The food was great but the service was so terrible I don’t think I could ever go back.
2 stars, one for our sweet waitress and one for my hamburger! Place was empty at 7:00, 3 entrees not available on the menu, really warm inside (as in I don’t think they had the air on), bad vodka gimlet. Our waitress was sweet and attentive but the hamburger was the best thing in the place. Seems weird when it is a French restaurant. Can’t see them lasting.
We were looking forward to trying Merci but were not able to get service when we were seated. We left to go to another restaurant in the same area and had a lovely dinner.
We had reservations and after standing at the hostess stand for about 5 min, was finally seated. After being seated, we waited another 20 min, with no one acknowledging us or proving water. It was busy and we’re very forgiving guests in that if someone at least acknowledges our presence we’re willing to wait. We had even asked about who our server was and the person who said they’d check never returned. We left and I was going to comment on the way out, but no one was at the hostess stand.
After being seated on time, we waited 30 minutes for anyone to greet us at our table. We didn’t even get water. When we started noticing no one else being served either, we walked out. Would have loved to dine there. Menu looked promising.
We had reservations with a note that we were going to a show 2-1/4 hours later. We didn't have apps, but waited over an hour for our food. We ordered dessert, which our waitress came and told us would not be ready in time. Our food was great, the waitress accommodating, but the food service was lousy.
I made a reservation for an important business lunch meeting on July 31, 2019. My reservation was confirmed multiple times to which I replied I'd be arriving by 11:45 a.m. My guest and I arrived by 11:40 a.m. to find the restaurant closed. No notification, no phone call, just show up to closed doors. She was extremely disappointed and concluded I hadn't reserved a table. We went next door to Coopers Tavern and needless to say I WON"T return to Merci given the complete disregard for my important lunch meeting. What's the point in making a reservation, confirming multiple times, and now I'm completing feedback regarding my dining experience from Open Table. Given my restaurant experiences using Open Table when hosting for Madison restaurants, an employee or manager should have telephoned at least the day before to notify potential patrons the establishment has decided to close. This restaurant which has recently changed its menu to French cuisine has great potential. The chef is perfecting the menu and will soon have a wonderful 'new' restaurant on the Square. Having lived in France, I found that the menu brought back wonderful memories.

The location is lovely and we have had great drinks here before. The apple pie dessert with a slice of custard was memorable!
This time we ordered appetizers and salad. I especially loved the salad with egg, bacon and lemony greens. My husband enjoyed the friend onion soup.
Our server was quite helpful and understanding when we realized we weren't hungry enough for a charcuterie board. We still had an amazing dessert - this time the flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce.
Four of us dined at Merci on a Tuesday night at 6:15pm. Three items from the sparse menu were not available. One of us selected the Sable fish item; the wait staff returned to inform us it would be Walleye instead.
The service was incredibly slow. It took almost 2 hours to eat, once we ordered. There was only one other table occupied aside from ours and a few people having drinks at the bar. Two entrees came out. Then another minutes later. And more time passed while waiting for the last entree, which was the "Sable"(Walleye).
The space is nice. I can't determine noise level because there was almost no one there. For good reason.
The burger was great - tasty, nicely presented. The pasta was bland. To be fair, most restaurants in the midwest miss the mark on the vegetarian option - however, one might expect more in progressive Madison.
The chicken was over cooked and the mussels were bland. The frites were not well flavored or well cooked.
Went to Merci for the first time on June 1st, it was amazing so my husband and I wanted to go back again. We on June 15th and it was a big disappointment. I would have given the food a 5 star back on the 1st but I wouldn't even give it a star when we were there on the 15th. For how much money we spent it was a waste and our leftovers went in the trash when we got home. Sad to say I am not sure if we will go back to give it another chance.
I absolutely love French food; when Merci opened, I knew I had to try it out.
Unfortunately, despite being closed for some time to open, not much was re-done on the interior from Field Table (the owners also run Merci). The bathrooms were clearly unpainted with the sink falling off the wall. The interior decor and ambiance is quite lovely, though.
In regards to food: Bread should automatically be put on each table. Instead, Merci charges $6 for sliced baguette and butter. Our cheese plate was supposed to have 4 cheeses, but only showed up with 3 (our server did rectify this, but at that point we were out of the few toasts that came with the cheese board).
My pheasant soup was terribly bland, unfortunately. No salt or pepper on any table, either. Someone else in our party ordered a pasta entrée, which was equally unsatisfying.
We were overall underwhelmed with the experience at Merci. French restaurants come 'pre-packaged,' so to speak, with good food and ambiance. The food caters itself to rich flavors. I wish I could say that I would return, but with the food as dull as it was and at elevated prices, I can't say that I will.
Food and service was good; we had an enjoyable evening.

We were really excited to try this restaurant but the service was slow and impersonal even though the restaurant was mostly empty. Some of the food was good and some was not. Given the number of great restaurants in Madison we likely won’t be back.
Food was poorly executed. Under salted and bland. The steak was served in a bowl and was difficult to cut. The potatoes were under cooked and raw in the center. The fish entree was served in a bed of dehydrated and flavorless lentils. The entire experience was sad and depressing. Redemption was the service!
I was excited to try their special Mother's Day menu (since it appears they are not normally open on Sunday). A nice variety of upscale options--not just the "usual" brunch options. I ordered steak and eggs (filet, egg, roasted potatoes, lightly dressed greens). The steak was as good (if not better) than any I've had in Madison (and that includes the specialty steak houses we have). Nicely seasoned and browned to a perfect medium rare. I have to say we waited a long time for the food--good thing we weren't in a hurry. I had to be persistent to get a refill of coffee (my cup sat empty for at least 20 minutes). That said, the bar staff was exceptional and kept tabs on us, too. I love the new atmosphere and menu. Looking forward to trying Merci for dinner.
We had a party of 5 for Mothers Day brunch. Everyone was thoroughly pleased with the food and the overall experience. Highly recommended. A computer glitch apparently told Open Table that we were no-shows but it was quickly corrected.
The drinks were good, so were the mussels. The disappointment was that the salads weren’t very good. Overall didn’t think the quality was worth the price. Would try again since we were there the first week it opened!
Was a bit cold in the restaurant as the doors were open and it was not that warm outside! Sat at the bar--bartender was nice to talk to. French onion soup was tasty, though a bit sweet for our tastes. The beef bourguignon and salmon were very good. Will be back.
Computer was down; service was snarky, and the wine overpriced.
Loved their food and drink menus since there were options for everyone. Reasonably priced and wonderful service. Marika was a great server and very attentive and knowledgeable.
