Merchants River House Ratings and Reviews
Took my teenage daughter and her friends for lunch for her birthday. Made a reservation the night before and my table was ready on time! The Mac & Cheese Quartet was absolutely amazing - the girls, especially my daughter, LOVED it! Sweet potato fries are the best we've ever had. (one drawback is that they charged for every refill of flavored lemonade even though menu says free refills)
We had Thanksgiving dinner at Merchant's Riverhouse...food was good, but sat waiting to be
picked up and served ( we sat across from service area)...would have liked my meal a bit hotter. I realize it was a holiday and busier than usual. Views were beautiful, very relaxed atmosphere and workers very friendly. We have been to brunches during warmer months and have been very happy with our experiences. Overall, we really like this restaurant and will return in the future.
Great place for a late lunch with an excellent view of the Harbor and NJ. Sat at a high top in the bar area and loved it. Good food (lobster rolls with sweet potato fries were very good) , good drinks (Bloody Mary and also Hustle and Bustle highly recommend), and super friendly staff.
Each time I visit this restaurant I asked myself why I'm not there a lot more often. Really, truly a neighborhood gem. Way better than the much noisier places just blocks away by the marina, this is just around the corner, and worth the extra two block walk. (In fact, would be worth an extra mile walk)
Starting with wonderful river & harbor views and spectacular sunset (if you're there at the right time), it only gets better. The waiters are always extremely helpful. Their food is really top notch. My favorite appetizers are the Spinach & Artichoke Dip (with amazing chips for dipping) and the Giant Pretzel (words don't do it justice). For a main course, I almost always order the Ahi Tuna, and then salivate at the dishes of my companions. And don't skip the Cookie ala mode for desert.
(P.S. The reason I'm not there more often is that I don't eat out near my office very often.)
This was second visit. First one sept 23 for 8 people at lunch. Every thing was great! Service indoors and everything great! Second visit this past sun oct 23. Crowded did not have our outdoor. Table for 6 which was reserved. Service terrible! Slow! Waiter forgot a lunch order! Waited and waited! It was embarrassing as I had raved about the place to friends . Will not go back! Sorry to sAy this
I received several contacts/confirmations/emails from the restaurant about the time of our reservation. Upon arrival the hostess had a different time for our reservation. I showed her the email/confirmation # rom my phone and she just gave me a blank look and insisted I was incorrect.
The food was not up to par. The drinks were very light. Best part of the meal was an extra large pretzel we ordered to have with our drinks.
There were 6 in our party and the consensus was unanimous....great view but never again.
My daughter works in the financial district and I took her and her two friends for dinner at Merchants River House. We sat outside on the patio watching the sunset over the Hudson River. The views are spectacular. Our server was friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed sharing the Quartet of Mac-n-cheese Cones. They were very good and flavorful. Chicken dumplings, Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna and Grilled Tuna Wrap were all very nice dishes. In addition, our bar drinks were served promptly.
Loud. They gave us hesitation about reservations but nobody was there except the super loud birthday party... Which they sat us right next to. The wine was cheap, the service curt and the food.... The food was so bad we didn't even finish it. Over priced restaurant charging for the view which you really even couldn't see because the windows were so dirty.
Glad we've been here before, and like it. When we arrived for this visit, we did not feel welcome at all. Staff at the podium were busy talking amongst themselves, and had not noticed we were there. When I interrupted, all turned "nice" and we were seated. Server was a bit delayed, but overall he provided excellent subsequent service. The food remains at outstanding and creative as usual. Drinks were perfect. Overall, a nice evening after a rough start.
Our waitress was absolutely horrific. She took 15 minutes breaks between each time she came to the table, including the time we waited to show her that she got 2 orders very wrong. We realized it had been 25 minutes since we had asked for our check and that it still had not been delivered. Someone at our table had to get up and search for our server for 5 minutes, and only then did we realize that she had put 5 items on our bill that we did not order or eat. This took another 10 minutes to resolve, and the overall check process alone took 45 minutes, which made us late for 8 pm broadway tickets (our reservation was at 5:30). Early in the meal, our wine got delivered to the table quickly by another server, but our waitress didn't come to the table for 10 minutes to open them- all the while complaining about how busy she was when we were the only table on the patio so far. The restaurant was nice with great food and views, but our stress and annoyance levels continued to rise as we sat there due to the absolutely dreadful waitress.
Good location and amazing views for the Hudson River and Jersey City. Sunsets are fantastic and this is a really great river spot to eat and have a few drinks. The food is great and the service friendly. Although last time they were not so hot at getting us seated and we had a booking. Do love going there all the same
Was down at ground zero on 9/11 looking for a place to eat. Merchants seemed right. Made a quick reservation with the Open Table app and headed over.
Asked to sit outside as the night was nice, and inside was a little noisy. Wait staff was a bit sparse and slow on the upkeep. Ordered a few beverages - waiter came back with mine but said my dates was not available. He wanders off helps another table and we were patient to flag him down with a substitute beverage.
Placed order - a few appetizers (dumplings and lamb meatballs) and a few entrees (stripped bass and ahi tuna).
Dumplings come out. Start eating and conversing...
A little while later BOTH entrees come out.
I inquire "what happened to appetizer 2?" - oh - the waiter forgot.
"Skip it then"
Start eating and noticed my Stripped Bass dish magically turned into Salmon! Looking at the prices - they were all the same and I didn't want to make a scene.
I should have reflected the lack of service with a lack of tip. Hopefully management will read this and do the needful.
The restaurant was very good however the site recommended a specific parking garage that the restaurant would validate the parking ticket. When we asked about this, we were told the restaurant no longer provided validation. The parking garage charged an exorbitant fee, much more than we paid at an other garages in the area. This was very disappointing as we would have used a different garage. I would recommend that the information provided through open table be updated to remove the statement about parking validation and the garage recommended made for an extremely expensive dinner.
It was a special brunch for family and friends - 8 of us were there from age 18 to 79 and we were able talk and enjoy each other's company. Even on a rainy day the view was lovely, then the sun came out and we walked along the river. We each ordered just what we wanted and it was delicious. Only downside - the espresso machine was down for repair!
