Merriman's Fish House - Poipu, Kauai Ratings and Reviews
Mix up on early bird drinks. Wine was 25% off but only at bar, even though website showed discount and server said discount, but bill didn't show discount and corrected bill was still night right.
Service was friendly, and food was good. Limited selection of wine by the glass. Prices high $15 for Caesar salad.
We had an opportunity to eat out for dinner each night of our vacation. I was excited about eating at Merriman's Fish House because of our dining experience at their restaurant in Maui so I saved it for last. Our server was awesome and that is why I rated them a 4. Unfortunately, the quality of food didn't hold up to the other top 5 restaurants we visited prior during our trip. I'm sorry to report this but being very honest.
Got off to a bad start when we were seated just as we were ordering a drink at the bar. When we were seated, we were told the happy hour prices were not honored in the dining room. We could pay full price or go back to the bar and take a chance on a table being available later.
The rest of the evening went about that way.
No salt and pepper on the table, and we had to request pepper for the Caesar salad, which was disappointingly lacking in flavor. The entrees were well prepared and flavorful, and the ambience was very nice, with a beautiful view of the Hawaiian sunset.
The wine list was pretentious and very expensive.
Overall, we found this restaurant to be underwhelming and unwelcoming for the price.
Strawberry salad with goat cheese & clam corn chowder were lovely starters. Tasty fresh fish (uku and tempura shrimp and ono)
prepared as ordered. Pineapple bread pudding wasn’t too cloyingly sweet and with coffee a nice end to our meal. Live music added to the sunset and open air atmosphere.
Ordered the fish special - monchong. It was way over cooked and the preparation was overpowering for this delicate fish. The waiter said it was not spicy, but it definitely had a kick to it. Should have sent it back. Husband enjoyed his seafood linguini. Recommend with reservations.
The service and food were terrible. Our server forgot our drinks several times. We had our salads, which was the best part of the meal, before we had our drinks. They never filled our water glasses unless we asked. Other smaller tables had much better service. It didn’t make sense until we received the bill because our tip was already included. Our food arrived and it was ice cold. My wife’s steak was super rare, so much so that it was very cold. Overall, it was a major disappointment and too expensive for such poor service and food quality.
Everything was perfect, including location, food, service and ambience. HOWEVER, our party of 6 (with advance reservations) was initially put at a table right next to the singer. It was so loud that there was no way we could even hear one another. We requested to change table and were told there was no other availability, except for another table which they could clear just a few feet away. The same noise issue, of course. We didn't accept. In the end, the hostess offered us a table outside the restaurant, by the reception area, which we accepted. It was a bit odd, but kind of nice. Away from the very loud music...
New Year’s Eve. Had reservations for a party of 2 for over 2 months. Arrived plenty early and got stuck with the worst seat in the house. No view, behind a machine and although off the main walkway, that left us with mediocre service—out of sight out of mind type service. The limited menus was a complete disappointment and it was not disclosed when we made reservations. Probably our worst dinner experience in Kauai.
Merriman's on the Big Island is our favorite restaurant. Unfortunately we were disappointed in this location's food. Uninspiring and mediocre. We went for a special New Year's Eve family dinner and it squelched our celebratory mood. Sunset was wonderful though!
I was disappointed in my experience. The restaurant is beautiful, but we were seated in a corner overlooking the back alley. We requested to be moved and were placed only three tables away from our original location when there were seats in the main dining room. The service was totally mediocre and the food was nothing great especially for the cost. Totally underwhelming experience.
We were a group of four for their Christmas Day fixed price meal. The poor quality of the meal was matched by the incompetent service. First the food...it was terrible. We had the vegetable Wellington, which was one of the worst dishes I have ever been served. The promised mushrooms were just a paste surrounding a cluster of barely cooked carrots, wrapped in undercooked and soggy puff dough. It looked like a pair of lousy supermarket egg rolls, with less flavor. This was supposed to be the main course in a $79 pp meal? We sent them back and dined instead on 2 poorly trimmed lamb chops. Waiter forgot to serve the salad course until we reminded him after we received our foregettable appetizers. The poke compared poorly to the poke I had from a local food truck that afternoon. The included dessert was 3 bars we were supposed to divide between two people. Why didn’t they just cut them in half and serve individual portions? The coconut bar tasted like jello on a crust. Maybe someone likes that, but hardly what one would expect at this price. Even the butter had an odd color. Waiter seemed continually confused and lacking in any sort of professional demeanor. We have been to several Merriman’s restaurants before, so this was a massive disappointment and huge waste of money for what was supposed to be a special holiday meal.
We have enjoyed dining at Merriman's in the past, but the 2017 Christmas dinner was a big disappointment. The food was good but not great. This makes the second year in a row where Christmas dinner at the restaurant disappointed us. We will not return next year.
We ate here on christmas and I was less than thrilled to learn when we arrived that they had a fixed menu and didn’t think I liked many of the choices, however the food ended up being PHENOMENAL, the service was great and they even brought us a little champagne for our honeymoon! Other than being a little more than we wanted to spend it was perfect so if you go on a holiday be sure to ask about the fixed menu!
Went for Christmas Dinner, a prix fixe menu. Salad to share was barely enough for one, very tasty dressing. Rushed service from there. Brought husbands lamb to table very rare, we were not asked preferred temperature upon ordering. Waited for new entree, when it came, which was quickly, my entree was cold. Dessert was presented and less than a minute later the bill. No offer of coffee or after dinner drinks. I guess special occasion just means move them through for this restaurant.
Never gotten such bad service for such an expensive meal! Our server clearly did NOT want to be there on Christmas Eve, and so he made no effort whatsoever. We asked for share plates for our appetizers - by the time he came back 10 min later, we were practically finished. We told him we did not like the dessert (the coconut cream was utterly flavorless, and the lilikoi mousse was on a gingerbread crust that completely obliterated the taste of the lilikoi). He shrugged and asked if we'd like the check. Meanwhile, we saw other diners having alternative desserts like ice cream, so he could have easily offered us a different option. We would have liked to speak with the manager, but he or she was nowhere to be seen, much like our waiter for most of our meal. We've been to Merriman's on Maui and it was great. Would not recommend or plan to come back to the Kauai location.
The checkin process was a nightmare, they wanted to put any couple in the worst table they had, between the kitchen door and the bathroom with no view. They switched us to another table, as well as at least 3 more couples after that. The food was great and our server (Nick, also). Prices and comparable with other restaurants in the island. Except the checkin everything else was wonderful.
