's recommendation. Divine, really the best fish I've never heard of.
Excellent food, service, and ambiance
Excellent service — still dreaming about lobster risotto and mahjong (fish of the day). Love Merrimans
We’ve been on the islands for a week and this was the biggest disappointment of any dining experience we’ve had. We were told it was one if the best restaurants on the island, but all 6 if us would disagree. Service was amiable, but lacking in every other way. Food was mediocre to flat out not good. Sadly, I do not recommend this restaurant.
Dinner this year at Merriman’s Poipu was excellent. The mai tais have a different twist with a lilikoi foam on top. They were wonderful. The strawberry, arugula and goat cheese salad was delicious, although very small. My husband and I usually share a salad but this one was so petite, each person will want their own. My husband had a perfectly cooked lobster with brown rice as his side. (By the way, on the web page for the restaurant it states that the lobster comes with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. It actually comes with no sides. This needs to be corrected, as it is misleading.) I had tempura ono fish and Kauai shrimp, which was delicious. My dish did come with sides of corn, coleslaw and a chili aeoli. All were very tasty. Our son ordered the special rib eye and said it was the best steak he had ever had. His was accompanied by potatoes and broccoli. We will definitely be back again whenever we visit Kauai.
Good food, Great service, Good music,
Highly recommend for an enjoyable evening.
Excellent dinner. The watermelon cocktail was amazing and the kampacho was outstanding
We love coming to Merrimans at least once during our stay in Kauai. We love the food!
Merrimans was awesome.
Service incredible, we ordered drinks and blinked and they were here. Same with all our evening orders. The waiter was spot on with his descriptions. Food was tasty,
Wish we had another evening to go back again. Absolutely recommended.
Have been to Merriman’s in the past. Was not as good as I remembered. Our server was pleasant and efficient.
My fish was slightly undercooked. Overall, prefer the Beach House over Merriman’s for the money. And view is much nicer at the Beach House.
The ambiance was nice and the service was good. I was disappointed with my entrée; the seared ahi was a dark purple color and did not taste very fresh.
Excellent food and service!
Went for fish. Tasteless, seemed to have sat before being served and way overpriced. Portions were small and recipes were uninspired. Service was friendly and above par it’s too bad the food was so lousy. Expensive entrees with poor value.
Merriman’s is always tasty, we love going whenever on Maui and now Kauai. The macadamia crusted butterfish was amazing but the crab cakes were a bit heavy handed with the raw onion.
Too loud, you can’t have a conversation
Another excellent meal cooked to perfection. I love the atmosphere and the service. Merriman’s is our go to place for special occasions or to take guests. You won’t find tastier food anywhere on the island!
One of our favorite spots in Kauai and we always make a point to dine there when in town on vacation. I always go for the steak and it does not disappoint.
The coconut, sweet corn, and clam soup was barely average, and if there were clams, I did not encounter any.
The warm goat cheese & arugula salad was very skimpy in proportion.
The kampachi seafood dish was tasty and excellent!
Live music was provided by a guitarist, and was pleasant.
The predominant patronage seemed to be families with children, many of which were toddlers or even babies.
While we enjoyed the seafood main dish, and do not regret eating there, I do not foresee repeat visits.
Absolutely the best meal we’ve had on the island. And service was outstanding.
Ambience is great but the food was average at best. Ordered Seared Ahi with Cabbage Slaw. Ahi was over seared and burned black with bitter taste. Had to cut the seared part off to make it edible. Cabbage Slaw was basically shredded cabbage with few pieces of bean sprouts and no dressing whatsoever.
Not worth the price.
This was our second time to Merrimans, having been here in 2016. Our meals were both delicious but there was no welcome feeling from either the host or our server. It was a very impersonal experience and when dining somewhere special on vacation, and spending a decent amount for entrees ($40+ range), they should provide a more memorable dinner.
Last time we were here, we also enjoyed it, but for some reason it didn't stand out. I realized it must have been that same vibe.
The overall experience was good. There were a couple of negatives. First, we were not seated until 30 minutes after our reservation time. There was no effort made during that time to offer us the opportunity to order drinks or appetizers. Also, the restaurant was extremely loud.
On positive notes, our server, Linc, was wonderful. Also, the wine list was extensive and the tasting menu was amazing.
Having looked at reviews, we asked for a quiet table out on the lanai. We were pleasantly surprised that staff read our request in Open Table and seated us the quietest, most romantic table with sunset views. Link, the server, and the helpers were most professional. Service was fast, food was absolutely delicious. Wine was perfect. Expensive by Hawaii standards, but well worth it for special occasions.
