Merriman's Fish House - Poipu, Kauai Ratings and Reviews
I never review restaurants and hate to be a complainer but our experience was not that great. We had an 8:00 reservation and you could tell our waitress was fading away as the night progressed. Everything started out fine but she checked in on a very minimal basis after our meal was delivered... didn't ask my wife if she wanted a second drink and I had to ask for our water glasses to be filled.
The fish in our dishes was delicious but the green beans were swimming in butter and there was a massive amount of butter over my side of mashed potatoes. We are not huge on consuming mass amounts of butter and will dine else where in the future when looking to spend around $200 on dinner.
The clam, corn, and coconut soup was outstanding, and the lilikoi mousse was wonderful.
But the main course, mahi mahi. had a crust that was salted to a ruinous degree. The guitarist was wildly overamplified with songs that seemed a bad fit for the elegant surroundings. Get rid of him and the salter in the kitchen and it would bw a thumbs up.
The food was very good. We were not in a hurry but even so the service was very slow. On previous occasions at Merriman’s the service has been excellent. A band was playing downstairs which contributed to the excessive noise level. They need to step up their service etc.
We have eaten in other Merriman restaurants and in their Poipu location once before and the food was excellent. My ono was so heavily battered that the fish was ruined. The sauce tasted liked McDonald's secret sauce and the salad it was placed on was soggy. This fish meal was $30+. My husband's fish was very small and the tomato based sauce was flavorless - agin $30+. We have had great meals here in the past, but this $100 plus meal was not worth it.
Maybe an off-night for the chef. We’ve been here before and loved it. This time, we waited an appallingly long time, first for our chef salad, then for our entrees. My food ( Mac crusted kampachi) was wonderful, my husbands steak was tough, and ahi, flavorless. Uh-oh, you struck out! The question is...should we return?
corn soup is awesome and poke good. my husband wasn't impressed with his ahi, but the ono tempura is a star. we like this restaurant for special occasions as it is pricey. a secret: if you purchase wine at the wine shop in Koloa, the corkage is waived (at least it was the night we were there). it can be noisy and disturbingly so if you are seated next to entertainment. ask for a table away from it if you want to have a conversation at your table.
We had a very nice meal at Merriman's. I had the seafood linguini which had a real nice tomato sauce and plenty of various types of fish. I cleaned the bowl using the great bread they provide. My wife had their signature mahi dish and she was very pleased with the way it was prepared and the flavor was delicious. The wait staff was terrific and very attentive. On the way out we were presented with cookies to take home. Grab more if you can - they are fantastic. Enjoy.
We had a quiet table away from the music so it was easy to chat over our meal. The elevator to this second floor restaurant open in the lobby so it is very ADA accessible. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about items on the menu. Food was outstanding and includes a nice selection of seafood and meat. The coconut creme brulee was done to perfection, and enough to share after a filling meal. While the prices are high, it is worth the cost, especially if one is celebrating an occasion or just wants a special meal while on vacation.
Tried to make reservations for Thanksgiving dinner, but it was sold out. Went the next night. We got there at opening time, but there were many people already seated. Parking is scarce, so go early. We had a great table with a full view of the sunset. Our waiter, Brandon, was very personable and attentive, and the rest of the staff was great. We had the ahi poke appetizer which was a little spicy, but delish. Friends had the steak and lobster, and the ono tempura with Kauai shrimp. Both were good. I had the island catch which was mahi-mahi. It was tasty, but a little over cooked. Was Tough to chew and swallow. Glad I got a chance to try this restaurant. Probably wouldn’t go back, though. Kauai has too many great restaurants to eat at, so once is enough for me,
We arrived on time and were taken to a table at the back of the restaurant. When asked, they moved us 1 table forward. They refused to seat us at the table that was closer to the window, saying "certain tables are reserved for certain people". Since this is an ocean view restaurant and we made reservations 3 weeks in advance, I was curious who would get that table. It sat empty for the entire 1.5 hrs we were there. (As did other tables). Then they rushed the meal. We had just started our 1st course when the second course was delivered, etc. This was a Thanksgiving price fix menu, and the food was good, but service not so much. We've come here before and enjoyed it. Hopefully this was an anomaly...?
Peter Merriman claims to be" local" but their menu doesn't reflect that- except for the fish. The beef on the menu is not local but yet we produce fabulous beef on Kauai, Maui and Big Island. I was served a mainland orange muddled in my drink (and told they couldn't get local oranges yet), but I was there with a friend who just picked over 500 lbs of oranges off her trees. Our meal was over-priced. The server forgot the appetizer. I requested a table (weeks in advance) on the lanai but was seated inside by a window. I won't go back.
Beautiful atmosphere but the food was average at best and very pricey.
I had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi and it was very salty and dry. I love extra salt so this gives you an idea.
We ordered an arugula salad for $15 to share and it was so small not even enough for one.
I’d go there for a drink and maybe an appetizer at sunset but otherwise won’t go back.
Service was very good
My family and I went here for dinner because we are huge fans of Merrimans in Kapalua. We had a nice, yummy dinner with great service. Just as we were eating our dessert, the Hawaiian music playing on the sound system changed to a R-rated foul comedy routine. For the next several minutes, my 9 and 10 year olds heard "Mother F*&king N*&er" this and Mother F*&king N-word" that. I was sure someone would stop this immediately, but I had to flag down a server (twice) to point out that the channel had changed to something inappropriate. The manager came by to apologize saying she changed it as soon as she heard what was going on (which was not nearly quick enough), but by now my husband and I were mortified, our meal (and night!) was ruined, and my children learned some colorful new language. The manager did nothing to compensate us which was disheartening. I would not return to this restaurant because even though I'm sure it was an isolated incident, the manager did nothing to show her remorse. What a horrible experience to what could have been a lovely night!
After having a truly awful meal at the Beach House (the so-called fresh fish of the day was so overcooked and chewy I had to spit it out), what a refreshing and wonderful meal we had at the Fish House!!! Nice Hawaiian music, open air without being outside, fantastic service!! We will go back to the Fish House every time we visit Kauai!!
I must say we had a very interesting experience at Merriman's. My 85 year old mom was visiting us from Oahu so we decided to have a pre-Thanksgiving celebration. Merrimans kindly offered a kama'aina special so we thought we'd take advantage of it being a part of 12.
I made a reservation via Open Table 2 days prior but was able to make it only for a party of 6. I called Merrimans twice to increase the party size to 12 and even sent an email but could not reach anyone. Because I was unable to make a booking for more than 6 on line nor reach anyone via phone or email at Merrimans, another family member made a 2nd reservation for 6 on Open Table for the same day. In the notes of the 2nd reservation, he noted that we would like to combine our tables for the 5:30p seating. Later that day, a gentleman from Merrrimans called me back & confirmed our combined reservations for 12.
When we arrived at Merrimans, manager Gerri-Lynn said she had reservations for us but it was for a party of 18. We explained to her that it was only for 12. She became upset & insisted that it was for a party of 18 even after we tried to explain it was only for 12. She had me walk over to the front of the restaurant where the Ipad was located while the rest of our party stood around & showed me the 2nd reservation notes that stated only that they were joining our table. (Nowhere did it mention 18 people. ) This turned into a very uncomfortable experience for all of us. By then the rest of our party trickled in & we all ended up standing around while this manager insisted that we had made a reservation for 18. What should have been a simple fix turned into a very bad first impression for all of us.
Mahalo to our server Jared & assistance Alex who were awesome. Many of us are also in the hospitality business & this treatment was uncalled for & should never have happened. "You never have a second chance to make a good first impression."
Poor seating, had told at booking was a special occasion ( had booked a week in advance), reply told seating is on a first come first choice. Merriman's had previously been fine dining but very casual now, can even where a ball cap and dine.....oh so classy...not. The food was OK but not what had previously experienced at the Maui location and out of some choices of regular menu items.
Merriman's Fish House in Poipu is a must when you are Kauai. We did the tasting menu since we had a party of 5... the food, service and view was outstanding! With the tastings, you get plenty of food to share and you leave there very satisfied. It's a great way to try a lot of their dishes (tapas like). Every dish was so delicious... but nothing beats their malasadas with salted caramel sauce! Highly recommend this restaurant.
