Merriman's Fish House - Poipu, Kauai Ratings and Reviews
We'd call this "Casual fine dining" at it's finest. The very best staff. All the waiters wore ties, were extremely attentive, professional and courteous--but personable and friendly, keeping it from feeling stuffy and pretentious. It had a very relaxed island vibe and it's reflected in the menu and ambience. The food was heavenly and reasonable for the way it's pepared and presented. The one tiny exception was the "add on to any entree-lobster". It was melt-in- your-mouth perfection but it was a bit frugal and sloppy looking. Still, it tasted very good.
The bread basket was very flavorful. The suprise complimentary dessert was perfect. Best restaurant merlot I've tasted in a year. So glad I asked for the waiter's suggestion and he advised the Kampachi entree. It was spot on.
Requested a sunset view table for a day before Valentine’s Day dinner with friends. Service, food and wine list are exceptional. Post dinner (tasting menu) everyone raved about the food. The combination of the setting, wine, and the food made for the best meal we had on the island. We have refined food and wine tastes among our two couples and were treated to an outstanding evening at Merriman’s. We’ll be back.
My boyfriend and I went to Merriman’s for my birthday dinner. We felt very disrespected by our waiter Link. He was rude and made several uncalled for and sarcastic remarks. He wasn’t attentive and didn’t rally seem to care how our experience was going. Link made several rude comments to my boyfriend and by his body language and actions you could tell he didn’t like his job very much.
The food here left much to be desired and the price was outrageous! We have been to a lot of different restaurants that excel Merriman’s.
Eating here was a disappointment and to say the least we will not recommend Merriman’s not will we ever dine here again.
Excellent! This was our last night in Kauai and we wanted a special place to celebrate our trip. We were seated on the back lania which I highly recommend for the view and how quiet it is in that area. Each dish was carefully prepared. Portions were perfect, not too big or too small. Wine list was decent. Mandy our server was cheerful and attentive. Definitely will be back next year.
The service was very good - similar to Merriman's on other islands. The food was more bland than we have experienced at other similar restaurants. They did not have the salad that my wife was anticipating. The location in the middle of a shopping center made it feel ordinary.
We had an enjoyable evening here. The hostess and our wait staff were friendly and attentive. The prices are moderately expensive, but the quality of the meal and its ingredients are worth it. The rib eye was really good, the potatoes and broccoli complemented it nicely. They made accommodations for our son, who has special needs and a shellfish allergy. We will be back.
Another great meal for us on a rainy, stormy night. Excellent service from Michael . Merrimans has the best oysters on Kauai --Kushi oysters on regular menu. Salads, fish specials and passion fruit mousse dessert are our regular meals and cannot be beaten anywhere on Kauai.
Rainy night in Kauai and we read the reviews. Simply said: AMAZING! We booked short notice after a day of exploration. The service was outstanding and the food was truly on point. The staff was very friendly. All of the tables really seemed to be enjoying themselves. One of the best meals we have had on Kauai.
Side note. I had meet with friends at the lower burger/pizza bar a few nights prior and that was excellent too.
Our waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Corn and clam soup and Caesar salad were quite good as was the seafood pasta. The tempura shrimp was over cooked with a small cob of corn that was tough, old and over cooked. Nice selection of by the glass wine and very nice guitar music.
The four of us had an outstanding dining experience. Our waiter and busboy were very professional and friendly without being intrusive We enjoyed being able to taste a flight of three wines and the food was great. The background music (a woman singing mostly old classics and Hawaiian songs) was tasteful and the volume was low enough not to interfere with our conversation.
The prices are almost comparable to New York but worth it. My only minor complaint is that the restaurant adds a 2% surcharge for the kitchen staff. I agree that the kitchen staff are underpaid relative to the wait staff who receive tips but think that their compensation should be part of the restaurant's overhead or the restaurant should charge a mandatory service charge to be shared between the wait staff and kitchen staff.
Really was a nice dining experience. There was live music the night we were there, and as the music began, the volume of the restaurant went way up as people were trying to talk over the music, which made dinner conversation more difficult. Our waiter, Justin was wonderful. Attentive, but not overly so. The Kampachi was good, not excellent. I was disappointed there were not more wines under $100. Still, having said that, I would return so we could try other dishes.
Mix up on early bird drinks. Wine was 25% off but only at bar, even though website showed discount and server said discount, but bill didn't show discount and corrected bill was still night right.
Service was friendly, and food was good. Limited selection of wine by the glass. Prices high $15 for Caesar salad.
