The host Rick was so friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable and our experience was so great that we ended up going to the Merriman sister restaurant the next day for lunch. The food was delicious and fresh. We will definitely be back during our next visit to Kauai!!! Highly recommend!
GM Rick is excellent and very accommodating.
Ambiance is very nice. Restaurant is clean and eating on the veranda just before sunset is recommended.
The food was very tasty but we found the portions are too small to share. We shared a Caesar salad, the crab cakes and seafood linguine.
Knowing we were sharing, the server might have asked the kitchen to enhance the portions as is done in other establishments. The main entree of seafood linguine was very skimpy. The contents : Barely any linguine, cooked vegetables, 1 piece of lobster the size of a thumbnail, 2 clams, 4 teeny pieces of unidentifiable fish that was overcooked and not eaten, and 2 decent sized shrimps. The tomato sauce was excellent but the entree was overpriced and skimpy even for 1 diner in a restaurant of this caliber.
Table service was excellent.
The lobster/crab cakes were superb, as was the Caesar salad with fried green tomatoes. One entré, the Kampachi, was excellent. Great flavor. The fresh fish entré was prawns and grilled Monchong. The prawns were good but the Monchong piece was too small to be grilled. The thin areas of the fish were crispy burned. Not good and just not a good presentation. The brown rice was fine but the local kale was so tough as to be inedible. So, mixed result all around. Others were being offered Mahi-mahi as fresh fish so not sure the staff knew what was being offered or served. Me either.
Anniversary dinner. The Tempura Ono & Shrimp was excellent, but the chili sauce was wayyy too strong & ruined the dish. The waiter brought a butter sauce instead, but that was way too bland. Chili sauce would have been good with about 25% the chili. Corn was good as was the Mai Tai.
My husband got the Manchong fish & Shrimp pan seared with spinach & rice which he felt was very good.
Bread pudding for dessert was a bit disappointing. Menu said it had s butter rum sauce, but it didn’t come with that. Had ice cream. The rum sauce would have made it much better.
Overall service was pretty good & the predinner rolls were excellent.
Would recommend for date night or special occasion as the ambiance was great. Nice singer for entertainment & not too loud so u could still chat.
Excellent for special celebrations or casual meal. Skews toward seafood, but something for everyone. Fish is very fresh and well prepared. Good wine list with some reasonably priced options, but pricey ones as well. Sommelier is very good and helpful. Great open air setting. Staff is professional and attentive. Not inexpensive, but fairly priced for resort location. Most nights free valet parking available.
Very enjoyable evening at Merrimans. Fun place with a great ambience. Service was pretty good, although it took some time to get our wine. Waiter was a very nice guy but we had to remind him a few times about things we asked for. Food was very good and they are not shy about their prices. My wife had the fish of the day which was not as good as the same meal she had at Dukes a few days before for about 20 dollars less. There was also some sort of kitchen charge on the bill which we had no idea what that was.
Would I go back? Not sure. Good time but I really question the value of what you get there.
Exceptional in every way. Crab cake appetizer, fish entrees, really excellent. Our server Steven made it especially perfect.
We found no fault at all, was one of the best dinners we’ve had on the island, and the service was perfect!
The food is excellent! The atmosphere is nice. The restaurant is not air conditioned though, which made it slightly uncomfortable. Our waiter didn't have a lot of enthusiasm... a bit of an edge to him. Perhaps it was because our reservation was at 8:15pm and by 10:15 he didn't want to be there?
Really great dinner with live music! Good drinks and service as well, just a great atmosphere.
We had a wonderful dinner at Merriman’s. The experience was great from the moment we entered the restaurant until we left. The front and waitstaff were all very knowledgeable and helpful. Our waiter was fantastic and so personable. The food was delicious.
This was our first visit to Hawaii to celebrate my 50th. We were just a small table of 5. Overall we enjoyed the restaurant- I just wished our table was better and our server would have been more polite. Our table was literally right next to the musician so it was hard to hear. The food was excellent as well as the cocktails, but our waiter was not friendly. Southern hospitality doesn’t extend to Hawaii.
Started poorly as we checked in but our reservation was then apparently ignored for some time. Appreciate the hostess being flexible when I asked to not sit in front of the kitchen - really terrible placement. All that said, food was very good and our server was excellent.
Not as good As it was 4 years ago. Food was mediocre for the price.
We’re local, eat here often. For some reason, the macadamia crusted fish was especially good tonight. Always a good experience.
When reservations were made, we noted that we were celebrating an anniversary. About mid-day Rick called and suggested we come about an hour earlier in order to enjoy the sunset. Once seated on the terrace we were greeted with flutes of sparkling wine and a glorious west-facing view. Dinner and the sunset were both wonderful as was the service. When we return to Kauai, we will definitely dine at Merriman's!
Although I have no complaints I didn't give 5 stars cause I believe there is always room for improvement; to make a good even better.
Food is always consistently good. Service is the best on the island. It is a pleasurable experience in a quiet relaxing environment.
Nice restaurant. Our server was great! The food tasted delicious. Two out of four of us had bad stomachs issues after eating there. It’s too pricey to be dealing with GI issues after the fact. They must need to clean the kitchen or keep food more fresh. We will look elsewhere for other dinner issues.
Other than being hot, everything was on point. They can’t control the weather but they made sure to accommodate all in every way they could. First time for having Kampachi, and it was fantastic. Thinking about going back just for this.....
They have a vegetarian entree which is really nice to have for a seafood restaurant. We usually don’t go to seafood restaurants because I struggle to find something to eat. But here it was perfect and they even offered to make it vegan if I would like.
Beautiful scenery looking towards the western mountains at sunset. Great menu offering with local flair. Special place.
We were at Merriman's while celebrating two family birthdays. Great food, great service. I had the fresh fish of the day, a few people in the group had a steak special that they said was great. Desserts were delicious! The only downside, we were in Kauai during an extremely hot week, and our beautiful table was sweltering. We ate and left quickly, because it was too hot to linger...
wonderful local fish, perfectly prepared to highlight the fresh seasonal ingredients. The view is great and the staff welcoming and friendly.
Over priced for the same seafood dishes every other restaurant serves. Nothing special here
Great ambiance, service and food
Went here to celebrate our honeymoon and treat ourselves to a nice dinner. The food, light live music and drinks were everything we were looking for. Great location from our hotel we stayed in on the south shore. Everyone here was welcoming and the food was amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice dinner while they are here.
The fish and steak entrees were excellent. The drinks were maybe a B plus. The setting was casual and comfortable. The prices were on the high side.
Delicious. Great atmosphere
Came here for dinner, we usually come here for lunch on our arrival to the island. We have been here once before (for dinner) so we decided to try it out once more. Sadly our overall experience was mediocre. Service was poor, food came out cold and flavorless. Not sure we will return for dinner. So far lunches have been great!
Great date night with delicious food and drinks!
My wife and I go Meriman's when we visit our favorite Island, Kauai, which is every year for over 10 years now. Never been disappointed. We brought some friends to Kauai for their first time and we took them to Meriman's. Service was its normal excellence, food for the most part was very good to excellent. My one issue was the menu. I understand clearly Meriman's leads more to Hawaiian sea food. But the menu seemed to have less choices of seafood in general, along with not having more meat, vegetarian or chicken choices. It seems the menu has lost a lot of its imagination.
I love Merriman’s. Food was great. My husband got a signature fish dish with a macadamias crust. I wasn’t that hungry and I got the crab and lobster cake appetizer and brown rice. The dessert of mini pastries and caramel sauce was wonderful. Sunset is beautiful from the restaurant.
The food and cocktails were superb... farm to table. We all agreed it was our best meal on the island.
Fish fresh (Ahi Tuna & Macadamia Crusted Fish ) served to perfection. We all raved about the Poke, Lobster Mac & Cheese and Coconut Creme Brûlée. Highly recommend this restaurant, but a little bit expensive - but no different in pricing than any of the other restaurants on the island!
DISAPPOINTING!! We had very different experience than previous Merriman’s visits. They have really slipped. The service was awful. The service was extremely slow and did not flow well, even though the restaurant was not busy. It took 30 minutes to get cocktails from the time we ordered. Then the server brought appetizers and salads at the same time. One appetizer had to be sent back because it was burnt. We received only 3 bread rolls with 4 people dining and had to ask for more. We then had a long wait for our main course. Our server was never around, he disappeared after serving each course. This is not what I expect from a restaurant with Merriman’s reputation and prices. I don’t expect we will return and our recommendations to friends and fellow vacationers will not be kind.
We are local and always enjoy Merriman's. You know you with always have the best, freshest and most creative from the culinary staff. The food is where Merriman's shine. Thank you! We'll be back.
Merriman’s is an excellent place for fresh fish that is elegantly prepared. Everything tasted fabulous, and the service was outstanding. Highly recommend for a dinner choice that is both fanciful and great tasting.
Food was very delicious! Our server was very attentive and made our honeymoon experience special.
Wonderful meal. Great fresh fish
