Merchants is located in a historic building on the corner of 4th and Broadway in downtown Nashville that dates back to 1892. The building has been a myriad things, including a pharmacy, a wholesale drug company, and even a hotel. In 1988 it became Merchants restaurant. In 2010, the Goldberg brothers purchased the three-floor restaurant and gave it new life. The first floor bistro, with its black and white theme, features a lively atmosphere and casual cuisine. The second floor offers finer fare and a more intimate feel. The third floor is reserved for special events.
1st Floor Bistro
Multiple dates availableThe street-level entrance of Merchants leads to a vibrant black and white bistro, often filled with a cross-section of local business men and women, tourists and those attending events in the downtown area. The bistro boasts quality cocktails, comfortable food, and impeccable service.
2nd Floor Steakhouse
Multiple dates availableThe second floor of Merchants is open for dinner has a totally different vibe than the bistro. A little fancier and more upscale, it has a separate menu from the bistro. The dining room on the second floor offers more refined dishes, a more expansive wine list, and several top-tier steak options.
grilled flat iron, watercress, mint, english cucumbers, radish, fresno chile lime vinaigrette
Duck Fat Tater Tots
spicy ranch, creole honey mustard, smoked ketchup
Over all it was good. We had the glazed Brussels Sprouts as a side and they were undercook. Rest of the meal was good
Late dinner after arriving in Nashville. We had reservations, not sure they were necessary. The grilled chicken sandwich was delicious.
Great service and accommodation of allergies in our party. Food was awesome. Thanks!
Great dinner with friends from out of state. Our downtown on Broadway go to restaurant. Can’t beat the Hot Pimento cheese spread with Duck Fat fried tator tots for dipping. Yum.
One of our favorite restaurants!!! Dinner salads were delicious! It was our first time to eat downstairs- very enjoyable. We look forward to our dinner in December in the upstairs area. Great food & ambiance!!
We were really looking forward to a great steak dinner. I ordered the prime rib. It was about a 1/4 inch thick if that and all fat and grizzle. I was more shocked that they served it. The wedge salad, man and cheese and tater tots were great. Our server was excellent! He really made a not impressive dinner a better experience.
Went for our anniversary dinner from out of state. No congratulations. Poor service. Waited 20 minutes for our waiter while others were served that came after! Drinks were excellent! Salad yummy! Salmon very over cooked even scorched.
We made reservations and we showed up a little early we were seated immediately. Good and drinks were great and served in a very timely manner. Only complaint was the AC just wasn’t on we sweated the whole entire time.
Good food, good service, fun for people watching
Our waiter Mark was awesome! He was friendly and engaging, and as a customer service manager, I always notice that.
This place did not disappoint. The second floor is so different from the street outside.
Service was Great and food was some the best I have had. I will be coming back.
This was an awesome place. The building and atmosphere was great. Food was great. I had the club and my husband had the hamburger.
We were so fortunate to find this lovely restaurant in the midst of the Broadway crowd and noise. Both the food and service were excellent. Highly recommend!
Worst prime rib i've ever had. Very tough. All other food was good. Service was excellent.
Great food and the service was great! They were able to get us right in .
Arrived early for reservations upstairs but we had originally wanted to sit downstairs. Was able to sit downstairs and eat quickly before a concert. From the popcorn start to the deviled egg appetizer and grilled Salmon dish everything tasted amazing. Had a few lemon drop martinis and bourbons and was on our way to the concert earlier than anticipated. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Good experience.
Our waiter was very busy so we waited on salad dressing & water way too long. I paid a chunk to get only 3 shrimp added to my salad that weren’t good.
We are downstairs in the “bistro”- very fun atmosphere. Great food and service.
Restored hotel dining area in black and white tile. Nice bar seating, good light. A lot of energetic street noise outside (it's lower Broadway with tourists, street musicians) that can be heard but the energy of the place is nice and you can still hear your companions talk. Food was good -- companions enjoyed chicken fried chicken, roast beef dip sandwiches which were substantial (but not divine) -- hefty sweet potato fries done well. Jambalaya was on the spicy side and tomato sauce more like marina in consistency than a broth. Generous wine pour and really good margaritas. In the past I've had the arugula salad with salmon which was delicious. Wait staff were wonderful (also neatly dressed in black and white). A fun place to grab a drink or bite where you can experience Lower Broadway comfortably without raucous music levels or overcrowded sidewalks.
Excellent food and drinks and super friendly staff!
Mark was great!!!!
We had a great experience at Merchants. The service was really outstanding and the food was even better.
Excellent venue in the heart of downtown Nashville. Food was great, service stellar and the view out the window very entertaining. Would go again.
Always good food! Wait staff were friendly and table was ready at our reserved time.
Amazing prime rib. Excellent service in the bistro. I will definitely be back.
Great food, service, location, and atmosphere! Try the peach cobbler for dessert!
Great waiter and recommended good food. Had popcorn instead of bread which was so much fun and very tasty! Salmon was phenomenal with the strawberry salad but their pulled pork sandwich was extremely dry and their fried green tomatoes were tasteless.
Atmosphere & Food excellent. Our waiter seemed bored and tired when we were placing order. Admonished is when asked for coffee after dinner and didn’t state that we wanted cream & sugar. Acknowledge help situation challenge these days so would definitely still recommend
A locally-based client suggested Merchants. I was so pleased with my initial visit that I scheduled several more meetings there over the course of forty-eight hours. Consistently impressive and satisfying.
Honestly - the food was awful, the drinks were awful. Don't waste your time.
Prompt and attentive service which is amazing considering almost every restaurant and retail business is short staffed.
If you like “different food” this is your place. The max and cheese was great! The club sandwich was fantastic
Excellent service and food.
an old Nashville favorite. Was great to be back. I was a customer 30 years ago when they opened and still a customer today. Drinks were good, food was good, didn't feel rushed. what more could I ask for?
Our server was amazing! A great experience. She was friendly and not overbearing.
Merchants is a tradition for our visits to Nashville. The fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese can't be beat.
We had reservations for a 50th birthday celebration and were promptly seated upon arrival. Food was delicious and service was great.
Birthday dinner great food
We made a reservation and as soon as we walked up, we were seated on the first floor as requested. This was during the 4th of July weekend in Nashville. Our waiter was phenomenal. He was born and raised in Nashville. He was very attentive and did a great job. He was extremely busy, but made sure that we were taken care of. My wife and I both ordered the same mixed drink. Mine had way too much ice, but hers was just right. Maybe a cube too many for me. We ordered the tater tots as an appetizer. Out of this world!! One caveat, I love tater tots! I ordered a double cheeseburger with house chips and my wife the strawberry salad. The hamburger was good. It was a slightly overcooked, but it was still good. My wife's salad was very good. Fresh vegetables and the cheese was excellent.
I still give them a 5 star rating. It was a crazy weekend! The service and tater tots made up for the slightly overcooked hamburger.
