Best thing I’ve done in Norfolk! I loved the tasting
I've always loved Mermaid Winery! Great place to go with a few friends, good food, and I love the wine flights. My dinner came out quite a while after the other two, and seemed a bit rushed, but all our appetizers were great.
My only complaint is about how long I was left waiting for service. I made a reservation at 7 pm. My party arrived at 6:55 pm. We waited for someone to come check us in for 10-15 minutes. Employees walked by... some actually made eye contact... but no one came up to ask if we needed help. There was a tasting at the front, so that might played a factor. But it still felt like a very long time. Beyond that... the server was was great, the food was delicious, and the wine was amazing. I will be back again. But I may not bother making a reservation next time.
Overall an ok experience. Good concept not supported with execution. A single server did his best with small and large groups but the kitchen did not keep up nor any help materialized. The two locations of this concept could be merged with one location with service and execution faithfully translating the vision. Great wine list with mostly winners but a few stinkers. Looking forward to visiting the VB location before making a final decision. Prices are reasonable once service issues are resolved.
Great place, the venue was beautiful, the wine was amazing. Staff was knowledgeable and nice.
Delicious brie en croute! Everything else was generally tasty, too. I ordered a flight of Mermaid wines; one of them smelled like detergent. I flagged it to the host but he just brought another pour of exactly the same nasty undrinkable stuff, so that was a minus. It can get quite noisy when the bar is full.
This location is great for date night. I had an awesome time there.
Service was a little slow. Food and wine was good,i enjoyed the wine selections m. Yeah
It was a great experience! Server was very knowledgeable of the wine we selected and food was great.
Girls weekend planned for weeks, excited to try a new place and this wasn’t what we thought it would be. Food was mediocre and the wait was entirely too long. Ordered a flight and the waitress put it on the edge of the table. When attempting to move it, knocked over a glass and spilled wine over table and myself. She just looked and then brought over a rag that she handed my friend to clean up. When ordering food, the 5 of us were disappointed as many of the menu items were not available. This was a Saturday at 1pm. Ordered a side of fries, told it would be quick because there weren’t any other orders but still 20 minutes to get fries to the table. This will not be a future place for girls weekend.
It took 30 minutes for flatbread and salad. It was my friend birthday. This was the 1st and last time for us both.
I am new to the area. I had heard this restaurant was good. So I booked it to host out of town business associates. We were not disappointed. The staff was welcoming. Extensive wine menu. Even the wine on the happy hour menu was good. They offer plenty of snacking food but the entree menu was limited. We each ordered something different. The food was delicious. They have a nice patio area for hanging out and enjoying some wine with friends
The menu has changed since we were there last. It's more of a casual menu with smaller portions. Not as many entrees. Changing staff is hard to maintain consistency but still a fun less serious place to taste many wines.
Amazing staff! Elysse (sp?) was an remarkable waitress and provided the best service I’ve ever had at any restaurant. Food was remarkable.
Great experience! Excellent service, food and wine. Very nice ambience, quiet enough to have a conversation at a big table.
It was my gf and I second time coming. We like the food and the wine is great! The service can be a little slow sometimes and when you walk in there is no one to great you. The workers just kind of look at you from behind the bar until you say something. Other than that this place is great!
My husband and I dined before seeing a show at Chrysler Hall. Meal was excellent- service a tad slow but a popular night to be out and waitress seemed to have a lot of tables. Otherwise we enjoyed it!
Loved the wine and the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The crispy Brussel Sprouts were very good but the Brie appetizer tasted old, wasn’t warm, and two other small plates were subpar. We will be back: perhaps the kitchen was having a bad night. Prices were reasonable. Our waitress helped make our evening special with wonderful wine recommendations.
Love the food! Love the wine! Staff was wonderful! Will be back for sure to try more menu items and wine!
The food was delicious. The service was great. And a great atmosphere as well. I will be returning!
We had an amazing brunch and tasting. Our waitress was amazing and very helpful with all the wine questions we had. The hibiscus mimosa was excellent!!
Our waitress was very kind and knowledgeable. We went for brunch. The food wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was pretty good. I tried the Mermaid Winery Raspberry and Peach wines. The Peach (our waitresses recommendation) was definitely my favorite -- fruity and sweet! The Raspberry was good too, but a much lighter fruit taste. They even sell their wine glasses for $5!! Definitely will be coming back to try lunch or dinner!
We made reservations for 5:30 pm on a Wednesday evening thinking we could get an early meal and have the rest of the evening free. No such luck. We were seated on time but service was slow. We were not served dinner until almost 7:30pm. Our appetizers were also late in coming. My sandwich was barely lukewarm but I didn't dare send it back for fear that I wouldn't see it for another hour. The noise made conversation very difficult. Our server was very sweet but obviously harried and spread thin. This was my first experience with Mermaid Winery and none of our party of six cares to come back.
Hey there! Let me start by apologizing for the poor experience you had with us. We understand the importance of prompt service, especially when the guests' own planning is in play, and providing the best service possible within that window is one of our goals. It sounds like we failed to live up to that standard. We appreciate your candor in letting us know what happened; Your feedback tells us where we need to improve. We hope you will join us once more and give us another chance to impress!
Quiet romantic setting with phenomenal wine, food and service!
The Cabernet wine flight was really good. The District 7 was my favorite. The cheese board was excellent and the steak frites were very good (excellent chimichurri). The manager was very attentive and Laura was an excellent hostess.
Superbe cartedes vins et des plats simples mais faits maison. Service sympa et cadre dewinery...
Had a great brunch with friends!
after hearing great things about this place, we decided to celebrate my wife’s promotion with a friend there. Unfortunately our waitress was horrible from start to finish, let me start by saying the place was not packed at all because if it were packed I’d honestly understand why we were not being tended to in a timely matter. It should not take 20-25 minutes to get water. When I ordered 4 items for our charcuterie, it was dropped off and she never described what was what. She walked away from our table without explaining/describing anything. We ordered a bottle of wine and when she brought it to our table she immediately poured it, didn’t see the label, didn’t know if it had already been open. Because we went in on a Saturday to celebrate I kept my cool as not to ruin my wife’s day. Reach out to me if you care for a name and time.
We came to celebrate my mom’s birthday. The food and service was great. We will come back soon.
We enjoyed the Salmon bruschetta and spinach and artichoke dip to start. The Mermaid Winery 5 wine flight was beautifully displayed and was an enjoyable way to experience some of their custom wines. The steak tacos were delicious as well. Leah, our server, was helpful in describing the dishes and provided the perfect amount of attention when appropriate. We will definitely return.
Sunday brunch is a great choice! We booked for 11 and were the first ones there so it was nice and quiet and intimate. Great service, great food and great wines. We chose the French toast and a flight each. I chose the sweet wine flight, delicious! Don’t worry, it’s just enough to taste each wine, you won’t need to be carried out on a stretcher. Enjoy!!
Sunday at 1230, wine tasting but no lunch menu, only breakfast. We had some wine and went across the street for a real lunch.
Hey there! We appreciate your feedback! Here at Mermaid Winery we are constantly striving to improve, and your feedback is what allows us to identify areas where we need improvement. We serve brunch every Sunday from 11 AM to 2 PM, including our twists on brunch classics as well as a variety of Mimosas! Our lunch menu comprises gourmet dishes that come with one of a selection of glasses of wine! We invite you to join us once again so that we can impress with our gourmet selections!
Wonderful experience! Great wine, tasty food and attentive service. Will go back many, many more times.
THE MOST DELIGHTFUL, ROMANTIC, VIBRANT AND COMFORTABLE DATE I HAVE EVER BEEN ON. QUALITY EXPERIENCE ALL THE WAY AROUND!! WORDS CANT BEGIN TO EXPLAIN THE VIBES
I would appreciate more vegetarian menu options but they have a good selection of wine and Angela was friendly and knowledgeable.
The couch’s and lounging are gone which is disappointing, and the outside heaters were out of gas.
However, that being said it was a pleasant evening and I’d go back again!
No complaints about the food or table service. I’ve docked my review though because this is the second time in one week that I made a reservation here for two different birthdays and both times we had to wait for our table to be set up and nothing was ready for us. Between that and an empty dining room both times, it defeats the purpose of a reservation and makes for an awkward start to the evening.
Otherwise, once our parties were actually seated, our waiters both nights provided great service. The wine is always good here and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the salmon, which was done very nicely and it was quite tasty. I would order it again. Earlier in the week I had the Chicken Pasta which has all the ingredients for a great dish but the proportions just weren’t right - it felt like there was more chicken than pasta and the sauce was a bit too potent on spices (garlic maybe?). My friends had great reviews on the fish tacos and the steak as well!
Great selection of wines and food. Dining area a little noisy, but wasn’t too big a deal after a wine flight and we settled in.
One of the best date nights ever. Everything was amazing!!
