About Mercer Kitchen

Located at the Mercer Hotel, Mercer Kitchen brings a chic, sophisticated vibe to the heart of SoHo. When Mercer Kitchen opened in 1998, it immediately became a destination for New Yorkers, celebrities, and tourists. Situated in the basement of a historic building constructed in the 1800s, the… restaurant was designed by Christian Liaigre as a combination of industrial and classic modernism. Chef Jean-Georges’ American menu features market-driven, seasonal ingredients prepared in a simple yet elegant style, with favorites like the Tuna Spring Roll, Steamed Shrimp Salad, wood-fired pizzas, and classic Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake. There is an open kitchen, where guests can sit back and watch the show.

Honestly- I was really excited bc I had heard that this place was amazing, but our food came out completely cold, we had to ask for things several times, and it just wasn't at all the experience I was expecting for such a nice place. I wasn't leaving like OMG I HATE THIS PLACE but I definitely wouldn't go back.

Delicious food. Lively/noisy. Touristy but a fun scene. Best pork chop I have ever eaten. Baked chicken the ultimate comfort food. Vegetables well-prepared. Service is very good and friendly.

Great service, great food! Hostess was not very nice and tried to squeeze three of us into a table that was meant for two. She acquiesced and allowed us to move after a bit.

It saddens me to write this review, for many reasons. Mercer Kitchen has always been.a wonderful go-to place for my wife and me when we lived in Soho. After moving to Brooklyn a year ago, we continued to stop in for drinks and an occasional brunch with friends and out-of-town family members. When we got hitched in City Hall on Valentine’s Day this year, this is where we came for lunch with our lovely witnesses.

Here’s where the story gets sad...

Last week, I made a reservation for 3 to have dinner with a close friend and my wife. When asked if this was a special occasion, I mentioned that we were celebrating my wife’s birthday. We met our friend at the lobby of the hotel, which I eventually was told was for hotel guests only, but the host was happy to set us up at a table for three in that lobby. I made sure to let the downstairs hostess know that we were not dinning in the main dining room but wanted her to clear it with management that we were being seated in the lobby. 2 mins later, (and two cocktails at the lobby lounge) another host came to our lounge area to inform us that we had to move to the main dining room. Although I appreciate the policy, I also must mention that this was a Monday and the lobby was not full. In fact, on our way out after dinner, the table we were promised wasn’t even used. Again, we did not ask... we were offered the upstairs table. Lastly, there was special attention given to our table or my wife for her birthday (keep in mind, I didn’t voluntarily offer this info, I was asked when I made the reservation and when we arrived. ) Since nothing special happened, I’m not sure why I was asked.

I usually don’t write lengthily reviews... (as you can tell... I’m bad at it) it’s just that this experience left us a bit deflated... We spent most of the time after being seated in the main dining area looking to book another reservation before our server arrived (she was great, by the way... so not a total bummer)

Cheers.

Service was terrible. After ordering coffee at brunch It took over :15 to get it. That was after asking for it nicely 3x and then making a fuss. Refills were equally slow. Food was pretty good although one of the orders was messed up. This is our second visit. The first time the service was slow but not nearly as bad as this time. Will not return.

Our experience for a family dinner was not as good as on previous occasions. The wait staff, while friendly, was indifferent and seemed somewhat disorganized. One of our party ordered a salad as a main course and asked it to be delivered with the other entrées. However it came with the appetizers. While the food was generally good some items were only lukewarm including the otherwise delicious french fries. Overall this meal was not up to the standard of our previous visits, and given the steep prices, we found it disappointing.

Seating for a group of 8 was perfect. Many good food options to choose from but the execution is a bit lacking. A hamburger came out way underdone and the bread for the lamb sandwich and avocado toast were a bit too flimsy. Service, however, was very attentive and good.

Waited for 40 minutes despite having a reservation. Pressured by waiter to order extra food that we did not need. Very loud, difficult to have a conversation. Chairs did not have backs. And did not get 100 points for checking in despite having an open table reservation. I would not go back.

Service was poor: it was was SO hard to flag down our waiter. I had asked a girl to help us organize the dessert with a candle for my friends birthday and she said yes no problem. Moments later our waiter comes to me and says that HE is our waiter and asked if he could help me. I told him what I told the girl and he rudely said to me that she's the hostess, not a waitress. He had corrected me, BIG difference...he was very rude. So I had expected throughout the meal to see him serve us. Instead there were 3 other people who came to serve us and he was in no sight. He did not introduce himself to the table or come by to ask if everything was alright. I had no recognition of the service here.

Food: very mediocre. I had a lamb sandwich and the meat was good but the bread was just cheap white bread that I can find at a 99c store. It was like a sandwich I can get at a halal truck. It was also soggy and cold by the time I got my food and not toasted enough. I saw what my friends were eating and it was very disappointing as well. The omelette was u underwhelming. It was almost as if you are punished for ordering an omelette at such a 'nice' restaurant. My friend had the mushroom fusilli and she said that it was bland. We had to ask for salt and pepper (there was no salt pepper on the table!). I expected more but the level of quality and service was terrible compared to what we paid and Jean-Georges!!!! What a disappointment.

Ambience: very nice decor and detail however foot traffic was not organized. People were waiting left and right for a table and also standing right in front of people dining.

Service was TERRIBLE. Took 45 minutes after being seated for the waiter to come over, but then after ordering our appetizers were all rushed over at once (before we had finished our first one) and then entrees we’re brought our before we finished our appetizers.

Scallops were cold and undercooked. Had to be sent back.

I reminded the hostess that this was for my fiances birthday and I’d like them to do something special for dessert. I ordered dessert and it was brought out with no candle or anything. Completely forgot about my request.

After dessert I asked for the check and it took them 3 separate reminders over a 30 minute period to bring it out.

Rude hostesses. When someone approaches the desk, it's only human to look up from the computer and say "hello I just need one second." And not ignore customers who are there to give you their money. Also when a third of the tables are empty and there was a lot of availability on Open Table, perhaps explain kindly why you're making a group wait one hour to be sat. There are way too many amazing places to eat in New York to put up with this nonsense. Bartender and waiters were lovely though.

I have to say that I very surprised at my experience with Mercer Kitchen yesterday for brunch, but in retrospect I should have guessed they would not be what they should have been given that they had so many free time slots for Brunch when I booked on Sat night. The place is impressive. Large room, very trendy, elegant and aesthetically quite pleasing and given the long history and popularity my friends and I were all excited. Service was at best mediocre. Staff was unattentive, uninterested and it almost seemed like we were a burden just being there; at one point I raised my hand as a waiter walked by who looked right at me and continued walking by. We ordered 3 appetizers for the table that they seemed to not know how to put on the table (we were 6, big table) so decided the meats and cheese plate that comes with sides of nuts/cornichons/spice should be placed sort of in front of me but the side plate right in front of me (yes, it's a detail, but this is supposed to be a nice restaurant). We said sharing, no individual plates were given, we used the bread plates which no one seemed to notice or care about. It took a good 20 min to get out drinks. Bloodymary: awful, probably the worst I have had in 10 years in NYC. It was like the cocktail sauce you get with shrimp and I seemed like a crazy person to the waiter when I asked for olives...I sent it back, again no one noticed. To the food: very small portions. Eggs benedict were tiny, sauce was thick and you could tel was sitting under a lamp for a while, the 8 mini potatoes on the side are suggestive of "we are too cheap to give you a normal portion". No one checked in with us when the food came nor did anyone say bye and thank you as we were leaving. This is by far one of the worst experiences I have in a long time and if this is what Mercer Kitchen is these days then no thank you. A diner would have been a better choice.

It's was a confident choice as we knew it the food would be good. Everyone was very pleased with entree choices (char on my steak was incredibly tasty). They accommodated our reservation change which is why we looked passed the table they gave us directly seated under the staircase. Our server was attentive.
