Merriman's Fish House - Poipu, Kauai Ratings and Reviews
Poor seating, had told at booking was a special occasion ( had booked a week in advance), reply told seating is on a first come first choice. Merriman's had previously been fine dining but very casual now, can even where a ball cap and dine.....oh so classy...not. The food was OK but not what had previously experienced at the Maui location and out of some choices of regular menu items.
Merriman's Fish House in Poipu is a must when you are Kauai. We did the tasting menu since we had a party of 5... the food, service and view was outstanding! With the tastings, you get plenty of food to share and you leave there very satisfied. It's a great way to try a lot of their dishes (tapas like). Every dish was so delicious... but nothing beats their malasadas with salted caramel sauce! Highly recommend this restaurant.
We have eaten at Merrimans several times on the Big Island, and always had exceptional experience. We made a reservation here with friends who we had told all about it. We were disappointed in the service, and that the fish of the day was already gone at 7:00.
The meals we had were sub-standard for this restaurant. I have eaten here numerous times while on Kauai, and this dinner was not even close to why I recommended this restaurant in the past to my friends and family.
Specialty Fish on the Menu - Way too salty and dry. Could not taste the fish inside the macadamia crust.
Malasadas - doughy inside as though they were undercooked. Not light and creamy as usual.
2% upcharge for background staff. Explanation was to reward staff in the back preparing our meals and cleaning the dishes. Also was told it was a way to honor these folks without raising dinner prices. Are you kidding me? You just raised my whole dinner bill by 2% and the 2% appeared hidden on the bill.
There are way too many restaurants on the Island for me to frequent. I am pretty unforgiving when it comes to spending this kind of money on a dinner. It was not even close to being acceptable!
Great restaurant, very romantic with a great sunset. Everything but one dish we had was delicious. However, both my wife and myself thought that while it is touted as the fanciest restaurant on the Island, Eating House 1849 was better. The staff was great, and very attentive. There was a mess up on my main dish, and while the staff did not hand it superbly right of the bat, but they more than made it up in the end. I am sure you will have a great time, but not a place we are planing to return to with so many great options on the Island.
This is a beautiful restaurant with breathtaking views. We arrived a little early so we could have a drink at the bar. The bartender was not friendly and seemed to have other things to do. A waiter then came to bar with a specific drink request that neither the bartender or the waiter recognized. They both laughed and appeared to make fun of this person for their silly request. When we were seated we had this same waiter. She was not friendly or engaging. The food is excellent and the view is amazing. This was the only place we ate where we experienced unfriendly service.
Unfortunately a disappointment
We were on our honeymoon . They knew it was our honeymoon.
We were seated in a back corner of the open air porch which sorta put us in a remote section. That was okay, however the cigarette smoke from the kitchen staff below wafted up making the ambiance a little challenged.
We ordered a lobster cake appetizer. We then ordered our entrees. Waiter was a bit absent. Then our entrees arrived. At that point, we asked about the appetizer. He indicated it had been forgotten We told him not a problem, we did not want the appetizer at this point. Waiter said okay and he would provide us dessert free of charge. My New York Strip steak was a bit tough and over cooked in some areas and raw in other areas. New York Strip was the only steak they had. I wish they had gone to the Coscto on the Island and served their filet mignons. The appetizer then showed up. We thought that was odd. The appetizer was so salty it was inedible. The meal is going downhill from here. Dessert finally arrives and I think it was fine definitely not memorable. Bill arrives and fortunately appetizer was not charged however we were charged for the dessert even though waiter was to not charge for it. Discussed it with waiter and he became snarky at that point. He grudgingly had it adjusted off. Then it simply got awkward and I was trying how much of an obligatory tip I was going to leave. Overall a bad experience.
The entrees: NY Steak and the Special (2 kinds of fish and Big Island lobster). I found one small sliver of lobster, many scales in the sauce and the taste was bland. Steak very thin, tough and not much taste. Not too sure about that chef.
The Draft Brown Maui Ale was killer.
Outstanding meal the food was top quality. Cocktails were good. We split the ahi poke but it wasn’t enough for two as it was skimpy on ahi. We both had the special opakapaka entree with two shrimp, it was exceptional. Food here is expensive but worth it. We’ll be back again.
Th family dinner for 4 or more is terrific and a great value @ $69. The poke is great, the kalua pork quesadillas great and the Macadamia Crusted Kampachi the best ever. Tomato avocodo "salad" needed salt, nothing special but good. Same for the seared ahi- rather pedestrian and under flavored. The steak needed more chimichuri sauce. meal ended with a bang-- the pineapple bread pudding (if you don't get a dried out corner piece) and the white chocolate filled malasadas (superfresh, hot, yummy, sugar dusted doughnut holes) are huge winners. Went back a 2nd night to have this. went back 2 other nights as a couple and ordered a la carte. Skip the Ono and prawn tempura-- the batter was too heavy, not really tempura.
LOTS of amazing dishes here... check it out!
Merriman's was awesome!! Don't let the fact that it's in a "Strip Mall" of sorts fool you. This is the real deal. We were offered complimentary champagne since it was our honeymoon, very thoughtful, upon arrival. Service was awesome and the view was very unique. Toward the side you can see the beautiful Kauai countryside and if you sit toward the back of the restaurant by the water, you'll have an amazing view of the sunset (when making Reservation, I would specify that you want to be near the back of the restaurant over looking the water) and make it early enough so that you're there for the time the sun starts to set. Great menu full of fresh flavors and ingredients. Clean restrooms and they had a great acoustic singer near the bar, too!
Most notable was the service. Our waiter made an exception and provided a meal not exactly from the menu as it had been recommended to me. Most exceptional was the lobster and en hilada, and the Godiva chocolate martini. A wonderful birthday dinner. There was a very large group taking up 3 tables so it was a little noisy, but not that bad.
Merriman’s always delivers! Wonderful fresh fish dishes with amazing local catches and ingredients. Fabulous views, live music, gentle breezes, make for a wonderful setting. The wine list is phenomenal but unnecessarily pricy. The white chocolate filled malasadas are a wonderful finish to a fine meal. Overall, a great dining experience.
Hostess staff not very aware. Seated us at a table which was by a kitchen door in a virtual wind tunnel. When asked to move they did accommodate but seemed perturbed. Another attempt to seat another party at exact table resulted in same outcome. No table should even be located at that spot. Food good, wait staff attentive. Food should have been paced better. Not really that impressed. I was expecting a lot more.
Last night in Kauai so wanted a special dinner. Have eaten at their other locations on the Big Island & Maui. From memory this was the best. Had a great lobster dinner. Didn't have to wait long for the meal to come. The server, whose name escapes me, was great. Not an inexpensive evening but for us it was worth it.
