Merchants is located in a historic building on the corner of 4th and Broadway in downtown Nashville that dates back to 1892. The building has been a myriad things, including a pharmacy, a wholesale drug company, and even a hotel. In 1988 it became Merchants restaurant. In 2010, the Goldberg brothers purchased the three-floor restaurant and gave it new life. The first floor bistro, with its black and white theme, features a lively atmosphere and casual cuisine. The second floor offers finer fare and a more intimate feel. The third floor is reserved for special events.
1st Floor Bistro
Multiple dates availableThe street-level entrance of Merchants leads to a vibrant black and white bistro, often filled with a cross-section of local business men and women, tourists and those attending events in the downtown area. The bistro boasts quality cocktails, comfortable food, and impeccable service.
2nd Floor Steakhouse
Multiple dates availableThe second floor of Merchants is open for dinner has a totally different vibe than the bistro. A little fancier and more upscale, it has a separate menu from the bistro. The dining room on the second floor offers more refined dishes, a more expansive wine list, and several top-tier steak options.
grilled flat iron, watercress, mint, english cucumbers, radish, fresno chile lime vinaigrette
Duck Fat Tater Tots
spicy ranch, creole honey mustard, smoked ketchup
Food was fantastic as always. Service was impeccable, our server was Gary and he wasted no time in meeting our needs and requests. Extremely professional.
After a long week of trade show work plus the night life it was wonderful to sit down to a nice quiet meal to wrap up the week.
We will return the next time we visit!
Both the service and food were great. We enjoyed the deviled egg and bacon appetizers were excellent.
Overall food was decent. Scene was cool. Unfortunately our server forgot about our appetizers and our dinner came out before them so they were comp’d. Chicken fried chicken was great and the tomato bisque. Fried green tomatoes had minimum flavor.
Excellent food. I love the deviled eggs and onion rings. I had flat iron steak and it was so good. Service was great in the beginning but then slacked off a little bit. Still highly recommend
Waiter was a bit slow and forgetful
Not what we were hoping for considering the reviews
Service was quick and the attendants were very attentive. Ryan was excellent. Food was good but not the best I've ever had. Somewhat loud.
Usually I would expect a restaurant on Broadway to be touristy and low quality food, but Merchants surprises us time and time again with great food in a nice atmosphere. The second story dining experience is highly recommended to get away from the hustle and bustle of the downstairs area!
Great evening with fantastic service!
We dined at the steakhouse on the second floor of Merchants. My husband said his fillet was cooked perfectly. The shrimp cocktail was delicious. I should’ve asked more questions about food preparation because the onion rings were very heavily breaded and the brussels sprouts had very liberal amounts of bacon; neither of these aspects worked for me. The peach cobbler for dessert was delicious. The service was punctual, friendly, and non-intrusive.
Wonderful- Mike and Mark were great!!
A nice little escape right off of Broadway. We loved the food and drinks. Their attention to detail was awesome. Great service. We will be back.
We had a wonderful server he made excellent recommendations.
Everything we ate and drank was absolutely delicious! Our server was fantastic (I wish I remembered his name). Order the 50/50 potato’s, you will not regret it!
Really enjoyed dining on the 2nd floor. More intimate setting. Delicious food and excellent service.
Unfortunately we went because they were one of few restaurants that had prime rib and they were sold out. Service was okay. Food was mediocre for the price.
We are from out of state and first time to Broadway and didn't know what we were getting into, so here's the Pros and Cons from our viewpoint - and you may consider some vice versa too. PROS: One of the few (the only?) restaurant on Broadway that didn't have a live band play (and at a zillion decibels). But just the noise in restaurant (Bistro first floor) was more bar like than dining like. They also had the best friggin' complimentary (or for a price) popcorn I've ever had. Season with a bunch of stuff that I can't recall, but I could have eaten that all night. And menu items were priced pretty reasonable for a "tourist trap" area (waitress immediately asked where we were all from, not that we looked weird but no locals eat there I would assume). The Fish Tacos were excellent and the only plate fully finished. Also, the chips that came with the pimento cheese app were superb. Cons: steaks and prime rib were from less than choice beef. Tough and sinewy. Could be Merchants is trying to hold prices on beef items and went down a cut rather than raising prices of making all steaks "market price." None of the meat eaters finished their plates. And this was first time I had pimento cheese. I don't get the attraction. But then again, I like White Castle slides and roasted bone marrow if I can get it. I would hazard a guess though that 90% of the tourists on the street would rave about this place, so if you're a Broadway frequent visitor, check them out.
Great Food and service!
The atmosphere on the second floor was amazing. You'd never know you were on Broadway surrounding by loud bars. Our waitress was sweet and very knowledgeable especially with our food allergies. Food was fabulous! I would definitely recommend Merchants!
Service was great!
Ate there twice in 2 days. Excellent food and service. A nice departure from the bar scene on Broadway.
Our Server was excellent but the wait for our food was way too long and others who were seated after us got their food before us.
It was close to nightlife & the food was incredible!! We had filet mignon, Mac & cheese, & Brussels.
Great atmosphere and glad they take reservations on a concert night. So convenient and delicious
We got up and left after not being created by a server for 30 minutes.
Merchants a great restaurant on Broadway in middle of all of the holy took bars with live music. In town for the Blake Shelton concert we chose to dine on the 1st floor - Bistro for a quicker time commitment. A couple drinks at the bar with Fred (excellent Old Fashion) and then to our table by the window. Perfect. Matt was our waiter; he was efficient although not terrible friendly. We shared a nice Caesar salad. Pam had the Sammy and Soup combo while I enjoyed the Chicken Fried Steak. Great all around experience. Pam & Dave
Wonderful place for an early pre-concert casual dinner. The service was great, friendly and efficient. We were seated promptly and served at an appropriate pace, not rushed. All of the four entrees were terrific and the deviled eggs were as good as mine! Spicy pickle a nice addition. We have also eaten upstairs, also a terrific pick in downtown Nashville when you have more time to enjoy the fine dining experience.
The food was average. Service was good. Price was good.
The place is really pretty, and a nice setting. The food and presentation was mediocre, which surprised me based on the looks of it.
From food to service, everything was spectacular
Food was very good, service good. Visiting Nashville from Philadelphia. Would recommend.
My fiancé and I are brand new to Nashville & found Merchants through open table - and so glad we did!!! We wanted a celebratory date night & Merchant’s 2nd floor steakhouse was the perfect place. Our waiter (Richard) was an absolute delight and had excellent menu recommendations. The ambiance is lovely, the space ia beautiful and the food was amazing - the 50/50 potatoes are to die for. We will def be back!
The food portions were plentiful and the food was excellent, particularly the fried green tomatoes and peach cobbler. Still, coming off the bustle of the streets, it’s still quite noisy-there should be some music or sound that fits the bistro feel inside. If noise is an issue I’d recommend the upstairs dining area. A very good alternative to the honky tonks on the street.
We had a great time and excellent food. Our server was amazing and he takes pride in working there for so long. All of his food suggestions were fantastic.
Baked potato was dry
Stark was ok . Ordered medium well was still bloody
Waitress was good .
Spent 200 bucks.
Great food and service. Really enjoyed it.
Beautiful building. Enjoyable casual dinner with some inventive touches. It was a nice oasis from the boisterous party buses touring Broadway.
The food was excellent and the service was fantastic. I wonderful meal and great place to have a date night on the second floor. Will come back.
The best restaurant in Nashville! Everyone is so incredibly nice! They always make our visit super special! Back in May, they made my best friend a birthday card and an ice cream sundae and this time we visited for another friend’s bachelorette and they also made her a card and gave us complimentary champagne!!! I can’t wait until my next visit! ❤️
Delicious food, wonderful service and nice ambience.
